Abstract

Poetry often uses certain linguistic devices and styles such as metaphors, meters, and rhymes. A level shift can occur when these devices are expressed differently in the target language. Different languages have varying grammatical structures and rules, which can lead to level shift when translating. Cultural and contextual differences may require a level shift to make the poem understandable and comprehensible in the target language. In shift translation, there are two categories, level shift and category shift. This study focuses on the identification of the level shift in the poem Geneva Bulan Juli and its translation. A qualitative descriptive method is used to analyze the data of this study. The result shows that there are 17 level shifts occurring with the majority in the forms of shifts from grammatical forms, in the source language, to lexical forms, in the target language. These shifts include the transformations of verbs to nominal forms, the removals or additions of time elements and aspects, and the replacements of complex syntactic structures into dense and direct diction. Each shift serves not only as a linguistic adjustment but also as a rhetorical strategy to maintain the depth of meanings, emotional nuances, and poetic power in translation. These findings suggest that level shifts are inevitable strategies as well as creative aspects in poetry translation that have important implications for the studies of cross-cultural literary translation.

Abstract

This study examines pronunciation errors among university students learning English as a second language, focusing on members of the English Club, primarily Balinese learners. Despite English being a global language and widely learned as a second language, pronunciation remains a significant challenge, often influenced by the learners' native language. This research employs a qualitative approach with purposive sampling to select a sample of 11 participants who are not majoring in English. These participants were chosen through observation and a questionnaire. Data are collected by having the participants read a story, "Pan Balang Tamak," to identify specific pronunciation errors and understand how their native language affects their English pronunciation. This research finds that the most type of error is misformation in some sounds such as /θ/, /ð/, /ʃ/, /tʃ/, /dʒ/, /ʒ/. This type of error occurs due to the dissimilarity of certain sounds between English and the native language. Additionally, pronunciation skills among English Club members must be improved to reduce recurring errors

Abstract

This study explores the mispronunciation of Indonesian phonemes by non-native speakers, especially content creators on TikTok, highlighting the research gap between formal language training and actual practice on social media. While previous studies have addressed second language phonology acquisition in general, few have examined the context of digital content and its practical implications. This study uses a qualitative approach with observation and analysis techniques of videos uploaded by foreign creators on TikTok. The data was collected from a sample of videos covering a variety of topics and content created by foreign speakers with various native language backgrounds. The results showed a variety of pronunciation and sound errors made by the foreign speakers in using Indonesian. These errors include the pronunciation of nasal sound /ŋ/ in term of consonant and vowels /e/ /ə/ that do not comply with Indonesian pronunciation standards. Factors that influence these pronunciation and sound errors include phonological differences between the foreign speakers' mother tongue and Indonesian, moreover there was too much generalization due to lack of understanding of Indonesian phonetic rules. By understanding the common mistakes, more effective learning strategies can be designed such as minimal pairs /e/-/ə/ and audiovisual-based interactive /ŋ/ sound spectrograms comprehension.

Abstract

AbstractThe utilization of both verbal and visual elements plays an important role in ads. This study seeks to discern the verbal and visual cues and also delve into the significance of colors employed in Cosrx advertisements. The research is grounded in the observation method, a means to elicit comprehensive and nuanced insights. In terms of analytical methodology, the study adopts a descriptive qualitative approach. The analysis yielded a dataset comprising 22 instances, subdivided into 8 verbal and 14 visual cues. Within advertisements, a prominent trend is the inclusion of product ingredient names, such as AHA/BHA, Retinol, and Snail. These names function as a form of verbal sign, effectively conveying key information about the products to readers. This tactic assists in enlightening consumers about the specific components featured in the products, thereby heightening their awareness and understanding. Ultimately, the research elucidates how these strategies effectively communicate product attributes and qualities to consumers, fostering a more informed engagement with the advertised products.

Abstract

This study is one part of a larger study that aims to develop instructional material in the form of a handbook for second-year university students who take an academic writing unit. A qualitative method was employed as the design of this study, involving an in-depth exploration of the lecturer's perspectives and practices. We purposefully recruited four lecturers who taught this unit as study participants to gain authentic perspectives of the intended study context. The data were collected using semi-structured interviews with ten prepared open-ended questions as a guideline and additional questions as needed. Any recurring topics and patterns from the collected data were further identified using a framework developed by Braun and Clarke (2006). The findings categorized issues faced by EFL students in academic writing into three themes: 1) language skills, 2) writing skills, and 3) technology integration. These challenges focus on grammatical structures, paragraph and essay construction, awareness of plagiarism, and proper use of technology to support their writing practice. Meanwhile, in terms of instructional material development, as well as the three factors above, the study revealed the need to include four relevant teaching activities in the process. Therefore, the suggested topics for the instructional materials centre around these four categories.
