Abstract

The number of school-age children with overweight and obesity is increasing in developing countries. This is a risk factor for prosperity improvement followed by lifestyle changes. People with obesity are reported to be more susceptible to caries than people who are not, and the average numbers of caries in permanent molars increase on higher BMI. Dental caries is an infectious disease as a result of demineralization in enamel and dentine which has a relationship with behavior. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between oral health behavior and dental caries among overweight and obese children in Jetis District, Yogyakarta. This research was an analytical observational study with a cross sectional design. One hundred and ninety-six overweight and obese elementary school children in Jetis District were chosen using multistage cluster random sampling. The independent variable was behavior and the dependent variable was dental caries. Behavior variables were measured using questionnaire based on a Likert scale with validity testing (correlation coefficient > 0.30) and reliability testing (Cronbach alpha = 0.819). The caries was measured using teledentisry during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data analysis used Spearman’s correlation analysis. Behavior of maintaining oral and dental health in overweight and obese children had a relationship with caries (p < 0.001 and r = -0.410). There is no difference between overweight and obese children in maintaining their oral health behavior. The better the oral health behavior of the overweight and obese children, the lower the incidence of caries.

Abstract

Dental and oral therapists are medical workers who work in dental hospitals and play an important role in improving dental and oral health with members of work teams, such as dentists and other medical workers. Factors which influence their performance include motivation and work environment. The present study aims to determine the relation between motivation and work environment of dental and oral therapists working in dental hospitals. The present study was mix method research with explanatory sequential design and used total sampling method. The research subjects were 30 dental and oral therapist respondents who worked in 2 dental hospitals. A total of 19 participants worked at Prof. Soedomo Dental Hospital of Universitas Gadjah Mada, while eleven participants worked at Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta University Dental Hospital. The independent variables were motivation and physical and non-physical work environments. The dependent variable was performance of dental and oral therapist. The measurement was a questionnaire about motivation, and physical and non-physical work environments. Data analysis was conducted using a quantitative parametric measure of Pearson’s correlation test because the data was normally distributed, while qualitative analysis used interview. We found that there was no relation between motivation and performance (p > 0.05), no relation between non-physical work environment and performance (p > 0.05), and no relation between physical work environment and performance (p > 0.05). Qualitative results based on interviews with the dental and oral therapists showed that they had high motivation because they were proud, and they had good perception of the non-physical work environment due to solid work team. They also had good perception of the physical work environment because it was comfortable and had good facilities. Overall, motivation and work environment do not affect the performance of dental and oral therapists working in dental hospitals.

Abstract

Oral health problems among elementary school children are still very common. One of the contributing factors is behavior in maintaining oral hygiene. Behavior is established from knowledge which will then stimulate changes in attitudes and practice. Efforts to enhance knowledge in children can be achieved through counseling. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of oral health counseling using traditional folklore video media on knowledge in children aged 8-9 years. This was quasi-experimental research with a two group pre-test and post-test design. Sampling was conducted using multistage cluster random sampling with a total sample of 112 children aged 8-9 years in elementary schools. The sample was divided into 2 groups: 56 children using traditional folklore video as the intervention group and 56 children using conventional video as the control group. Knowledge variables were measured using a questionnaire; most of the data were not normally distributed so data analysis was carried out using the Mann-Whitney U Test. The results of the difference analysis using the Mann-Whitney U Test at pre-post 2 showed a significant increase in knowledge in both groups. The median knowledge score of the traditional folklore video group showed a greater increase compared to the conventional video group by 13 (6.6 - 20) (p < 0.001). This study concluded that oral health counseling using traditional folklore video is more effective in increasing oral health knowledge in children aged 8-9 years compared to conventional video media.

Abstract

Kondisi jaringan periodontal dinilai berdasarkan status perdarahan (bleeding on probing), tingkat kedalaman poket periodontal (pocket depth), dan kehilangan perlekatan jaringan periodontal (clinical attachment loss).

