Abstract

Previously, educators created a multiage classroom to address the growing age gap within a class and the unresolved issue of teacher shortage. However, some schools in specific countries currently use this system, which provides significant benefits and positive developments to their fall-behind students or classes. This study conducted peer tutoring to address speaking issues in the classroom and bridge the gap in students' basic English knowledge. Besides, it is eager to improve students' speaking skills in a multiage EFL classroom and enrich literature in non-formal education. This study used McNiff and Whitehead's (2006) theory cycle for classroom action research: observation, reflection, action, evaluation, and modification. Data were collected through tests and interviews, and then the questionnaire was added and analysed using the NVivo 12 Pro application. The finding revealed that peer tutoring improved the multiage students' speaking proficiency in their fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. In a non-academic setting, peer tutoring effectively boosted the students' self-confidence and collaboration and demonstrated grade-level skills or accelerated learning in the class.

Abstract

Humans will only accept, avoid, or prevent risks that are likely to occur. This results in a transfer of risk that is carried out by using marine insurance. The general average is a loss agreed by the parties to be shared and the responsibility will be shared between the parties. The Average Adjuster is an insurance loss assessor appointed by the insurance company to handle claims for general average events. Report results from the Average Adjuster become the basis for insurance companies in making claims submitted by the insured so that they have responsibility for the results of the report provided. Normative legal research using the statutory approach method, that if the Average Adjuster makes a mistake in the results of the report, one party can submit a re-survey to the insurance company or submit a return or increase in the value of the insurance claim so that an LoD is issued as a parameter of the upper limit test of the instrument used. given. Therefore, this study suggests the need for a new institution whose function is to supervise or audit with the aim of re-checking the validity of the results of the Average Adjuster hassle so as to strengthen the double checking function before the insurance company makes a final decision on the insured’s claim.

Abstract

Oral examinations in higher education context have been an under-explored genre in academic discourse since it is not easily accessible for public, rendering a complexity in understanding examiners’ expectations during the exam. Having adequate repertoire of the examiners’ questions among the students being assessed can lead to successful oral defense without exception among Master’s students. Hence, this research aims to explore the typical questions asked by the examiners during Master’s students’ thesis oral examination. Seventeen recorded oral examination videos involving four examiners in the Indonesian higher education context were collected with the consent from the participants involved in the videos. They were transcribed and analyzed using a thematic analysis approach to explore the types of examiners’ questions. The findings demonstrate that there were five main categories of questions typically posed by the examiners in order from the most frequently appeared to the least one: (1) questions clarifying specific points in the thesis report or presentation, (2) questions related to the linkage between research method and findings, (3) questions related to the review of literature, (4) general preliminary questions, and (5) questions regarding the process of recruiting or selecting research participants. Questions revealed in each category also represent a particular purpose during the examination process. The results can be used as a reference for graduate students in preparing their oral defense.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is essential in ESL/EFL teaching, yet many students in Indonesia face difficulties in comprehending English passages. This study aims to investigate the strategies used by English language teachers to address these challenges. The research problem focuses on identifying effective strategies to improve students' reading comprehension skills. A qualitative research method was used, involving semi-structured interviews with four high school English teachers in Indonesia who were purposively selected. Data were collected in January 2024 through interviews conducted at different times and locations. The data were analyzed thematically to identify recurring challenges and effective strategies. The findings revealed that teachers faced significant barriers, such as students' limited vocabulary and difficulties with long texts. To address these issues, teachers used strategies such as selecting passages based on students' interests, using skimming and scanning techniques to quickly identify key ideas and specific information, and using mind mapping to help students organize and understand complex information. In conclusion, the study highlighted the importance of adaptive teaching methods in overcoming reading comprehension challenges. The suggested strategies - interest-based texts, skimming, scanning and mind mapping - were found to be effective in improving students' reading skills. Further research is recommended to investigate the long-term effects of these strategies and to develop additional methods for improving reading comprehension.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore English teachers’ readiness to implement Merdeka curriculum which focused on three aspects of readiness: emotive-attitudinal, cognitive, and behavioral. It investigates whether teachers’ readiness in implementing Merdeka curriculum varies by age and gender. This study used quantitative research in the form of survey design. The samples of the study were 179 English teachers at senior and vocational high schools in Bangka Belitung Province, Indonesia. The data were collected from 68 items of the questionnaire, consisting of 26 items for emotive-attitudinal dimensions, 28 items for cognitive dimensions, and 14 items for behavioral dimensions. Descriptive statistics and MANOVA were computed and analyzed using Microsoft Excel and IBM SPSS 26.0. The findings of the study showed that all of the teachers shared a moderate level of readiness in implementing Merdeka curriculum. Teachers’ readiness in implementing Merdeka curriculum showed a statistically significant difference among different age groups of teachers. However, there was no significant difference between male and female teachers’ readiness. The findings of this study suggest that while English teachers in Bangka Belitung Province exhibit a moderate level of readiness for implementing Merdeka curriculum, their preparedness may require further support, particularly in specific dimensions of readiness. The significant differences in readiness across age groups indicate that younger and older teachers may have varying needs in terms of training and professional development.
