Abstract

ABSTRACT  Abstract:The constructivism theory by Piaget and social constructivism or socio-cultural theory by Vygotsky have long been observed as theories of cognitive development. Both of these theories have two opposed ideas that deserve discussion. Piaget’s theory states that language students do their own discovery, so that students are able to construct their own knowledge. Meanwhile, sociocultural theory by Vygotsky states that social interaction influences language acquisition. In learning foreign languages, namely English, these two theories make big contributions that need to be discussed pertaining to how the application of these two theories in English class. Kata-kata kunci: Bahasa Inggris, konstruktivisme, sosio kultural

Abstract

Research on the impacts of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) on perceptions and practices has been conducted separately. This study attempts to investigate a relationship between the involvement of   CPD  and the alignment of teachers’ perceptions and practices about effective English teaching to draw a critical link between the relationship and the alignment. This study involved 6 teachers of English as a Second Language in Indonesia. Qualitative approaches of in-depth interviews and observations were the primary data collection tools. The findings indicate a partial relationship between CPD involvement and the alignment of teacher’s perceptions and practices. Specifically, as part of CPD, teacher’s professional enthusiasm is an indicator for a closer alignment in teacher’s perceptions and practices. Implications drawn from this study suggest that greater conscious raising is required to enhance teachers’ professional enthusiasm since it leads to an alignment between perceptions and practices of quality teaching.

Abstract

This study aimed at investigating primary English teachers’ perceptions and implementation of Pedagogical Content Knowledge in teaching English to young learners, and the consistency between the teachers’ perceptions and implementation of PCK in teaching English to young learners. This study involved three English teachers from three different primary schools in Buleleng regency which were selected by using Convenience sampling technique.  The research design was embedded QUAL-quan mixed method. The instruments used to collect the data were questionnaire, observation sheet, and interview guide. The data were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative. The study demonstrated that teachers had high perceptions of PCK. However, their PCK implementation was very low. Thus, there is no consistency between the perceptions and implementation of PCK. Moreover, based on the result of the interview, the teachers encountered some problems included difficulty in using English in speaking and writing, designing learning activities to facilitate students’ characteristics, choosing media that related to the material, and providing learning media due to lack of facility in the school. Therefore, schools administrators need to promote English teachers’ improvement of pedagogical content knowledge by proposing them to participate in the certain professional development program.

Abstract

This study aimed at describing the primary school English teachers’ perceptions and implementation of pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) of teaching English for young learners (TEYL), as well as the consistency between the perceptions and implementation of PCK in TEYL, especially in Gianyar. This study involved 2 primary school English teachers from 2 different schools in Gianyar which were selected by using convenience sampling. The research design used was embedded mixed method which qualitative is dominantly used. In collecting the data, the instruments used were questionnaire, observation sheet, and interview guide. The results show that both of teachers have a positive perception toward the PCK of teaching English to young learners. However, from the observation data, it is found that both teachers have a very low frequency in implementing the three components of PCK. Moreover, it was revealed that there was lack of consistency between the teachers’ perceptions and the implementation of PCK. Since, there was lack of consistency between the teachers’ perceptions and their implementation of Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) in teaching English for young learners in Gianyar, it is suggested for the teachers to enhance their knowledge about PCK of teaching English to young learners and also enhance their teaching skills by attending seminars or workshops related to teaching English to young learners

Abstract

This study aims to describe and compare the students’ reading competencies on high order items across classes, text genres, and reading indicators in SMPN 1 Ubud. The design implemented was descriptive and comparative research. The population of this research was the seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Ubud and the samples were four intact classes which determined through Cluster Random Sampling. The data were gathered by using Reading Competency Test. The collected data were then analysed descriptively and then inferentially by implementing a parametric statistics, namely: 1) central tendency measures, 2) measures of dispersion, and 3) simultaneous comparison. The result shows the students’ reading competency categorized as poor reading competency and there was not significance different in students’ reading competencies on high order thinking items across classes, text genres, and reading indicators. Poor reading competencies implies both of the students and EFL teachers to train intensively and extensively in reading process in order to have ability in determining the reading indicators of both descriptive and recount texts.

