Abstract

This study analyzes students' difficulties in solving set story problems, taking into account students' learning styles. The research approach used a qualitative approach. Data were obtained through questionnaires, written tests and interviews. The results showed that students with visual, auditorial, and kinesthetic learning styles experienced difficulties in solving set story problems. Students with visual learning styles experience two indicators of difficulty, namely difficulty learning concepts and difficulty applying principles. For difficulties in learning concepts, students cannot use formulas that are in accordance with the conditions of the problem, namely the formula for the combination and difference of three sets. As for the difficulty of applying principles, students make mistakes in calculation activities and do not solve the problem. Students with auditorial learning styles experience all indicators of difficulty, namely difficulty learning concepts, difficulty applying principles and difficulty solving verbal problems. In the difficulty of applying concepts, students cannot translate the form of the problem, do not know what is known from the problem, students also do not use formulas that are in accordance with the conditions of the problem. In difficulty applying principles, students make mistakes in calculation activities when solving problems. In the difficulty of solving verbal problems, students make mistakes in translating problems into mathematical form, students also cannot determine the data used, and do not check the answers obtained. Students with kinesthetic learning styles fulfill all indicators of difficulty, namely difficulty learning concepts, difficulty applying principles and difficulty solving verbal problems. In difficulties in learning concepts, students hesitate in using memorization or set notation. students cannot use formulas that are in accordance with the conditions of the problem. In difficulties in applying principles, students make mistakes in calculation activities. This happens because students do not know the formula and make mistakes in using the data used. In the difficulty of solving verbal problems, students make mistakes in determining the data used, students do not check their answers again.

Abstract

Purpose: The aim of community service activities in 2023 is to help elementary school teachers in KKG Gugus 1 Sirenja sub-district Donggala district in implementing outdoor mathematics activities with elementary school students for measurement material. Methodology: : This activity takes the form of teacher training with implementation methods including: (1) lecture/presentation, (2) question and answer, and (3) group work. The props used for this activity were measuring tape, rope, LKPD, and objects outside the classroom. After the activity, the teachers filled out a questionnaire to assess the achievements of the activities conducted by the Mathematics Education Study Program service team from the Mathematics and Natural Sciences Education Department at FKIP Tadulako University. Results: Based on discussions during the activity and the results of the questionnaire, information was obtained that all activity participants had never applied mathematics learning outside the classroom. The material presented provided a good understanding of the Outdoor Mathematics Activity, and the results of the activity helped teachers in carrying out activities outside the classroom. Conclusions: Teachers gain a clear understanding of how to implement enjoyable and contextual mathematics learning. This activity successfully fosters students' motivation and engagement in learning, as well as creates a more meaningful learning atmosphere compared to conventional methods that focus solely on memorization. Limitations: The study may be limited by the participants' prior lack of experience with outdoor mathematics activities, and the short duration of the training may not provide a comprehensive understanding of the implementation. Contribution: This community service activity contributes to enhancing the understanding and skills of elementary school teachers in implementing outdoor mathematics activities, thereby potentially improving student engagement and learning outcomes in mathematics.

Abstract

This study aims to describe students' mathematical reasoning ability in solving story problems of two-variable linear equation system. The method used is qualitative with a descriptive approach. The results showed that; (1) students with visual learning styles understood the information well through graphs, but were less thorough in numerical manipulation and verbal instructions, causing calculation errors and mathematical modeling (2) auditorial students were able to understand the problem and plan the solution well, but were less thorough in calculations and had difficulty transferring information to mathematical form, resulting in incorrect answers, (3) kinesthetic students understood the problem and planned the solution, but experienced errors in calculations due to difficulty understanding abstract information, lack of accuracy, and difficulty focusing for a long time. Therefore, it can be concluded that the reasoning ability of 8th grade students of SMPK BK Palu is quite good, it just needs to increase the accuracy of the students themselves.   Keywords: Mathematical Reasoning, SPLDV, Learning Style.
