Abstract

This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and a post-test control group. A total of fifty public health students (n = 25 in the experimental group and n = 25 in the control group) participated in the study. The experimental group (n = 25) received ESP-based training, while the control group (n = 25) received training in General English. The measures of data collection included an English proficiency test, a job readiness test, and a health promotion knowledge test. At a significance level of p = 0.05, statistical analyses using paired samples t-tests and independent t-tests were conducted. The results showed a significant improvement in scores of the experimental group in English proficiency (M = 61.8 to 81.2; p < 0.001), work preparedness (M = 55.9 to 79.4; p < 0.001), and health promotion knowledge (M = 59.3 to 82.7; p < 0.001). No significant improvement was detected in the control group (p > 0.05). The findings indicate that the ESP approach was superior to the traditional General English approach in ensuring the improvement in the linguistic proficiency and vocational readiness of students. The ESP method significantly improved the level of English proficiency, employment readiness, and health promotion knowledge among the students in the field of public health. Incorporating ESP into public health courses can enhance graduates' employability and professional proficiency, equipping them to address challenges in global health communication and promotion.

Abstract

Mental health is an integral component of overall health that affects individuals’ social, emotional, and productive functioning. However, mental health literacy in the community remains relatively low, as indicated by limited understanding of mental health concepts, early signs of psychological problems, strategies for maintaining mental well-being, and the importance of seeking appropriate help. This condition may reinforce stigma and hinder promotive and preventive efforts in the community. This community service program aimed to improve mental health literacy through community-based psychological education. The program was implemented using an educational and participatory approach consisting of four stages: preparation, implementation, evaluation, and follow-up. The activities included health education sessions, interactive discussions, simple simulations, and community assistance. The evaluation was conducted using pre-tests and post-tests, observation of participants’ involvement, and participant feedback. The expected outcomes included improved public knowledge of mental health, increased ability to identify early signs of psychological problems, reduced stigma, and greater awareness of maintaining mental well-being and accessing appropriate support services. The indicators of success were reflected in the implementation of activities as planned, active participant engagement, and improved participants’ understanding after attending the program.

Abstract

Public understanding of safe childbirth through the implementation of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) utilizing international-standard English educational videos in Kutalimbaru District, Deli Serdang Regency is motivated by the persistence of community perceptions and childbirth practices that do not yet fully align with health standards. The implementation methods included a preparation phase, identification of community needs, material delivery, educational video screenings, interactive discussions, mentoring, and evaluations via pre-tests and post-tests. The ESP approach was employed to introduce basic English terminology relevant to maternal health and childbirth contexts. The results of the activity indicate that the program was well-executed and received positive responses from the community. Participant attendance reached 85%, active participation was 78%, and the average score of participants increased from 56% in the pre-test to 84% in the post-test. Furthermore, 76% of participants were able to identify basic procedures for safe childbirth, and 82% stated that the educational videos improved their understanding of the material. This activity proves that the implementation of ESP through educational videos is effective in enhancing public health literacy regarding safe childbirth.

Abstract

English proficiency is an essential skill for public health students to meet global demands, particularly in health promotion, which requires cross-cultural communication and understanding of international literature. English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is considered a relevant learning method because it aligns instructional materials with students’ academic and professional needs. Through this approach, students can improve their English competence specific to the health field, thereby enhancing job readiness and health promotion competence. This study employed a quantitative survey approach to analyze the effect of ESP on public health students’ job readiness and knowledge in health promotion. The sample consisted of 50 students selected using a purposive sampling technique who had previously taken ESP courses. The independent variable was the ESP method, measured through indicators such as material relevance, technical health vocabulary, reading skills, report writing, and presentation abilities. The dependent variable was job readiness, indicated by communication ability, mastery of health promotion, and access to international literature. Data were analyzed using simple linear regression and Pearson correlation with SPSS version 28. The results showed a Pearson correlation coefficient of r = 0.732 with a p-value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating a strong and significant positive relationship between ESP and students’ job readiness. The regression equation Y = 1.12 + 0.76X with an R² value of 0.536 indicates that the ESP method contributes 53.6% to improving job readiness and health promotion knowledge, while 46.4% is influenced by other factors. Thus, better ESP implementation significantly enhances students’ preparedness for careers in public health.

Abstract

Stunting remains a significant public health challenge in Deli Serdang Regency, often exacerbated by low health literacy and linguistic barriers in understanding global nutritional information. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) program in improving nutritional understanding among families with stunted children in Percut Sei Tuan District. The ESP program was specifically designed to equip parents with the ability to understand functional nutritional terminology, food labels, and basic health instructions. This study employed a Pre-Experimental (One-Group Pretest-Posttest) design conducted with 22 respondents selected through purposive sampling. The intervention was carried out over five days, from January 19 to 23, 2026. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using the paired sample t-test. The results indicated a statistically significant increase in the respondents nutritional understanding. The mean score rose from 54.1 at pre-test to 83.0 at post-test (p < 0.05). These findings prove that mastering technical nutritional terms through an ESP approach enhances parents self-efficacy in interpreting nutritional information and selecting healthy food. In conclusion, integrating functional language literacy into health interventions is an effective and innovative strategy to accelerate the reduction of stunting rates at the household level.
