Abstract

The main issues of English and Japanese teachers who teach at SMK Tourism Mengwi Tani and SMK PGRI 3 Badung is the essence of mastery of foreign languages, the empowerment of learners and the carrying capacity of instructional media. The purpose of this program is to empower foreign language teachers in improving the quality of teaching. To achieve the target outcome, the method of science applied is transfer technology in the form of workshop, simulation, and, mentoring. Implementation of the program has been implemented in the form of three-day workshop on the application of bihavioristik theory, humanism, cognitive, CTL and multimedia-based foreign language teaching. This activity involves 15 foreign language teachers from two schools. Implementation of pre experimental methods to determine the effect of the action given by comparing the conditions and quantities before the action is given. The model used is a single subject pretest subject, without a control group. Based on the result of paired sample t test analysis using SPSS 17 for Windows software obtained p = 0.000 (t = -8.386, df = 14) <α = 0.05 indicates that Ho is rejected and H1 accepted. While data analysis of pretest and postes, t-observed for df 14 on t-table is 2.03 with a significant level of 0.05. This shows that t-observed 4.36 is bigger than t-table, ie: 2.03. It can be concluded that the workshop on communicative teaching approaches has a significant influence on the ability of foreign language teachers in both partner SMK Tourism schools. From this activity, efforts to strengthen, empower and improve the skills of these teachers can be an inspiration for improving the ability of learners in using foreign language.

Abstract

Penelitian yang mengamati kondisi ketrampilan berbahasa Inggris siswa dalam pendidikan formal telah banyak dilakukan, namun penelitian yang memfokuskan pada pelatihan komunikasi bahasa Inggris untuk pendidikan informal belum menjadi prioritas. Sehingga, fenomena sumber daya linguistik dan ketrampilan bahasa Inggris masyarakat luar sekolah seharusnya terangkat. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui kondisi awal dan perubahan sikap dan ketrampilan bahasa Inggris karyawan restoran melalui metode pelatihan berbasis pelibatan terintegrasi. Metode penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan tindakan berbasis fenomenologi. Sumber data berupa hasil pelatihan dan pengamatan sikap bahasa 38 karyawan Motel Mexucola. Data dikumpulkan melalui metode pengamatan dengan teknik libat cakap dan catat.melalui tes, wawancara, dan kuesioner. Terdapat tiga tahapan analisis, yaitu kondisi awal, pengembangan, dan kemahiran. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan adanya perubahan sikap belajar karyawan Mexicola selama pelatihan berbasis pelibatan terintegrasi, yaitu lebih aktif, kooperatif, dan bertanggungjawab dalam menyelesaikan tugas. Sikap belajar ini berbanding lurus dengan peningkatan kemampuan ketrampilan bahasa Inggris karyawan dengan tingkat ketuntasan 81%. Ini membuktikan pembelajaran dengan pelibatan terintergrasi antara sikap dan pengetahuan, dan antara hasil pelatihan dengan penerapan langsung dilingkungan kerja telah membentuk pembiasaan penggunaan bahasa fungsional. Hasil pelatihan ini telah membantu karyawan Mexicola dalam peningkatan kualitas komunikasi bahasa Inggris sehingga berdampak pada kuantitas kunjungan wisatawan ke restoran ini.

Abstract

This study aimed to strengthen positive learning character, to improve comprehensionin sentence construction and to develop their writing skill. The study made use an actionresearch design with descriptive analysis. The instruments used in the study were in the formsof test items, observation sheet and questioner. The application of the learning model wasconducted in two cycles each of which consisted two sessions. The scopes of the measurementwere focused on affective domain, cognitive domain and psyhomotoric domain. Theeffectiveness of the study could be seen from the increasing main score in every post testtowards the result of pretest and changing learning attitude. The success indicator of the studywas stated that 80% of the students could achieve the minimum passing grade; 75. Based onthe data analysis, 21 students achieved high competency and 17 students got average level.From the character side view, it was observed that 30 students (86%) were active, 33 students(87%) was cooperative and 36 students (94%) had great responsibility. Abstract

Acoustic investigation on Balinese vowel of non-fluent aphasia (NFA) has not been previously paid attention yet. Thus, this study examined the acoustic abnormalities of vowel articulation for patients with NFA. Therefore, spectral and temporal charateristic of their vowel sound are essentially searched by comparing the formant value and prosodic features with the normal vowel articulation. Speech output of two patients were observed and analyzed by using  Praat and the data were described by implementing the theory of clinical phonetics and acoustics. The spectral analysis showed that the inaccurate constriction of the tongue in vowel articulation affected the range of oral tract (F2), pharynx space (F1), and shape of the lips (F3).  Furthermore, the lesion in Broca’s area affected the temporal features of the sounds, such as the lower pitch, lower intensity and longer timing especially voicing environment. The vowels preceded by voiced consonants were significantly longer than those preceded by voiceless ones. So, the highly complex vowels tend to be articulated inaccurately due to articulatory implementation deficit. This finding is consistent with previous results that the spectral and temporal distortion are primarily phonetics rather than phonological planning program.

