It employed a research and developmentdesign. In the first year, a learning continuum was developed, followed by the developmentof integrated assessment instruments based on the learning continuum. Instrumentstandardization was then conducted using 1-PL Item Response Theory and the QUESTprogram. The results of the first year were 30 standardized integrated assessmentinstrument sets, a guidebook for construction of the integrated assessment instruments forlanguage learning outcomes and the QUEST program guidebook. In the second year, theintegrated assessment instruments for language learning outcomes were disseminated inprovinces of Yogyakarta Special Territory, South Kalimantan, and West Nusa Tenggara.

Abstract

This study aims to gather data from public and private primary school parents located in the urban, suburban, and rural areas that would contribute to understanding parental roles regarding fully online learning for their children during COVID-19. We also discussed several parents’ self-identified issues on their ability to participate in their children’s fully online learning experiences. A qualitative study was employed as the methodological basis for eliciting 12 parents whose children in 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade attending conventional learning before school closure due to the pandemic. The semi-structured interview was conducted, and verbatim transcripts were analyzed using inductive and thematic analysis approaches. Four major themes were identified from parents’ role during home learning, including organizing and managing, mentoring and instructing, facilitating, and motivating children learning. Online learning relied on how active parents engage and maintain children’s interaction with learning content, teachers, and peers to familiarise their children with online educational settings successfully. However, personal issues arise, which can be stressful as teaching young learners virtually need special attention. Having significant responsibilities to their children learning, parents disclosed key issues and struggled, resulting in a rapid move from face-to-face to online instructions; learning value, learning efficiency, mental and physical health, accessibility.

Abstract

Reading is an essential skill to be mastered, especially by university students and it is the lecturers’ responsibility to train their students to develop their reading skill. In order to do so, lecturers will have to develop materials or choose materials from existing books to be used in the teaching learning process. The text difficulty must be appropriate to the students’ English proficiency level. This study was aimed at finding the students’ perceptions of the difficulty of the texts used in the reading class and the corresponding text readability. This study utilized the survey design and the content analysis involving 141 second semester students of the English Language Education Department of a state university. Questionnaires were used to get data on students’ perceptions of the text difficulty and the text readability was analysed with the help of https://readabilityformulas.com. The data on students’ perceptions were analysed using percentage while the data on the text readability were analysed using the readability test. The findings showed that there was a difference in the students’ perception of the difficulty of the text and the readability level as being calculated using different readability formulas.

Abstract

The primary aim of this paper is to investigate students’ difficulty in the implementation of genre-based approach to teach English skills. It focuses on approximation exercise. The author reported the result of the study in the form of qualitative data. The practice revealed that the students faced difficulty to start writing their ideas. In this point, the students who have quite good English proficiency felt easy in constructing the text without employing elementary sentences. It happens although their text construction is somehow not grammatically correct. On the other hand, for those who have low English proficiency, the incorporation of elementary sentences and final realization help them a lot in constructing the text effectively. In a nutshell, the students in high and low English proficiency have their own difficulty in putting their ideas in the form of a text. Teacher’s assistance is crucial in developing students’ skill independently. Finally, this pedagogical practice might become the teacher’s guidance in practicing genre-based approached in the classroom.

Abstract

This study is set out to (1) explore the accuracy of school-based English test items developed by English teachers and (2) compare the relationship between the content covered by teacher and the students’ success level. This research used the quantitative approach. The source of the data is all grade XI students’ answers to the English test for the second semester of 2016/2017 academic year, and their English teachers’ responses to the questionnaire. During this cross-sectional survey, 241 grade XI students and six English teachers were selected by using the total population sampling technique. To analyze the data, the IRT model was prioritized with BILOG MG 3.0, WINISTEPS 3.7. The findings of the study indicate that (1) the test is valid, (2) it is reliable, (3) majority of the items are moderately difficult, (4) more than a half of all items have power to discriminate the examinees, (5) some items show fully-effective distractors, and (6) the test gives much information at -.40 of theta which means that the test is difficult for the grade XI students. Moreover, there is a wide gap between the content covered and the level of success.

Abstract

In the twenty-first century life, the demand to become an intercultural speaker becomes very crucial. It is seen through the incremental important attention of having an intercultural communicative competence (ICC) which is seen as one of the main key competencies in global world-wide. This condition urges any teacher to master the ICC completely as to assist their students to become intercultural speakers in multicultural situations. However, this competence has not been noticed thoroughly by Indonesian EFL teachers since most of them are reluctant to develop their competence in term of integrating the elements of ICC into their teaching-learning process. Hence, this present article recommends a number of competencies related to ICC’s elements in which the Indonesian EFL teachers should have, namely, the linguistic, sociolinguistic, discourse, and intercultural competence which are considered able to aid the Indonesian EFL teachers in enhancing the students’ ICC.

Abstract

This research aims at finding out the influence of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS), vocabulary mastery and reading motivation on reading comprehension achievement among State SMP Students in Magelang Regency. This research was an ex post facto involving three independent variables; students’ HOTS (X1), vocabulary mastery (X2), and reading motivation (X3) and one dependent variable, students’ reading comprehension achievement (Y). The sampling technique was the proportional cluster random sampling. The research instruments were three tests and a questionnaire. The kind of validity of the tests was the content validity by experts’ judgment. The construct validity of the questionnaire was measured by factor analysis. The reliability of the tests was measured by Cronbach’s Alpha with the Alpha of HOTS test is 0.768, vocabulary mastery test’s is 0.757 and the reading comprehension achievement test’s is 0.716. The reliability of the questionnaire was measured by Cronbach’s Alpha with the Alpha is 0.862. The data were analyzed using the multiple regression analysis continued by the partial correlation. The result of the multiple regressions indicates that HOTS, vocabulary mastery and reading motivation influence reading comprehension achievement with the F=236.709 with the significant level below 0.05 which means that the three independent variables influence significantly on reading comprehension achievement. The Adjusted R Square is 0.653 which means that the reading comprehension achievement is 65.3% predicted by the three independent variables. The contribution of HOTS on reading comprehension achievement is 38.7%, vocabulary mastery is 50.3%, and reading motivation is 8.2%.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the effect of the teachers’ teaching skills and school organizational culture on the students’ learning achievement in English. The research was ex-post facto quantitative. The population comprised all Year VIII students of six SMPN’s in the District of Sintang. A sample of 260 students from six schools based on Krejcie and Morgan formula  was established using the cluster sampling technique. The data were collected through Likert-scale questionnaires. The validity of the instrument was assessed in terms of content validity. The data were analyzed using the multiple linier regression analysis with two independent variables, anova test, and test of multiple linier regression analysis prerequisites (test of multicolinearity, heteroscedasticity, normality, and linierity). The results of the regression testing on the variable of teachers’ teaching skills show the coefficient β = 0.030, p 0.0001 (significant). The variable of school organizational culture shows the coefficient β = 0.014, p 0.0001 (significant). The effect of these two variables together showsR² = 0.155, Ftest = 23.593, p 0.0001 (significant). It is concluded that both teachers’ teaching skills and school organizational culture collectively have a significant effect on the English learning achievement. Keywords: teachers’ teaching skills, school organizational culture, English learning achievement
