Abstract

ABSTRACT The childhood stage is the most important stage in human development. The psychosocial development of preschool children is initiative and feelings of guilt. However, some parents have problems with their children using verbal violence in communicating. This causes children to become aggressive, withdraw from the environment, and can hinder learning at home and school. This research uses a descriptive correlation design with a cross sectional approach. The sample consisted of 100 parents, with sampling using a stratified random sampling technique. The analysis of this research consists of univariate using descriptive tests and bivariate using chi-square tests. The majority of respondents who used verbal violence in communicating were in the low category, amounting to 80 people (80%). The emotional mental health status of preschool age children is dominated by normal, numbering 75 people (75%). Respondents who used verbal violence in communicating were in the high-medium category with the emotional mental health status of normal and troubled preschool age children totaling 12 people (100%), while respondents who used verbal violence in communicating with children were dominated by the low none category with the emotional mental health status of normal preschool age children was 69 people (78.4%). Therefore, the statistical test results obtained a p value (0.068) α (0.05). This research shows that there is no relationship between verbal violence in parent-to-child communication and the mental-emotional health status of preschool-age children. It is hoped that health workers will carry out early detection using verbal violence questionnaires in parental communication and KMME in preschool children.  Keywords: Preschool Aged Children, Verbal Violence, Parental Communication, Emotional Mental Health Status.

Abstract

Dermatitis is a common skin inflammation affecting school-aged children, particularly in areas with poor sanitation such as wetlands. This study aimed to analyze factors associated with the incidence of dermatitis among school-aged children living in wetland areas. This research employed a descriptive correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 102 children aged 6–12 years were selected using purposive sampling based on inclusion criteria. Data were collected through a structured 28-item questionnaire that had been previously validated and tested for reliability. Data analysis included univariate and bivariate analyses using the Chi-Square test with a significance level of 0.05. A total of 64 respondents (62.7%) experienced dermatitis. There were significant associations between dermatitis incidence and environmental sanitation (p<0.001), personal hygiene (p<0.001), and allergy history (p<0.001). However, gender was not significantly associated with dermatitis (p=0.683). Poor environmental sanitation, inadequate personal hygiene, and a history of allergies are significantly associated with the incidence of dermatitis among school-aged children in wetland areas. Community-based preventive interventions are recommended to reduce the risk of dermatitis in this population.

Abstract

Stunting in children is a chronic nutritional problem influenced not only by inadequate nutrient intake but also by family caregiving practices, including paternal involvement. Fathers’ roles in nutritional provision, caregiving, and health monitoring may affect the nutritional status of young children. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between paternal roles and the incidence of stunting among children aged 12–36 months in the working area of Lima Puluh Subdistrict Primary Health Center, Pekanbaru City. This study employed a descriptive correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 108 children aged 12–36 months selected using a cluster random sampling technique. Paternal roles were measured using a father involvement questionnaire, while children’s nutritional status was assessed based on height-for-age (H/A) indicators according to WHO standards. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test. The results showed that most children had normal nutritional status (78.7%) and the majority of fathers demonstrated good involvement in caregiving (91.7%). A significant relationship was found between paternal roles and the incidence of stunting among children aged 12–36 months (p = 0.003), where good paternal involvement was associated with a lower risk of stunting. These findings highlight the importance of engaging fathers in family-based stunting prevention efforts, particularly during the first 1,000 days of life.

Abstract

Speech delay in early childhood has an impact on communication skills and long-term development. The mother's role is very important in providing stimulation because she spends the most time with the child. Each mother has a unique experience in dealing with this condition. This study aims to explore mothers' experiences in overcoming speech delay in early childhood. This study used a descriptive qualitative method with 4 participants selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Colaizzi's thematic method. The results showed six main themes: (1) mothers' understanding of speech delay and the consultation and therapy measures taken, (2) emotional reactions in the form of rejection and sadness before accepting the child's condition, (3) stimulation efforts at home and the use of traditional medicine, (4) children's speech development varied with some showing significant improvement, (5) limited time and cost as the main obstacle, and (6) mothers' advice to other parents and therapy services. In conclusion, mothers of children with speech delay face complex emotional challenges but still try to support their children's development through various interventions. Better emotional support and access to therapy services are needed to help mothers overcome these barriers

Abstract

Picky eater behavior is an eating problem characterized by a lack of desire to try new food variations that often occurs in preschool-aged children. Picky eaters can be influenced by many factors, one of which is the early experience of eating including breastfeeding. The introduction of various flavors through breast milk transmission can make children later become more familiar with new flavors. This study aims to determine the relationship between breastfeeding history and the incidence of picky eaters in preschool children. This study used a cross sectional approach. The sample was 157 respondents who were taken using proportionate random sampling technique at 3 kindergartens in Pekanbaru. The instruments used to obtain data on picky eater behavior in this study were Child Eating Behavior Questionnaire (CEBQ) and Breastfeeding History Questionnaire. This study used univariate and bivariate analysis with chi-square statistical test. The results of the analysis showed that there were 60 respondent children who had picky eater behavior and 97 respondent children who had non-picky eater behavior. A total of 110 respondent children have a history of exclusive breastfeeding, 4 respondent children have a history of predominant breastfeeding and 43 respondent children have a history of partial breastfeeding. The results of the chi square statistical test showed that there was a significant relationship between breastfeeding history and the incidence of picky eaters in preschool children with p value = 0.001 (< α 0.05).

Abstract

Children with leukemia undergo treatment in the form of chemotherapy. The side effects of chemotherapy can lead to fatigue, which in turn may affect their daily functioning and overall quality of life. This study aims to analyze the relationship between fatigue and the quality of life in pediatric leukemia patients undergoing chemotherapy at Arifin Achmad General Hospital, Pekanbaru. The research design used is a descriptive correlational study with a cross-sectional approach. The study sample consisted of 41 children with leukemia (26 boys and 15 girls) aged 5–12 years, selected through purposive sampling at the Seruni Unit. The study utilized the PedsQL™ MFS (Multidimensional Fatigue Scale) and PedsQL™ 4.0 (Generic Core Scales) questionnaires. The results showed that the average fatigue score among the children was 44.0, indicating a moderate level of fatigue, with the majority experiencing cognitive function impairment (mean score of 16.5). The average quality of life score was 61.1, with most children experiencing physical function impairment (mean score of 22.5), and 29 respondents (70.7%) were found to have impaired quality of life. The Spearman Rank test revealed a significant relationship between fatigue and quality of life in children with leukemia undergoing chemotherapy. The findings of this study are expected to serve as a reference for improving the quality of life of children with cancer by minimizing the side effects of their treatment, thereby maintaining their overall well-being.
