Abstract

A safety sign is a sign of equipment to provide protection for workers or visitors in the workplace. American National Standards Institute Z535 (ANSI Z535) is used as a basic guideline for installing safety signs in the workplace because it is more communicative by using global symbols to overcome language barriers. Occupational Safety Division of Manpower and Transmigration Departement, East Java Province (UPT Keselamatan Kerja Surabaya) is a workplace that has a risk of occupational accidents. The preliminary surveys in the area of the 3rd floor of the Division of Occupational Safety (UPT Keselamatan Kerja) Surabaya revealed that there were many sites with insufficient safety signboards. Many of the installed safety signs did not comply with ANZI Z535 standards. This study aimed to evaluate the installation of safety signs compared to the ANZI Z535 standard on the 3rd floor of UPT K2 Surabaya. This was an observational study examining the installation of safety signs. The data were obtained using the ANSI Z535 safety sign checklist. We found 2 out of 5 types of safety signs were in accordance with ANSI safety sign standards with a comparison percentage of more than 66%, such as the notice sign (67.85%) and safety condition sign (75%). Three other types of safety signs were in the unfavorable category with a percentage of less than 66%, such as danger sign (65.63%), warning sign (50%), and caution sign (46.88%). Some sites required additional safety signs, such as warning signs (at distillation site), caution signs (oven, stairs), notice signs (cylinder storage, elevator, chemical warehouse), and safety condition signs (stair, eyewash).

Abstract

The laundry process involves various complex hazards, including biological, ergonomic, physical, and chemical hazards, this can result in health problem. The Jember Plantation Hospital Clinic is the referral hospital with the highest number of patients in Jember Regency, based on the participant eligibility letter (SEP) of the Jember Regency Health Insurance (BPJS Kesehatan) in 2022. There have been cases of Covid-19 infection spreading among workers in the linen unit. Therefore, the implementation of effective personal protective equipment (PPE) management is an important component in OHS protection efforts. The purpose of this research is to examine the implementation of PPE management among laundry workers in the Linen and Housekeeping Units of the Jember Plantation Hospital Clinic Jember Regency using the legal basis of the Minister of Manpower Regulation No. 8 of 2010 concerning PPE. This study used a qualitative descriptive design. Data collection  through  observations,  interview and literature studies. The research results show that the implementation of PPE management has not been optimal. Inconsistencies were found in determining PPE standards and quality, and the availability of adequate storage facilities. Furthermore, PPE training has not been comprehensively implemented, and worker compliance with PPE use remains low. PPE supervision and inspections tend to focus on compliance, without fully addressing the condition and suitability of the PPE. Systematic and continuous strengthening of PPE management is needed to improve the safety and health of hospital laundry workers.

Abstract

Occupational noise exposure in industrial environments serves as a physical stressor contributing to non-auditory health disorders, including elevated blood pressure. This study aims to analyze the association between noise intensity and the use of Hearing Protection Devices (HPD) with blood pressure among cleaning workers in the turbine and boiler areas of PT PLN Nusantara Power UP Paiton. The research employed an analytical observational method with a cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 52 cleaning workers selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected by measuring noise intensity using a Sound Level Meter, assessing blood pressure before and after work shifts using a digital sphygmomanometer, and administering questionnaires regarding HPD usage. The results indicated that most noise intensity measurements in the work area exceeded the Threshold Limit Value (85 d.). Bivariate analysis using the Chi-square test showed a statistically significant association between noise intensity and systolic blood pressure (p = 0.008) and diastolic blood pressure (p = 0.016). In addition, HPD usage was also significantly associated with blood pressure (p = 0.015). This study concludes that high noise exposure and inconsistent HPD use are associated with increased blood pressure among workers. It is recommended that the company strengthen HPD compliance supervision and implement regular cardiovascular health monitoring.

Abstract

Background: Work stress can happen to any worker, including crane operators. Monotonous work might cause work stress. Work stress can arise when workers do the same job and do it repeatedly without any variation in their work. Objectives: This study aims to determine whether there is a correlation between work monotony with work stress on crane operators in Nilam and Jamrud Terminals of Tanjung Perak Harbor. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was conducted between February - March 2021. The subjects in this study were 58 crane operators obtained from calculating the Slovin formula. The DASS 42 questionnaires were used in this study and instruments in the Indonesian version were validated. SPSS version 21 was used for descriptive and bivariate analysis in the form of contingency coefficient analysis and Spearman correlation. Results: The results showed that the average age was 38 years old and the average tenure was 6 years. All of the crane operators are male. In this study, it was found that most of the crane operators considered their work monotonous (75,9%). Meanwhile, work stress experienced by crane operators is dominant on a normal scale (34,5%), but other crane operators experience work stress ranging from mild to very heavy. The results also show a correlation between work monotony (r=0.570; p-value=0.000) and work stress on crane operators. Conclusions: There are several causes of work stress. Work monotony might cause work stress. It is important for crane operators to have variation in their job and for company to arrange proper rest time so the crane operators will have enough time to rest after long work hours. In addition, the researcher also suggests to further research to be able to conduct similar research related to other factors that can cause work stress. Variables of work burnout and work variation can be variables that can be considered for further research to determine the relationship with work stress.
