Abstract

The present study is an ex-post facto research with correlation design was intended to figure out the significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension of the eighth-grade students of SMP TP 45 Denpasar in the 2021/2022. The sample of this study was 40 students which were taken with a random sampling method. The matching cloze procedure test and the short answer test were used as research instruments. Based on computations by SPSS 20 version, score of coefficient correlation, which is obtained 0.615 and this score was compared with the r-table with degree of significant 5%, Therefore, the score of coefficient correlation was very high in comparison with the score of r-table, which means that the alternative hypothesis was accepted. It was found that there was a significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension of the eighth-grade students of SMP TP 45 Denpasar in academic year 2021/2022.

Abstract

The study investigated whether, and how, Communicative Language Teaching Approaches (CLTA) significantly influenced students’ academic emotions and achievement in self-directed distance learning. The participants were 76 university students in Denpasar. The data were collected through exam results and two questionnaires. Questionnaire A measured students’ learning intentions, self-encouragement, and motivation, while questionnaire B was the DASS 21. Pearson Correlation was used to analyze the effect of CLTA on student learning intention and performance, and their perception of depression, anxiety, and stress. Descriptive analysis was also performed to examine the students’ levels of negative emotions toward their academic experience. The quantitative results showed a significantly positive correlation between lecturers’ content-based instruction (CBI) and learning intention, rob (0.536) rcv (0.226); lecturers’ communicative language teaching (CLT) correlated positively with learning encouragement, rob (0.655) rcv (0.226); and lecturers’ task-based language teaching (TBLT) correlated positively with motivation, rob (0.671) rcv (0.226). This means that the CLTA strategy strongly and positively encouraged students to study and decreased the students' experiences of negative emotions. The study revealed that the more intensively the CLTA is applied, the fewer students feel depressed, and the better the students’ achievement is. The study suggests that CLTA activates affective, cognitive, and conative norms even in online learning environments.

Abstract

Abstrak The study of English assessment investigated the types and quality of test distributed to junior high school students and develop it into a software based test module. The study aimed to know how valid and reliable is the multiple-choice test as a competence measurement device. The method or the design of the study applied the research and development with 4D phases, namely define, design, develop, disseminate through 1) checking syllabus, observing learning process, and constructing test items as module draft (INPUT), 2) considering validity and reliability of the test from the expert including trying out the tests (PROCESS); and 3) designing the appropriate test items into software products (OUTPUT). The source of data was taken from the result of observation sheet, interview sheet, questionaire and the the result of tryout of model tests given to SMPN 2 and SMPN 3 Mengwi students. The result of the study after being analysed quantitatively showed that 63 test items was valid and 37 was invalid. The fifty-valid test was distributed to students of SMPN 3 Mengwi. Based on the result, the mean score was 72.53. 21 of 40 students passed the minimum passing grade achievement ank and 19 students still needed improving. The highest score was 95 and the lowest one was 26. The medium was 78 and the mode was 53. After measuring the reliability level, the standard deviation ranged 0.50 – 1.00. meaning that the test was appropriate to be applied as measuring device.The valid test was then reconstructed to be raw material of software module. Abstract

Abstract Excellent English Speaking ability and assessment of oral production can be one of success indicators for students of English study program at Mahasaraswati Denpasar University to be qualified teachers. However, students of semester four G still found weaknesses to obtain. This present research was conducted to improve their learning achievement in speaking skill and assessment. It made use a classroom action research design through communicative approach type academic debate and oral production test. The initial condition of students speaking skill was categorized as poor level because the mean score of pretest was 50. The application of cyclic process, which consisted of two cycles, involved four steps: planning, action, observation and reflection. The increasing ability in each cycle could be seen from their scores either individual or team. The individual score of each session for three aspects of debate had gradually increased. The mean score of cycle I was 72 which can be categorized as sufficient level and cycle two was 83 which meant at very good level. The students’ responses were also positive after this learning model was applied. They also admitted that they had learned many things which were related to their skill in controlling emotion, practicing speaking ability, enriching vocabularies, and arguing in positive attitude. Based on the finding and discussion, the communicative approach type academic debate and oral production assessment can improve students’ ability in speaking English. Abstract

