Abstract

Excessive consumption of salt and caffeine during pregnancy can lead to complications such as hypertension, preeclampsia, impaired fetal development, and miscarriage. However, awareness among pregnant women regarding these risks remains low, particularly in regions with limited health literacy such as Batubara Regency. This community service project aimed to enhance pregnant women's understanding of safe salt and caffeine intake through a community-based educational approach at Posyandu Tenggiri. The methods included interactive counseling, group discussions, and pre- and post-test evaluations. The results showed a significant increase in participants’ knowledge, from a pre-test average score of 48.87 to 74.20 in the post-test. Additionally, the activity sparked the emergence of a local change agent and greater family involvement in dietary decisions during pregnancy. This program demonstrated that simple and participatory education can foster social transformation and healthier consumption behavior.

Abstract

Background: Anemia during pregnancy remains a significant public health concern in Indonesia, with a high prevalence and adverse outcomes for both mothers and infants. Iron supplementation and maternal nutritional status are key factors in preventing anemia. This study aimed to examine the association between compliance with iron tablet consumption and nutritional status (chronic energy deficiency) with the incidence of anemia among pregnant women. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at Putri Ayu Health Center, Jambi City, involving 100 pregnant women selected using accidental sampling. Data on hemoglobin levels, upper arm circumference (MUAC), and iron tablet intake were collected through interviews and direct measurement. Anemia was defined as Hb <11 g/dL. Nutritional status was categorized based on MUAC <23.5 cm as chronic energy deficiency (CED). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and bivariate (Chi-square) analysis. Results: While statistical associations between CED and iron tablet compliance with anemia were not significant, higher proportions of anemia were observed among women with CED and those who consumed fewer than 30 tablets. Additionally, descriptive trends showed that women who began supplementation early in pregnancy—particularly in the first trimester—were less likely to develop anemia compared to those who initiated later. Conclusions: Although not statistically significant, the findings suggest that poor nutritional status and low adherence to iron tablet supplementation may increase the likelihood of anemia in pregnancy. Early and consistent supplementation, particularly from the first trimester, should be emphasized in antenatal care programs to prevent iron deficiency-related complications.

Abstract

Background: Adolescent girls are vulnerable to anemia due to increased iron needs during menstruation and often inadequate dietary intake. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between compliance with Iron Tablet (TTD) consumption and macronutrient intake with the incidence of anemia in female students. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at SMAN 2 Kota Jambi with 24 randomly selected female students. Data were collected through a compliance questionnaire, 3x24-hour food recall, and hemoglobin level measurement. Chi-square test was used for analysis. Results: A total of 62.5% respondents were non-compliant with TTD consumption. Macronutrient intake was generally poor: 95.8% lacked energy intake, 79.2% lacked carbohydrates, 66.7% lacked protein, and 87.5% lacked fat. Anemia prevalence was 45.8%. No significant relationship was found between TTD compliance and anemia (p=0.916). However, fat intake was significantly associated with anemia incidence (p<0.05). Conclusion: Anemia in adolescent girls is not significantly associated with iron tablet compliance but is related to fat intake. Interventions should target improving diet quality and fat adequacy alongside supplementation.

Abstract

School-aged children tend to prefer foods high in sugar, whether when choosing snacks at school or while shopping with their families. Attractive packaging and bright colors often draw children in, making them perceive such foods as tasty. However, excessive and long-term consumption of sugary foods can increase the risk of diabetes mellitus, a condition that is becoming more prevalent among children. Therefore, to mitigate this risk, it is important to provide education on selecting healthy snacks for school-aged children. This education aims to change children's behavior in choosing healthier snacks, which not only affects their health but also ensures they meet their nutritional needs optimally. This educational activity was held on October 11, 2024, at UPT SDN 060881, targeting 50 students. The program began with an explanation of how to choose healthy snacks and the impact of diabetes mellitus on children. The education session lasted for 60 minutes, followed by a question-and-answer session where five students actively asked questions and shared their experiences in choosing snacks in their daily lives.

Abstract

Background: Anemia remains a major public health problem affecting adolescents worldwide, particularly girls who are vulnerable due to rapid growth and menstrual blood loss. In Indonesia, the prevalence of anemia remains high (25–40%), driven by poor dietary habits, low adherence to iron supplementation, and overall nutritional status. While Body Mass Index (BMI)-for-age is a recognized determinant of anemia risk, local evidence, particularly from Jambi City, remains scarce. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 30 female students aged 15–18 years. The data utilized were collected during a Community Service Program (PKM). BMI for age z-scores were calculated using the WHO 2007 Growth Reference. Hemoglobin levels were measured using a portable hemoglobinometer (HemoCue Hb 301). The relationship between BMI-for-age categories (underweight, normal, overweight) and anemia status was analyzed using the Chi-square test. Results: The overall anemia prevalence was 40%. Based on BMI for age, participants were categorized as underweight (n=8), normal (n=18), and overweight (n=4). Anemia prevalence varied significantly across categories: underweight (75.0%) showed the highest rate, followed by normal (33.3%), and overweight (25.0%). Statistical analysis revealed a significant association between BMI-for-age and anemia (p = 0.041). Conclusions: Anemia was present across all BMI categories, with the highest prevalence among underweight adolescents. These findings indicate that nutritional status strongly influences anemia risk and should be prioritized in adolescent health programs. Integrating school-based strategies such as routine growth and hemoglobin monitoring, iron–folic acid supplementation, and engaging nutrition education.