Abstract

Using a disclosing agent to control plaque is one way to improve dental health and oral tissue. However, this material is not widely known to the public. Red dragon fruit, a mainstay commodity in Blitar Regency, contains betalain which can be used as an alternative disclosure agent. Therefore, the people of Blitar Regency need to be empowered to maintain dental and oral health regarding the potential of dragon fruit as an alternative natural ingredient. The aim is to provide education regarding the potential benefits of dragon fruit as a disclosure agent. The strategy used in this activity is dual media intervention by dentists, namely by using interactive lectures with PowerPoint media and booklet media to community groups in, Blitar Regency. To measure the level of knowledge of the target community, questionnaires were given before and after the activity, as well as checking the OHI-S index. The research results showed that the level of the OHI-S index was in the medium category, while the level of community knowledge showed an increase of 56.78% after being given counseling. This shows that providing dental and oral health education using PowerPoint media and booklet media has proven to be effective in increasing public knowledge. Therefore, it can be concluded that providing education on the use of red dragon fruit as a disclosing agent to the people of Blitar Regency has proven effective in increasing knowledge, so it is hoped that it can improve the community's dental and oral hygiene.

Abstract

Protein and vitamin D3 increase the phosphorus levels of maxillary in malnourished mice pupBackground: Protein deficiency during pregnancy leads to malnutrition in the newborn. One of the signs is low birth weight, which impacts bone and teeth growth problems, most probably related to vitamin D and phosphorus deficiency. Adequate protein and vitamin D3 during the nursing period increase the phosphorus level of bone related to fosfor absorption, which increases in the gut. Objective: This research was conducted to determine the effect of protein and vitamin D3 during the nursing period on increasing phosphorus levels of maxillary in prenatal malnutrition mice. Methods: Experimental study with post-test-only control group design. Thirty the Rattus novergicus Wistar strain mice were divided into five groups (n=6). The positive control group (healthy mice suckle in mother who received a standard protein diet and vitamin D3 0.36 IU/g BW/day/oral), negative control group (malnourished mice suckle in mother who received a low protein diet), and three groups of malnutrition mice suckle in mother who receives intervention standard protein diet with vitamin D3 0.36 IU/g BW/day/oral, low protein diet with vitamin D3 0,36 IU/g BW/day/oral, and a standard protein diet without vitamin D3. The parameter measured was phosphorus levels in the maxillary. Results: ANOVA test results showed significant phosphorus level differences of maxillary between groups (p<0.001), and the Post Hoc test showed differences between the control group with interventions 1, 2, and 3 groups. Conclusion: Intervention of a standard protein diet without vitamin D3 or a low protein diet with vitamin D3 0.36 IU/day/oral significantly increases the phosphorus level of maxillary in malnourished mice. However, combining a standard protein diet and vitamin D3 0.36 IU/day/oral is the most optimum for improving maxillary bone phosphorus levels in malnourished mice.

Abstract

Primary teeth play a vital role as masticatory organs that support the digestive process in children. Preterm low birth weight (PTLBW) is a significant public health concern in many countries and may adversely affect children’s overall health. Understanding the patterns and timing of primary tooth eruption in PTLBW children is important, as it can provide valuable insights for clinical management, including the monitoring of dental development and the implementation of early interventions. This study presents a comprehensive scoping review of the literature on PTLBW and primary tooth eruption. The review followed the framework proposed by Arksey and O’Malley and was further refined using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology for scoping reviews. Literature searches were conducted in electronic databases, including Scopus and PubMed, covering publications from the past 10 years. Eight studies met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed in this review. The findings indicate that PTLBW children experience delayed eruption of primary teeth. Future prospective studies are needed to identify potential biomarkers or predictive indicators for delayed eruption, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of early treatment interventions on dental development and oral health outcomes in this population.

Abstract

Children with intellectual disabilities have cognitive limitations, fine motor impairments and low conceptual understanding, which hinder their ability to perform self-care activities independently, including brushing their teeth. Limited fine motor skills can affect their ability to grip and control a toothbrush, making hand grip strength a relevant variable in efforts to enhance the independence of children with intellectual disabilities in brushing their teeth. The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between toothbrushing behavior and hand grip strength in children with intellectual disabilities. This study employs an observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample selection was conducted using purposive sampling, resulting in 38 respondents. Toothbrushing behavior has a significant relationship with hand grip strength in children with intellectual disabilities. Variables such as frequency, duration and brushing time (morning and night) consistently influence grip type, strength control, independence, grip duration, stability and grip precision. Repeated toothbrushing with a specific pattern can improve fine motor strength and support children's independence and quality of life.
