Abstract

Analysing the ability of the employees in business English correspondence seems challenging in edult learners teaching because it can encourage the psycholingusitic domain in bilingual learning. The present study attempted to find out whether the writing skill of the employees in Sukavathi villa in business English correspondences skills can be improved through content based instruction (CBI). The subject of the present study was 32 employees. The main characteristic of the study was an action reaseach with descriptive approach. Moreover, series of test and observation techniques were used to collect the data that were anaylised descriptively. The result revealed that the CBI impacted the students’ abilities in writing English formal and informal letters or E-mails for any business purposes. The mean score of the pre-test was 54.56 that is categorized poor. After the implementation of CBI, the achievement increased from 63.81 to 80.25, being categorized very good. Furthermore, the learning process with CBI showed that 10% of employee incolved low participation, 25% moderate partcipation, and 65% high participation. The study suggest that bililngual learning for adult learners requires affective encouragement, commitment, and stimulation towards the target language mastery

Abstract

Balinese literature reflects numerous philosophical and spiritual concepts to live in harmony within the social and natural environment. Instead of identifying and describing the types of figurative speech, this study determined whether the figure of speech in Balinese literature reflected the education formation within Eco-cultural sustainability. Through a qualitative approach Balinese simile, metaphor, analogy, and personification found in 51 stanzas written in 7 lines to 10 lines were collected by a note-taking technique to know the dominant use of the figure of speech, characteristics, and education values. Each expression was analyzed using content analysis. The findings revealed that Balinese literature under investigation was composed of 42% comparative figures, 36% contradictive figures, and 22% correlative figures. Simile and metaphor were mostly expressed in Sampik Ingtai and the contradictive figure including hyperbole and irony took the second place. However, the number of animals, nature, and plants used as comparative words-object are rare and nearly extinct. This study enhanced a model of Ecocultural pedagogy to actualize character education for students’ social care and respect for the environment. So, the figure of speech in Balinese literature plays a prominent role in developing students’ affective competence holistically to gain sustainable intelligence, skills, and human value.

Abstract

   This study aimed to examine the form, function, and meaning of Balinese expressions from the perspective of systemic functional linguistic theory (SFL). This study used a phenomenological-based approach. The data consisted of 51 stanzas and each stanza contained 7 to 9 lines collected through document analysis and they were classified into language meta function elements. The data were analyzed through the classification of the content of the text, the characteristics of the text, and the application of the SFL model. The findings of this study indicate that Gaguritan Sampik has 4 types of figures of speech, namely similes, metaphor, hyperbole, and personification with comparative meaning that bridges cognitive meaning to imaginative meaning. The findings of the LSF analysis show that all of the poems in Gaguritan Sampik have ideational, interpersonal, and textual metafunction elements, but this model cannot access chronological stages and holistic meanings due to position shifting, phrase deletion, or phrase duplication in the literary writing system. However, the LSF model proves that a coherent and coherent figure of speech mechanism can evoke the reader's imagination so that it absorbs philosophical values in the text. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji bentuk, fungsi, dan makna kiasan ungkapan majas patah hati bahasa Bali dalam geguritan “Sampik” dari perspektif teori linguistik sistemik fungsional (LSF). Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif berbasis fenomenologi. Data terdiri atas 51 stanza dan tiap stanza terdiri atas 7 sampai 9 baris dikumpulkan melalui analisis dokumen dan diklasifikasikan ke dalam unsur metafungsi bahasa. Data dianalisis melalui tahapan klasifikasi isi teks, karakteristik teks, dan penerapan model LSF.  Temuan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa geguritan “Sampik” memiliki empat jenis majas, yaitu perbandingan, metafora, hiperbola, dan personifikasi dengan makna komparatif yang menjembatani makna kognitif menuju makna imajinatif. Temuan analisis LSF menunjukan semua syair pada geguritan “Sampik” memiliki unsur-unsur metafungsi ideasional, interpersonal, dan tekstual, tetapi model ini tidak dapat mengakses tahapan kronologis dan makna secara holistik akibat adanya pemindahan posisi, pelesapan prasa, atau duplikasi prasa pada sistem penulisan sastra. Walaupun demikian, model LSF membuktikan bahwa mekanisme majas yang runut dan padu dapat membangkitkan imaji pembaca sehingga meresapi nilai filosofis dalam teks.

