Abstract

Abstract

The implementation of the sustainable development paradigm requires the collaboration of various parties. This is not easy to achieve due to the conflict of interest and dominance of certain aspects. This study explores the concept of holistic sustainability within traditional communities in the context of water resource conservation, using the cultural landscape of the Sumberawan Site in Malang as a case study. The research contributes to the development of local-traditional knowledge, which has proven effective in supporting sustainable development initiatives. The methodology employs Claude Lévi-Strauss’s structuralism to interpret the conceptual meaning embedded in the cultural landscape of Sumberawan Temple. Syntagmatic analysis is used to examine the sequential elements within each ‘myth,’ while paradigmatic analysis investigates the relationships between interchangeable ‘myths.’ Pattern identification is conducted through a binary opposition model. The study finds that the preservation of the Sumberawan water source is rooted in the strengthening of spiritual beliefs and the holistic integration of social and environmental elements. The message of conservation is transmitted across generations through myths, folklore, cultural rituals, artifacts, and spatial arrangements.

Abstract

This study investigates the persistence of cultural meaning in the traditional architecture of Sa’o Nggua within the Nggela settlement of the Lio ethnic group in Flores, Indonesia. Through a structuralist and ethnographic approach, the research analyzes spatial patterns, architectural typologies, and ritual calendars at both macro (village) and micro (house-cluster) scales. Findings reveal that the settlement exhibits a sectoral-concentric spatial configuration aligned with cosmological beliefs, where sacred–profane binaries structure both space and function. Despite modern pressures and environmental disruptions, architectural forms remain consistent—particularly the tripartite interior and symbolic roof—due to ritual obligations and local material abundance. Twelve annual rites form an eco-ritual feedback loop, ensuring house maintenance and agricultural productivity. The coexistence of Catholic worship and ancestral practices demonstrates a layered cultural resilience. Limitations include a lack of spatial quantification and gendered labor metrics. Future research should explore UAV-based mapping, longitudinal ethnography, and climate-adaptive potentials of indigenous construction techniques. Overall, Sa’o Nggua functions not merely as a shelter but as a living symbol of cultural continuity, ecological adaptation, and social cohesion in the face of change. This underscores the relevance of vernacular architecture as a model for sustainable and resilient built environments.

Abstract

Job satisfaction is important for workers, which can encourage them to work better. The factor that influences worker satisfaction is leadership because it can create good working relationships so that it will have an impact on performance. This study aims to analyze worker satisfaction with the foreman's leadership style in building construction work and determine what attributes need to be maintained and improved to achieve a good level of satisfaction for building construction workers. The method for analyzing worker satisfaction uses Importance Performance Analysis (IPA IPA) to determine worker satisfaction by measuring the importance and implementation level. The results showed that the respondent's conformity level was 87%, meaning the workers were satisfied with the foreman's leadership. The attributes that must be maintained to increase worker satisfaction are: (1) leaders always have good relations outside the work environment, (2) leaders are always careful in accepting and hiring workers, and (3) being consistent in what is said with what is done. The attributes that must be prioritized to increase worker satisfaction are (1) leaders always serve workers well in the work environment, (2) leaders can control themselves if there are problems and encourage positive development, (3) be consistent in what is said with what is done and (4) always paying attention to the gains and losses in work.

Abstract

Religious activities are basic things that are indispensable in life and are primary needs that must be met. Religious plurality is a social reality in life; it is a challenge to create religious harmony, but on the other hand, it is prone to conflict. The study aims to map religious activities in the settlement of religious plurality, namely Islam, Christianity, and Hinduism, in Balun village, Lamongan. It applied an environment behavior study approach with a place-centered mapping method to find individuals or groups using and accommodating their behavior in a certain time and space, with aspects studied, namely religious activities, space, and time. Data were obtained from direct observation and interviews with purposive, systematic samples. The results showed that religious activities at home with religious plurality were mapped into two categories: the religious activities of individuals or groups according to their religion; and the religious activities by inviting citizens to their religion and different religions. Mapping of space use showed that the use of semi-public and public space in the home for religious activities result in flexibility in spatial functions and changes in sacred-profane spatial boundaries. The research contributed to the theoretical development of using shared space in the home and creating a space of tolerance in Balun village's religious life. Kegiatan keagamaan merupakan hal mendasar yang sangat diperlukan dalam kehidupan dan menjadi kebutuhan primer yang harus dipenuhi.
