Abstract

Product design stages are important to consider critically in production. Generally, product design that shall be created by designer, should consider what the customer wants and needs. Nowadays issues, product design does not only consider the “wants and needs” of user, but also how the design can be created by embedding sustainability aspects in the product. Culture is also one of the important aspects which need to be considered in product design as culture affects the way users respond to the product. This paper aims to develop a new model for design development, in which the aspects of culture are incorporated into sustainable product design. By reviewing the existing literature, the authors attempt to identify the gaps of the existing papers, which illustrate how culture affects sustainable product design. Recent papers have only shown that culture influences product design, but they do not explore sustainability and the culture aspects in product design. Due to these gaps, it is therefore important to create a model which will assist designers to elicit sustainable product design based on cultural aspects. In summary, designers need to reflect on the “wants and needs” of users. The framework presented in this paper can be integrated into designers’ and companies’ decision-making during product design development. Keywords: Model, Culture, Sustainable, Product design, Product Development.

Abstract

Bone scaffold fabrication using 3D printing faces a fundamental dilemma: the trade-off between mechanical strength and biological functionality. To address this challenge, a systematic literature review (SLR) of 28 primary research articles was conducted to compare various hydroxyapatite-based scaffold fabrication technologies. The analysis confirms a clear trade-off: Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) excels in mechanical strength, Digital Light Processing (DLP) in architectural precision (<100 µm), and Direct Ink Writing (DIW) in flexibility for bio-functionality, proving no single method is ideal. The main conclusion is that hybrid fabrication strategies—intelligently integrating the strengths of multiple technologies—offer the most promising approach to creating functional scaffolds with an optimal balance of strength and bioactivity for future clinical applications.

Abstract

Crowdfunding is one of the alternative sources of finance for product-based startups. Products are funded if the campaign is considered to be successful in reaching the target. The assessment of the success rate of product campaigns develops into three successive levels, namely overfunding, successful and unsuccessful. Due to the complication of setting up a product campaign on an online crowdfunding platform, a mobile application to aid campaigners needs to be developed. Moreover, it is essential to evaluate its ease to use. This study aims to (1) develop an android-based application, (2) evaluate the usability of the application based on user perceptions. The application ('POSCA') was developed by emphasizing user experience (UX), while the Use Questionnaire evaluated its usability. Ten participants were invited to evaluate the system usability and interface. The results suggest that 'POSCA' has good scores of usability: ‘efficiency’ = 49.11% in the fifth trial, ‘very-easy-to-learn’ (95%), ‘useful’ (85%), ‘easy-to-use’ (87%), and ‘satisfy-the-users’ (88%).

Abstract

This research aims to determine the design specifications for tea drink packaging that appeal to consumers using Kansei and eye-tracking techniques. Kansei Engineering focuses on developing products that align with consumers' feelings and emotional needs. Eye-tracking provides insights into how consumers see and interact with packaging, as evidenced by total fixation duration, allowing for the identification of design elements that attract the most attention and influence consumer perception. The application of eye-tracking and Kansei Engineering helps match customer perceptions of products with their functional and technical specifications, providing a holistic and effective approach to increasing sales and consumer satisfaction. Integrating these two methods makes the design process more consumer-focused, combining emotional and visual appeal, thereby increasing attractiveness and potential consumption. The urgency of this research lies in its potential to revitalize the tea industry in Indonesia by utilizing innovative packaging designs. Enhancing consumer appeal to tea products through the integration of Kansei Engineering and eye-tracking, which are visually and emotionally engaging, addresses the main obstacle to low tea consumption in Indonesia. Thus, it contributes to the growth of the tea market and promotes healthier beverage choices among Indonesian consumers. The research results show that an aesthetic packaging design requires a sports cap type lid, a convex bottle body, a plain motif, and a square cross-section. Ergonomic packaging design requires a flip cap type lid, a wave-shaped bottle body, a textured motif, and a round cross-section. Simple packaging design requires a straw cap type lid, a serrated bottle body, a plain motif, and a square cross-section. This research aims to revitalize Indonesia's tea industry through consumer-oriented packaging design, increasing emotional and visual appeal. Key implications include increased consumer appeal, potential for increased consumption, better marketing strategies, and packaging design innovation that resonates emotionally with consumers.