Abstract

Pemodelan sikap berbahasa guru dalam pendidikan anak usia dini dapat berpengaruh besar terhadap perkembangan karakter, kognisi, serta motorik anak. Sehingga, strategi berbahasa guru PAUD yang tepat dapat membentuk anak menjadi berkarakter, cerdas dan trampil. Dengan demikian, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana strategi sikap kebahasaan guru dapat memaksimalkan tujuan afektif, kognitif, dan psikomotorik bahasa anak. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan strategi fenomenologi. Data dikumpulkan dari 20 guru PAUD di Kecamatan Mengwi melalui tes unjuk kerja mengajar dalam vidio dan kuesioner. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa guru berhasil membangkitkan olah rasa bahasa, mengaktivasi realisasi bahasa, dan membangkit nalar kebahasaan Anak. Tingkat kompleksitas kalimat guru dikategorikan Sedang dengan jenis kata sederhana. Dari unsur prosodik, tempo ujaran guru bervariatif mulai dari Pelan ke Sedang dengan penggunaan gestur dan kontak mata yang tepat. Dengan demikian, penelitian ini menyatakan bahwa pemodelan verba pedagogi, guru dapat mengoptimalkan perkembangan sikap, nalar, dan realisasi bahasa anak dengan baik

Abstract

The correlation between grammar mastery and writing ability was the purpose of this research study. To conduct this research, the data has collected by the researcher by using correlational research. In collecting the data, the researcher used instrument. The sample were 31 students of the eight grade students of SMPN 4 Mengwi. Quantitative data was used to apply in technique analyzing data. To get the data, the researcher used Pearson Product Moment and the data was taken from grammar and writing test. From the result showed rxy is (0.462) which that in the medium correlation. It means that null hypothesis (Ho) in this research was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It can be said that, the students with grammar mastery will be easier to writing ability. From the result it can be concluded that there was a positive correlation between grammar mastery and writing ability.

Abstract

This study examines how reading comprehension can be enhanced through an intervention of PQRST. This study used a classroom action research design by monitoring and controlling the teaching-learning process. The subjects of the study were 30 eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Tampaksiring. The data were collected through tests and questionnaires after the instruction of PQRST in 2 cycles. The study revealed that the student’s comprehension of the contents of English text gradually increased as can be seen from the comparison of the pre-test which was 52.33 categorized as “insufficient” and the mean score post-test 1 was 79.56 categorized as “good”, and the mean score of post-test II was 88.36 categorized as “excellent” achievement. The result of the post-test in each cycle clearly showed that there was significant improvement concerning the subjects’ ability in reading comprehension. Besides, the subjects also gave positive responses to the implementation of PQRST technique in teaching reading comprehension. Therefore, through this technique, the EFL teachers can allocate the students’ difficulties, stimulate students’ knowledge, and provoke students’ positive learning behavior.

Abstract

More evidence is needed to determine if English language sounds are influenced by Balinese EFL students. Therefore, this study attempted to examine the dominance of tonal systems in English and Balinese using dual-coding theory. This study used a qualitative approach to describe the English language of Balinese-speaking students as a segmental category. This study included 76 English students from Denpasar. The instruments consisted of a 65 English word list, a picture list, and ten sentences. The articulatory phonetic and referential techniques were used to classify each data set. Accordingly, the students activated the English system more independently but managed to translate it phonetically into Balinese. The phonetic translation, on the other hand, can be pure English, mixed Balinese, and English, or simply pure Balinese. This tendency is influenced by students' phonological awareness, learning experience, and daily practice. According to the results of this study, the four levels of English pronunciation by students are transcription, perception, phonological process, and phonetic translation. At the level of perception, the Balinese sound system is activated in English. This study suggests that English learners and teachers in Bali should use explicit learning to reduce pronunciation errors.