ABSTRAK Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui tingkat pengaruh sistem pembelajaran berbasis konteks kehidupan sehari-hari melalui perekaman vidio terhadap kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris. Desain penelitian menggunakan pendekatan pra-eksperimen dengan model tes awal-tes akhir kelompok tunggal. Siswa SMPN 3 Kuta Selatan merupakan sumber data yang dikumpulkan melalui metode probality random sampling dengan jumlah sampel 36 peserta didik dari 6 kelas yang ada. Tes awal berupa unjuk kerja berbicara bahasa Inggris diberikan untuk mengetahui kemampuan awal mereka. Kemudian diberikan perlakuan dengan model pembelajaran yang inovatif melalui perekaman vidio yang mana materinya mengacu pada konteks kehidupan nyata. Untuk mengetahui pengaruh model pembelajaran terhadap kemampuan siswa, mereka diberikan tes akhir berupa unjuk kerja. Berdasarkan pengamatan hasil, penelitian ini menunjukan nilai rerata tes awal hanya 43.22 dan nilai rerata pos tes untuk mengukur tingkat keefektifan tindakan adalah 51.11. Dengan menggunakan t-test dapat ditemukan bahwa t-observed dengan tingkat signifikansi 0.05, yaitu 4.63 lebih tinggi dari t-table yaitu 2.03, maka hipotesa penelitian ini diterima yaitu sistem pembelajaran berbasis kehidupan sehari-hari melalui perekaman vidio memiliki pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris siswa. Ini dapat diperkuat dari data tambahan hasil wawancara dan kuesioner yang mana mereka merasa proses pembelajaran lebih menarik dan menantang. Abstract

Abstract This present study investigated any pattern of phonological form and supra segmental distribution on English utterance of cross marriage couples . The research applied qualitative-descriptive design because the data had a deep phenomenological common ground. Language represents a giving meaning and interpretation towards whatever experienced by speakers and explores the opponents’ intentions in natural way. Subject of the study were the cross-marriage couples taken through snowball technique. The focus of the study was the segmental utterances on discourse context which could show any intention interpreted opponents. The data were in the form of utterances of the couples in any kinds of topics collected by recording them. The data was classified into sound elements analyzed by structural phonology and intention delivery analyzed by speech act theory. From the data, it was found that there was some different phonemic transcription, stress contour, pitch, and range of intonation between the speaker from Bali and Speaker from Australia. This was caused by deeply imprinted Balinese sound concepts. The utterances showed the illocutionary force and perlocutionary force. From the stress pattern, it was found that there were some patterns of transition-relevance place and other-speaker turn repetition that indicated to mull over. The last finding was free variants in discourse. The forms of nasalized vowels in non- nasal context showed that the speaker was complaining. Abstract

Speaking is an important skill because it is assumed that it is how speakers deliver thoughts and feeling. The results of the pre-test showed that most of the students in VIII H of SMPN 3 Sukawati in academic year 2019/2020 faced problem in speaking. In addition, they had difficulty in grammar, pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Moreover, the objective of this study was to know whether or not speaking skill of the eighth grade students of SMPN 3 Sukawati in academic year 2019/2020 can be improved through Balinese fable storytelling. Thus, to achieve the objective of the study, the researcher conducted a class room action research. The research was done in two cycles and each cycle consisted of two sessions. The research instruments were given in order to collect the data needed. The data were analyzed by comparing the results of the pre-test and post-test which showed there were significant improvements of the subjects’ mean score from the pre-test to post-test. As supporting data, the questionnaire was also administered at the end of the last cycle and the results showed the students’ positive responses on the implementations of Balinese fable storytelling to improve speaking skill. Based on the results of pre-test, post-test and questionnaire, it could be concluded that speaking skill of the eighth grade students of SMPN 3 Sukawati in academic year 2019/2020 can be improved through Balinese fable storytelling.