Abstract

The study aims at figuring out whether there is or not the correlation between motivation andspeaking ability of the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Mengwi in the academic year 2020/2021.The present study used ex-post facto research with correlation design. In this research, there were 36students taken from the eighth grade class of SMP Negeri 3 Mengwi. In collecting the data, theresearcher used a questionnaire that was on the types of motivation by Ryan & Deci (2000). Besides,the researcher used a speaking test by administering the descriptive monologue. The result showed thatthe students’ total score for motivation resulted in 2637, and the speaking ability was 2985. Those datawere analyzed by using SPSS 23.0, which is consisted of the Normality test, Homogeneity test, PearsonProduct Moment, and T-testing. For the result of this research, the hypothesis was significantlyaccepted. According to Pearson Product Moment’s result, the r-value was 0.366, and the significancevalue was 0.014. It shows a significant correlation between motivation and speaking ability of theeighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Mengwi in the academic year 2020/2021. It lies between 0.200– 0.400, which is at a low level.

Abstract

Most students learning English have difficulty identifying general information, specific information, and text meanings and references due to a lack of vocabulary. Therefore, an appropriate and effective teaching strategy should allow students to improve their reading comprehension. The present study attempts to find out the reading comprehension of the eighth-grade students of the SMP Negeri 3 Ubud in the school year 2020/2021 could be improved by the KWL strategy in combination with the image. This research used a classroom action design by conducting two cycles and each cycle consisted of two sessions. The research conducted pre-test, post-test, and questionnaires to collect the data before analyzing it. The results of the research showed that there was a significant improvement in the subjects' performance in the pre-and post-test. From the questionnaire conducted in the last cycle, the students received a positive response regarding their changing learning behavior in relation to the application of the KWL strategy. Based on the findings of the study, the students' reading comprehension can be improved by using the KWL strategy in combination with an image.

Abstract

This study attempted to investigate whether, and how, the student’s English speaking ability was improved by a conversation script-based video shooting activity. Thus, to achieve the research objective, this study made use of a qualitative approach with a classroom action research design. The teaching activities were run on two cycles, each of which consisted of planning, observation, action, and reflections. Two instruments, a test, were used to measure the effectiveness of the teaching activity, and a questionnaire was used to measure students’ learning intention toward the activity. The results showed that the conversation script-based video shooting activity improved the students’ speaking ability. Furthermore, the activity also motivated and encouraged the students to involve doing conversation. It can be seen from the increasing learning achievement from the mean score of the pre-test was 53.17, the mean score of post-test 1 was 76.53, and the mean score of the final post-test was 83.53. In addition, students revealed positive academic encouragement toward the technique. So, a conversation script-based video shooting activity is suggested to give a practical impact on the students’ speaking skills because it provides equal opportunity for students to perform their English language competence in any roles written in the scripts in daily life context.

Abstract

The investigation that focuses on English language learning by adult starters at the workplace is very much challenging. Thus, this study attempted to elaborate whether emotion (self-confidence, motivation, or anxiety) correlates with teaching strategy (CBI, CLT, and TBLT) and English language performance. This study applied a combination of qualitative with phenomenology design and quantitative with analytic descriptive design to analyze the effect of emotion on teaching strategy. The population was 355 employees whose ages range from 25 to 30. this study involved 100 samples using a random sampling technique. The questionnaire consisted of 15 questions concerning self-confidence, 15 questionnaires about motivation, and 15 questionnaires about anxiety. A performance test measured the student’s language competence. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics with SPSS 25, t-test, and Pearson Product Moment. The finding revealed that the emotion correlates positively either with the teaching strategy or with the learning achievement. The stronger the adult learners feel self-confidence and emotion, and less anxiety the more effective the CBI, CLT, TBLT can encourage their language performance. The factors that make emotion correlate more positively with language performance are (1) the demands of better achievements, (2) self-responsibility, and (3) teaching strategy.

Abstract

Communicative competence approach in Indonesia has been applied in junior and senior high school. It emerged due to the fact that the audio-lingual approach has been regarded to be a failure. This can be seen from the graduates’ inability to use the language for communication in real situations. It is said that this approach is very successfully applied in Europe; but in Indonesia, it is still a big question, since the situation and condition are very much different from that of European countries. The obstacles existing in Indonesia are; big classes, linguistic environment, teachers’ inability to use English, time allotment, etc. One thing for sure is that however successful an approach in some developed countries is, it is quite possible this approach might be a failure when applied in Indonesia due to some different conditions and situations as stated above. Consequently, it is advisable for the English teachers to be selective in choosing which approach is suitable for teaching what so that we do not always get confused with the mode of language teaching which very often changes in foreign countries.

Abstract

Analysing the ability of the employees in business English correspondence seems challenging in edult learners teaching because it can encourage the psycholingusitic domain in bilingual learning. The present study attempted to find out whether the writing skill of the employees in Sukavathi villa in business English correspondences skills can be improved through content based instruction (CBI). The subject of the present study was 32 employees. The main characteristic of the study was an action reaseach with descriptive approach. Moreover, series of test and observation techniques were used to collect the data that were anaylised descriptively. The result revealed that the CBI impacted the students’ abilities in writing English formal and informal letters or E-mails for any business purposes. The mean score of the pre-test was 54.56 that is categorized poor. After the implementation of CBI, the achievement increased from 63.81 to 80.25, being categorized very good. Furthermore, the learning process with CBI showed that 10% of employee incolved low participation, 25% moderate partcipation, and 65% high participation. The study suggest that bililngual learning for adult learners requires affective encouragement, commitment, and stimulation towards the target language mastery