Abstract

The determination of phonological alteration patterns of speech disorder of Broca aphasia is the scope of neurolincguistic study that needs more attention. Thus, this study investigates the alteration of the phonological feature in Broca's aphasics. This phenomenology-based research involves the observation of two patients with nonhemorrhagic stroke with impaired language modality such as spontaneous speech, naming, reading, writing, but intact comprehension. Data was collected from observation method with listening, involvement, conversation, and noting. The data were recorded wiy Sonny voice recorder. The instruments for language modality measurements were 65 picture list, 65 word list, 1 sheet of  conversation script, and 1 reading text. The data analysis provided the implementation of generative phonology. The results showed that the substitution of marked features by less marked features due to the errors of the articulation planning program. The more complex the articulation of the phonemes, the more often the segments are altered. This study also found the violation of the sonority scale and reconstruction of the syllabic structure. The alteration of segments with the identic place of articulation with features with a different manner of articulation occurs due to phonological neighboring density. So, this study has contributed to clinical recommendations for phonological disorder for neurologists and speech therapists.Penetapan pola alterasi fonologis pada gangguan bunyi afasia Broca merupakan ruang lingkup kajian neurolinguistik yang belum begitu banyak menjadi perhatian. Penelitian ini mengkaji jenis dan pola alterasi fitur fonologis tuturan bahasa Bali pasien afasia Broca. Penelitian deskriptif berbasis fenomenologi ini melibatkan dua pasien stroke nonhemoragik (SNH) dengan pelemahan modalitas bahasa, seperti terbata-bata, penamaan, membaca, menulis, namun keupayaan pemahaman masih baik. Data dikumpulkan melalui metode pengamatan dengan teknik simak, libat, cakap, dan catat. Semua data direkam dengan Sonny voice recorder. Instrumen untuk mengukur modalitas bahasa menggunakan 65 daftar gambar, 65 daftar, kata, 1 skrip percakapan, dan 1 teks bacaan. Semua alterasi bunyi ujaran dianalisis melalui fonologi generatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya alterasi fitur-fitur bermarkah di semua distribusi oleh fitur yang kurang bermarkah karena konsep artikulasi yang keliru. Semakin tinggi kompleksitas artikulasi bunyi, target semakin sering bunyi tersebut mengalami alterasi. Fitur bunyi dengan kompleksitas yang tinggi [+hambat] cenderung diganti dengan fitur bunyi yang kompleksitas artikulasinya setingkat lebih rendah [+frikatif]. Fonem dengan fitur fonologis bermarkah mengalami proses penyederhanaan melalui alterasi bunyi dalam bentuk substitusi, pelesapan, penyisipan, penambahan, dan mutasi. Alterasi terjadi berdasarkan kesamaan fitur tempat artikulasi, namun berbeda pada cara artikulasinya. Hasil penelitian ini dapat menjadi petunjuk ilmiah baik bagi disiplin ilmu klinisi bahasa maupun terapis gangguan berbahasa.

Abstract

The question of whether the absorption and response of visual stimulation are more effective than the auditory stimulation of English sounds by Indonesian-speaking students has just been answered. This study aims to describe the mental system of visual excitatory selection of words and to hear the sounds of English and Indonesian laterally from a neurolinguistic perspective. This study applies a phenomenology-based qualitative descriptive approach. The informants of this study were 22 elementary school children. The method used to collect data in this study is the method of observation and literature with recording and note-taking techniques. The techniques used to analyze the data are statistical and descriptive analysis. The results of this study indicate that the response to word sight stimulation is longer than the sound auditory stimulus trigger. From the point of view of the lateral mechanism, the responses of elementary school students to Indonesian word stimuli in English are, on average, more extended than the period for responses to English word stimuli in Indonesian. It is due to the limitations of the English lexicon, factors outside the language, psychological conditions, and combinations of motor movements that interrupt the focus of word calling. The lateral processing system model of words and sounds contributes to the teacher as a guide for implementing teaching strategies.

Abstract

Most students who are studying English have difficulty identifying general information, specific information, and textual meaning and reference because they lack vocabulary. Therefore, an appropriate and effective teaching strategy should enable the students to improve their reading comprehension. The present study attempts to find out if the reading comprehension of the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Ubud in the academic year 2020/2021 could be improved through KWL strategy combined with pictures. This research made use of a classroom action design by running two cycles and each cycle consisted of two sessions. running two cycles and each cycle consisted of two sessions. This research was done in two cycles and each cycle consisted of two sessions. The research administered pre-test, post-test, and questionnaire in order to collect the data before they were analyzed. The findings of the research revealed that there were significant improvements in subjects' achievement from the pre-test and post-test. From the questionnaire that was administered in the last cycle, the students gained positive responses in terms of their changing learning behavior toward the application of KWL strategy. Based on the findings of the study, the student’s reading comprehension can be improved through KWL strategy combined with the picture.