Abstract

Rewarding is one of the factors that influence student learning outcomes so it is important to describe the reward given by the teacher, the teacher's perception of the reward and the student's perception of the reward given by the teacher. This qualitative study aimed to investigate the types of rewards used in teaching English online; frequency of rewarding by teachers in online learning; in what context the reward is given and for what purpose; how teachers perceive rewards in online learning; and how students perceive rewards in online classrooms. The subjects of this study were 116 people consisting of 112 first grade students and 4 first grade teachers. To collect data, there were 3 methods used, namely: observation, recording and taking note. Meanwhile, the main instrument was the researcher himself who was assisted by additional instruments, questionnaires and observation sheets. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively with the Miles and Hubberman model. The results of this study are 1) the teacher gives verbal and object rewards, 2) verbal rewards are more often given, 3) there are three contexts of giving rewards, namely: perfect, almost perfect and needs improvement with different goals, 4) teacher perceptions show giving rewards have a positive influence in academic and non-academic students and 5) students' perceptions of rewards are that they are very happy and motivated after receiving a reward. These results have implications for designing rewards to be diverse and creative to motivate students.

This research used mixed method design with a qualitative dominant. The subjects of this research were three teachers from three different schools in Denpasar who taught English for young learners. Convenience sampling techniques was used in selecting subjects and schools. This research used 4 instruments to get the data, namely: the researcher (2) questionnaire of teachers’ perceptions of pedagogical content knowledge, observation sheet to record teachers’ PCK implementation and (4) interview guide. The result showed the average score of teachers’ perceptions was 3.85 which categorized as high with the interval 3.3335 ≤ M ≤ 4.0005. The average score teachers’ implementation was 8.85 which categorized as low with the interval 7.84 ≤ M ≤ 13.06. In addition, the study found discrepancy between teachers’ perceptions and its implementation. Since the perceptions was in a high category and the implementation was in a low category, this comparison falls in a no consistency category. Such discrepancy caused by the lack of teaching preparation, the uninteresting teaching strategy which included few to no media and the monotonous teaching sources. Teacher professional awareness to do Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for English teachers at primary education needs to be reinforced as an effort of quality assurance.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the perceptions and implementation of Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) of teaching English to young learners by English primary teachers and analyze the consistency between the perceptions and implementation. This study used an embedded mixed method design with qualitative dominant. The sample subjects were 3 English teachers from different schools. The samples and schools were determined by using convenience sampling. Distributing questionnaire, observation, and interview were the main data collection techniques. The results showed the average score of the teachers’ perceptions was 3.6203 and in the interval 3.3335 ≤ M < 4.0005 which categorized high and in a strong qualification. The average frequency of teachers’ implementation was 4.7045 and in the interval 0.329 ≤ M < 5.0795 which categorized very low. Lastly, the consistency between the two showed no consistency between teachers’ perceptions and implementation of PCK. This inconsistency due to personal and institutional challenges faced by the observed teachers such as lack of time, ineffective students’ behavior management, textbook-based teaching material, non-qualified English education background and inadequate school facilities. Implications drawn from the findings regarding efforts on increasing teachers’ professional enthusiasm is discussed.

Abstract

Several conceptions of convergent and divergent thinking are being compared to determine the superior one. However, lateral thinking has emerged, blending convergent and divergent thinking whose potentials impact High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). This conceptual writing aimed to describe the practice of lateral thinking skills in ELT situations. Furthermore, its role in promoting HOTS was discussed, especially in modern classrooms. A library research design was used to gather primary data through literature reviews. The examinations were done qualitatively; triangulated for more reliability and compelling. The findings reveal that lateral thinking is most commonly delivered on a problem-based learning model, which might be utilized to encourage students to think beyond the box in the future. Lateral thinking is also adaptable and applicable in various settings and courses. It is anticipated that practicing lateral thinking in the modern classroom would significantly impact students' problem-solving skills, discover new solutions, create discoveries and breakthroughs. It is highly suggested that both teachers and students employ lateral thinking to ensure that HOTS is trained to its full potential.
