Abstract

Sand sieving in small to medium-scale construction projects is still widely done manually, resulting in inconsistent output, time inefficiency, and increased labor demand. This study aims to design and test a prototype of an automatic rotary-type sand sieving machine with a capacity of 20 kg/hour to improve operational effectiveness and efficiency. The machine features a rotating cylindrical drum driven by a 220V electric motor with a maximum power of 0.5 HP. The engineering design method was employed through an experimental approach involving needs analysis, conceptual design, fabrication, and performance testing. Key components include a 30 cm diameter, 70 cm long drum, two-stage pulley-belt transmission system, and an 8–10 mm mesh wire screen. Test results show that the machine operates stably at a 5° inclination with a drum speed of 87.5 RPM. Sieving 2 kg of mixed sand yielded 1.57 kg of fine sand in 40 seconds, achieving a sieving efficiency of 78.5%. The portable and modular design facilitates maintenance and is suitable for supporting sand processing activities in small and medium-scale construction sectors.

Abstract

PLA is a quite popular type of filament because this material is often used as a raw material for bioplastics which have the ability to decompose naturally. However, the price of PLA filament is also quite high, making it inaccessible to everyone, and there is a weakness in the characteristics of polylactic acid, namely its hydrophobic nature. Cassava peel starch as an alternative additive possesses a hydrophilic nature to cover the weakness of PLA's properties. However, an incorrect combination ratio of the two materials will worsen the structural strength of the PLA and cassava peel starch. The objective of this research is to analyze the tensile strength of polylactic acid material with cassava peel starch at ratios of (PLA) 60:40 (CPS), (PLA) 70:30 (CPS), and (PLA) 80:20 (CPS) on an extruder machine. This research uses a quantitative approach experimental method. The specimen preparation was carried out by first mixing the two materials according to the determined ratio, and then processing them in an extruder machine at a temperature of 160°C. The resulting specimens were tested following the ASTM D2256 standard. The research results show that the (PLA) 80:20 (CPS) ratio has the highest average tensile strength of 44.43 MPa with a tensile strain of 0,0241. Thus, the lower the starch ratio, the better the increase in the obtained tensile strength

Abstract

One of the key elements in making high-quality sponge cake batter is consistent and precise mixing, ensuring all ingredients are well-blended and producing the air bubbles necessary for softness. The aim of this machine redesign was to overcome the limitations of the previous design by using a multi-stage pulley. By redesigning the machine, it can be tailored to more specific operational needs, improve product quality, and minimize wasted time. To achieve this goal, the sponge cake mixer, which previously used a fixed-size pulley system, was updated to be more efficient in regulating rotation speed. Therefore, research was conducted by replacing the pulley size variations with a 5-inch diameter with 840 rpm, 6 inches with 700 rpm, and 7 inches with 600 rpm. During the testing process, the dough was mixed and the time required until the dough was ready was recorded.Based on the results of the trial using a multi-level pulley, it was found that the average time for mixing sponge cake batter with a 5-inch pulley produced an average time of 37 minutes, while a 6-inch pulley produced an average time of 46 minutes, and for a 7-inch pulley produced an average time of 55 minutes. A 5-inch diameter pulley is the appropriate size for use in a redesigned sponge cake batter mixer machine because it produces the fastest mixing time, which is an average of 37 minutes, with a rotation speed of 840 rpm. This pulley size is able to increase the efficiency of production time without reducing the quality of the dough mixing results

Abstract

Waste management issues have become a national concern with serious impacts on social, economic, health, and environmental aspects. The low level of awareness among communities and industrial actors in managing waste has contributed to environmental pollution. Along with the development of cities and regions, the volume of waste including used lubricating oil from vehicles and motorized machinery continues to increase. Not only in large cities, but small workshops in rural areas also generate used oil waste, resulting in its widespread distribution across Indonesia. This study employed a field experimental method. The approach was conducted by testing fuel mixture compositions in a stove fueled by used oil to observe the effect of fuel composition on the combustion process. The results indicate that variations in fuel composition significantly affect combustion quality. In the mixture of used oil and kerosene, a ratio of 40:60 produced the highest flame temperature of 378°C, the fastest cooking time of 4.05 minutes, and a blue flame indicating more optimal combustion. In contrast, the 60:40 mixture resulted in the lowest temperature of 318°C, the longest cooking time of 5.07 minutes, and a predominantly orange flame. For the mixture of used oil and biodiesel (biosolar), the 40:60 ratio also demonstrated the best performance, achieving the highest flame temperature of 380°C, the fastest cooking time of 3.52 minutes, and a stable blue flame.
