Abstract

Abstract

This article is intended to understand the phenomena of women writers in Indonesian literature within the period of year 2000. Their works of literature emerge among the works of art dominated by male writers. Seeing through thefeminism point of view, those women writers strive their position by attempting to deconstruct the patriarch system. By producing their works, they seek their identity through the literary writing and literary critics. Their existence in Indonesian literaryworks in 2000s becomes the pioneer of women’s rebelious action against the patriarch system in Indonesian literary history. Through their works which have got some awards from Dewan Kesenian Jakarta or Khatulistiwa Awards, theircapability in writing is recognized. However, their skill in producing works of art does not necessarily get positive respond from both the society and the literary critics. There are many prickly critics which try to marginalize their works.

Abstract

Drupadi is one of the female characters who have important roles and positions in the epic Mahabharata or wayang purwa in Java. In the Indian version Drupadi married five Pandavas. However, in the Javanese version she was only married to Yudhisthira. This paper discuss Drupadi Perempuan Poliandris novel as one of the works which is the reception and transformation of Mahabharata version of India and Java, as a form of reception and transformation of Mahabharata version of India and Java, its existence is considered as a form of revitalization of the classic literary works, especially the character Drupadi using the perspective of feminist literary criticism. The results show that the Drupadi character depicted in the novel tends to return the identity of Drupadi in the Mahabharata of India as the wife of Pandawas after they won the competition held by King Drupada. This is in contrast to Drupadi in the Javanese wayang story depicting Drupadi as the wife Yudhisthira as the oldest Pandawa. In this  novel Drupadi figure is also described as a woman who not only has perfect beauty, but also very critical of her destiny that must be lived.

Abstract

The view that the patriarchic system has dominated human life is untrue. Evidence has been found that, in the history of human civilization, women have been raised to the royal throne and ruled a kingdom. The existence of a queen has also been found in folklore in Indonesia. Using the qualitative research design with the perspectives of feminist literary criticism, the present study analyzes four folklore titles with a queen as the main character, such as: (1) The Legend of the Hermitage of Queen Kalinyamat, (2) Queen Kencanawungu, (3) Madam Undang Beautiful Queen from Kupang Island, and (4) The Legend of Princess Rengganis. Findings show no gender bias in the transfer of the royal inheritance or in choosing the successor of the royal throne in some kingdoms of regions in Indonesia. The crowning of a new ruler is more based on kinship and leadership qualities. This research also shows that before the emergence and development of feminism in the West, it has been existed in the archipelago, which can be called Indonesian feminism, i.e, feminism that gave women rights and voices not only in the domestic sphere but also in the public sphere, as a queen whose power was recognized.

Abstract

Up to the present time, the public is more familiar with the figures of Kartini, Dewi Sartika, and Cut Nyak Dien as icons of Indonesian women emancipation fighters. In reality, for hundreds of years before Kartini was born, in the 7th century, the Kingdom of Kalingga has been led by a woman, Queen Shima. Not much of the historical data has recorded her name and roles. In the midst of this condition, there were published two novels which enumerate the way of life of Queen Shima, entitled Putri Kalingga (Wibidharma, 2022) and Avatar Keadilan: Pesona Kebajikan Maharatu Shima dari Negeri Kalingga (Nararosa, 2010). The present study is aimed at understanding the existence of Queen Shima as a pioneer of Nusantara feminism by using the perspectives of feminist literary approach. The study was qualitative feminist research. The data sources of the study were the two novels Putri Kalingga and Avatar Keadilan: Pesona Kebajikan Maharatu Shima dari Negeri Kalingga. Data were the narratives that tell about the characteristics and way of life of Queen Shima as King of Kalingga Kingdom which contain information about her position and roles in Nusantara women history. Findings of the study show that Queen Shima, whose life story is told in the two novels Putri Kalingga and Avatar Keadilan is not only a fictitious character, but also a historical figure from the 7th century, who is hauled up as King of Kalingga Kingdom not because of inheriting the crown from her parents, but because of the intelligence, wisdom, and leardership capacities she has. In the perspectives of feminist literary criticism, Queen Shima represents Nusantara feminisim that has been practiced in the era of the Kalingga kingdom.
