Abstract

Advancements in technology have significantly impacted literacy instruction, particularly in improving reading comprehension. Despite the growing number of digital reading platforms, many learners, including students in educational settings, continue to struggle with deep comprehension. The READABLE app, a digital reading platform that offers simplified English stories, was developed to address these challenges. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of the READABLE app in enhancing pre-service teachers' ability to support reading comprehension. Data were collected through questionnaires, observations, and semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis revealed that pre-service teachers held highly positive perceptions of the READABLE app. Features such as interactivity, personalized materials, and automatic feedback were considered effective in increasing student engagement and learning outcomes. The app was also viewed as helpful for supporting students' understanding of texts by offering content tailored to their reading levels. Its engaging learning environment motivated students to read regularly, contributing to gradual and sustainable skill development. As such, the READABLE app is regarded as a valuable tool in supporting English language learning, especially for improving overall reading comprehension

Abstract

Kuala Indah Village in Sei Suka, Batubara, North Sumatra, is a coastal village whose economy relies on fisheries and aquaculture. The community is predominantly Muslim and also practices small-scale agriculture and animal husbandry. The Community Service Program (KKN) provides a platform for students to apply academic theory in real-world contexts, while also encouraging active community involvement. KKN students implement various programs, such as stunting prevention, religious moderation, skills training for poverty alleviation, and education for children and adolescents. They also play a role in increasing community participation through cultural activities and supporting local businesses by strengthening digital visibility. These initiatives support the creation of inclusive villages, providing equal access and opportunities regardless of gender, religion, or socioeconomic status. This collaborative approach reinforces the value of mutual cooperation and enriches social and educational life in the village. Through KKN, universities demonstrate their tangible contribution to village development. The success of this program underscores the importance of social inclusion and collective work in promoting sustainable development in rural areas like Kuala Indah.

Abstract

This community service activity was carried out in Kuala Indah Village with the aim of improving the skills and economic independence of the community through creative entrepreneurship training in the form of making liquid dish soap. This program was motivated by the socio-economic conditions of the village community, the majority of whom work In the informal sector with uncertain incomes, so that alternative businesses that are easy to do and have economic value are needed. The implementation method of the activity consisted of three stages: socialization, provision of materials, and direct practice of soap making. The results of the activity showed that the community was very enthusiastic in participating in the training and was able to practice the soap making process independently, from mixing the ingredients to packaging the final product. Through this activity, the community gained new knowledge about the ingredients, functions, and benefits of dish soap, as well as opportunities for developing it as a household business. This training successfully improved the skills, motivation, and entrepreneurial spirit of the Kuala Indah Village community, while also opening up opportunities for the formation of independent small businesses that have the potential to improve the family economy

Abstract

This study investigates lexical density in English and Indonesian academic prose using a qualitative contrastive approach. Drawing on authentic journal articles from comparable academic fields, the analysis focuses on how each language organizes and packages meaning in academic writing. The findings reveal that English academic prose tends to achieve high lexical density through nominalization and complex noun phrases, allowing writers to compress information and advance arguments in an abstract and cumulative manner. Indonesian academic prose, by contrast, often develops meaning through verbal clauses and explicit relational markers, resulting in a more elaborative and linear style. These differences reflect distinct discourse preferences rather than differences in academic quality. The study explains how such contrasts contribute to difficulties experienced by Indonesian writers when producing English academic texts. It also highlights the importance of contrastive awareness in academic writing instruction and evaluation

Abstract

Abstract

Abbreviation is a common linguistic strategy used to achieve efficiency and clarity in modern communication. This study examines the abbreviation systems of English and Indonesian through a contrastive linguistic approach, focusing on morphological patterns, phonological constraints, and usage conventions. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, the data were collected from established linguistic references and analyzed using classical contrastive analysis principles. The findings reveal that English abbreviation formation is structurally flexible, allowing both pronounceable acronyms and non-pronounceable initialisms, often maintaining complex consonant clusters and orthographic capitalization. In contrast, Indonesian abbreviation formation is strongly influenced by phonological preferences, particularly ease of pronunciation and conformity to open syllable structures, resulting in forms that closely resemble ordinary lexical items. These structural differences suggest potential sources of negative transfer for language learners and challenges in translation practices. The study concludes that abbreviation systems are shaped not only by linguistic rules but also by sociocultural and communicative needs. Understanding these contrasts is essential for language teaching, translation, and further comparative linguistic research.

Abstract

Contrastive analysis and error analysis in understanding the challenges faced by Indonesian students in learning English. Using a qualitative approach, this study analyzes data on errors made by students in the use of tenses , vocabulary, and pronunciation, which are influenced by interference from Indonesian. Data were collected through English tests and interviews with students, then analyzed using the contrastive and error analysis framework. The results show that the main difficulties faced by students lie in the differences in tense structures , errors in vocabulary selection, and pronunciation difficulties influenced by the phonetic habits of Indonesian. This study suggests that English teaching needs to focus more on the structural differences between the two languages and provide intensive practice to correct frequent errors..

Abstract

study explores grammatical errors found in descriptive essays written by five English major students at a university in Medan using a qualitative approach. The students produced texts freely, and their writing was analyzed to identify recurring error patterns and the factors that triggered them. Results show that the most common errors relate to verb agreement, tense use, sentence structure, and linking words, mostly influenced by Indonesian language interference and limited exposure to English writing. These mistakes also reflect low self-monitoring habits during the writing process. Rather than indicating failure, errors demonstrate developmental progress and the learners’ attempt to construct meaning in a second language. The study suggests contextual grammar teaching supported by writing practice, authentic input, and constructive feedback. With consistent guidance, students are expected to gradually build grammatical accuracy in academic writing.
