Abstract

Abstract

Up to the present time, the public is more familiar with the figures of Kartini, Dewi Sartika, and Cut Nyak Dien as icons of Indonesian women emancipation fighters. In reality, for hundreds of years before Kartini was born, in the 7th century, the Kingdom of Kalingga has been led by a woman, Queen Shima. Not much of the historical data has recorded her name and roles. In the midst of this condition, there were published two novels which enumerate the way of life of Queen Shima, entitled Putri Kalingga (Wibidharma, 2022) and Avatar Keadilan: Pesona Kebajikan Maharatu Shima dari Negeri Kalingga (Nararosa, 2010). The present study is aimed at understanding the existence of Queen Shima as a pioneer of Nusantara feminism by using the perspectives of feminist literary approach. The study was qualitative feminist research. The data sources of the study were the two novels Putri Kalingga and Avatar Keadilan: Pesona Kebajikan Maharatu Shima dari Negeri Kalingga. Data were the narratives that tell about the characteristics and way of life of Queen Shima as King of Kalingga Kingdom which contain information about her position and roles in Nusantara women history. Findings of the study show that Queen Shima, whose life story is told in the two novels Putri Kalingga and Avatar Keadilan is not only a fictitious character, but also a historical figure from the 7th century, who is hauled up as King of Kalingga Kingdom not because of inheriting the crown from her parents, but because of the intelligence, wisdom, and leardership capacities she has. In the perspectives of feminist literary criticism, Queen Shima represents Nusantara feminisim that has been practiced in the era of the Kalingga kingdom.

Abstract

Inequality in access to information and the representation of women in the media further reinforces their marginalization in environmental issues. Visual representation in film can serve as a tool for social critique as well as an important medium for voicing the roles and struggles of women who have long been marginalized. This study aims to analyze the representation of gender injustice and environmental degradation in the documentary Sexy Killers through an ecofeminist approach. Using a qualitative content analysis method, the research explores the narrative visual, and symbolic elements in the film to identify the relationship between women, nature, and patriarchal-capitalist power. Sexy Killers was chosen as the object of study because it explicitly presents the impact of energy industry activities on local communities, particularly women living in areas affected by coal mining and power plant development. The results show that women are the most affected by the exploitation of natural resources, in forms such as the loss of access to clean water and land, increased domestic workload, vulnerability to environmental health impacts, and marginalization from participation and decision-making spaces. The film also illustrates that women are not only victims but also play vital roles as agents of change and resistance. They emerge as community leaders in protests and public education efforts, demonstrating political and ecological capacities often overlooked in development discourse. These findings affirm that the ecofeminist approach provides a relevant and critical analytical framework for understanding the link between the domination of nature and the oppression of women. Moreover, this study emphasizes the importance of recognizing women’s roles in environmental issues and encourages their active involvement in sustainable and just development processes.

Abstract

Folklore is a form of literature that lives orally, namely literature that is spread in unwritten form, transmitted orally from generation to generation. The research aims to look further at how past societies formed and conveyed social values through folklore, especially in the folklore of Putri Seven. This folklore is analyzed using a historicism approach. In this research, we provide an overview of the traditional traditions that regulate the order of marriage and the importance of the role of parents in determining their child's mate, both male and female, illustrating how strong the relationship between customs is in the life of Malay society, as well as understanding the reasons for Ratu Cik Sima's proposal to the Prince. Empang Kuala for his youngest daughter, Putri Mayang Sari. The story of Putri Tujuh describes the conflict resulting from traditional marriage rules, namely approval of the proposal because it is traditional for the eldest daughter to get married first. This shows the important impact of tradition in influencing social practices and maintaining cultural identity. With the study of historicism in folklore, it makes a new contribution to literature.