Abstract

Baru-baru ini, Indonesia melakukan peralihan kurikulum pendidikan dari Kurikulum 2013 menuju Kurikulum Merdeka. Dalam menyikapi perubahan tersebut, diperlukan upaya peningkatan pemahaman guru sehingga esensi perubahan kurikulum dapat dicapai. Tujuan penelitian ini yaitu untuk meningkatkan pemahaman guru tentang asesmen pembelajaran Kurikulum Merdeka melalui strategi Learning Community (LC). Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di SMPN Negeri 2 Kerambitan dari bulan Juni sampai dengan Agustus 2023 yang melibatkan 46 orang guru. Pendekatan pra eksperimen digunakan dalam pelaksanaan penelitian ini dengan one group pretest-posttest design. Data dikumpulkan dengan instrumen tes yang terdiri atas 15 soal pilihan ganda. Data yang diperoleh selanjutnya dianalisis secara deskriptif yang dilanjutkan dengan uji Wilcoxon. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan peningkatan rata-rata pemahaman guru terhadap asesmen pembelajaran Kurikulum Merdeka setelah penerapan strategi LC yang signifikan (p<0,05). Ditemukan pula terjadi pengurangan gap pemahaman antarguru setelah perlakuan. Penelitian lebih lanjut diperlukan untuk mengungkap efektivitas LC dalam meningkatkan pemahaman guru terhadap asesmen pembelajaran Kurikulum Merdeka dengan melibatkan subjek yang lebih luas serta menggunakan pendekatan penelitian kuasi eksperimen.

Abstract

Dengan pengetahuan tentang proses mental kata maupun frasa bahasa Inggris, guru EFL dapat mengaktivasi kemampuan siswa dalam mengantisipasi kata sesuai konteks. Akan tetapi, tidak banyak rujukan yang dapat membantu menjelaskan fenomena ini. Untuk itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan bagaimana kecenderungan siswa EFL dalam mengantisipasi kata baik dalam ujaran maupun tulisan. Untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kuantitatif dan kualitatif. 20 Partisipan yang direkut adalah siswa SLUB kelas Bilingual. Intrumen yang digunakan adalah 10 test tulis dan 10 test pancingan lisan. Data dianalis secara deskriptif melalui analisis konten dari perspetif teori sistem antisipasi kata. Hasil penelitian mengindikasikan kemampuan siswa mengantiipasi kata dalam tulisan dikategorikan “sedang” sementara untuk lisan dinilai “rendah”. Terdapat kecenderungan yang signifikan siswa memilih kata dengan tepat berdasarkan pengetahuan makna seluruh kalimat dan pertimbangan hubungan makna kata dalam pilihan yang disediakan. Sementara, analisis konten menunjukkan bahwa siswa memilih kata berdasarkan kata sebelumnya bukan setelahnya. Artinya kata yang tepat muncul dengan mengantisipasi fitur-fitur semantik dan gramatikal kata yang diikuti bukan bukan sebaliknya. Dengan temuan ini, guru EFLdisarankan untuk menstimulasi fitur-fitur semantik kata yang memeiliki agreement dengan kata -kata lain dalam konteks mellaui strategi pengajaran yang inovatif.

Abstract

Corrective feedback (CF) can encourage students to establish realistic learning objectives. Nevertheless, there has been limited investigation on how EFL learners perceive and view feedback delivered by English native teachers, particularly in relation to gender differences. Hence, this study aimed to correlate student perception with perspectives on native English teachers’ feedback, determine differences in male and female perception and describe the level of student's perspectives on the feedback. Quantitative and qualitative methods, with a correlational research design, were employed. Using a simple random sampling technique, a sample of 30 was selected from 150 students from a Bilingual class of Sekolah Lanjut Umum Bawah (SLUB). Post-class questionnaires and interviews were conducted to gather data, which were then analyzed using Pearson Correlation, t-test, and thematic interview analysis. The findings indicated a significant correlation between students' perception and perspective on native English teachers' feedback. In addition, both genders had positive perceptions, with males displaying a more favorable perspective on teacher feedback than females. It also showed students’ "very positive" perspective on teacher feedback. This study highlights the positive impact of English native teachers' feedback on students' views and recommends EFL teachers to employ CF, considering gender-specific needs.
