Abstract

Landslides can cause soil and land quality degradation. Soil originating from landslide sites has less stable aggregates because it is nutrient-poor. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of hydroseeding media materials on soil stability after landslides. This study was conducted in two landslide areas in Pujon District, Malang Regency (112.417958 E, 7.867472 S) and toll road KM 78 Purwodadi, Pasuruhan Regency (112.726777 E, 7.804978 S), East Java. Soil analysis was carried out with parameters including soil physical characteristics data (bulk density, specific gravity, water content, porosity, texture and permeability) and soil chemical characteristics (organic matter, organic C, N, P, K, pH, CEC, exchangeable K, Na, Ca, Mg, total N and C/N ratio). The application of hydroseeding media was carried out with a combination of the following media: mulch (M), blotong (B), and fertilizer (cow manure; F). The results showed that the two-material formula generally had soil aggregates that were more resistant to water droplets. Soil aggregates with the MB formula treatment had the best aggregate stability compared to ten hydroseeding formulas with other material combinations.

Abstract

Purwodadi Botanic Garden is one of the botanic gardens in Indonesia, located in Pasuruan, East Java. Purwodadi Botanic Garden (PBG) is an ex-situ plant conservation area that serves five main functions: conservation, research, education, ecotourism, and environmental services. Purwodadi Botanic Garden features a living collection of plants, primarily terrestrial, but also includes aquatic species. Therefore, this study aims to conduct water quality monitoring in aquatic plant ponds and present the experiments of phytoremediation on selected species of aquatic plants. This research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative methods. Data were obtained from direct observation of aquatic plants in the garden, monthly monitoring of water quality in 32 ponds, and the results of phytoremediation experiments from research activities spanning over ten years. Monitoring water quality using water-test kits is inexpensive, easy to use, and yields results quickly. Parameters measured for environmental quality are temperature, humidity, light intensity, pH, TDS, and water temperature. The results show that, out of 32 ponds in the garden, only 12 ponds were found to have aquatic plants. The water quality in ponds with aquatic plants is generally better than in those without aquatic plants, indicating that the aquatic plants in ponds act as phytoremediators in the effort to improve water quality. Purwodadi Botanic Garden contains 25 species of aquatic plants. However, during the observation of the pond, only 15 species of aquatic plants were present. The results of the experiments selected 10 species as phytoremediation agents for both organic and inorganic pollution. The 10 species are Acanthus ilicifolius, Actinoscirpus grossus, Ceratophyllum demersum, Coix lacryma-jobi, Echinodorus radicans, Lemna minor, Ludwigia octovalvis, Pistia stratiotes, Sagittaria lancifolia, and Salvinia molesta. Abstract

Ornamental plants are plants that are used as decoration. One of the ornamental plants is Aglaonema sp. known as Sri Rejeki. It is enjoyed as an ornamental plant in terms of leaf pattern. However, Aglaonema has harmful ectoparasites. The aim of this study was to determine and identify ectoparasites in Aglaonema plants using the Visual Encounter method, and to analyze the role and solutions for the presence of ectoparasites in Aglaonema. Research observations were carried out for approximately three weeks from April to May 2022. Six individuals Aglaonema were used as samples. Observation was done by using the visual encounter method which was carried out once a week in the morning, afternoon, and evening with a total of three time observations (15 minutes each) at each time. Measurement of abiotic factors includes temperature, humidity, and weather. The results were used to determine the important value index (IVI) and Shannon-Wiener Index (H’). All identified organisms were arthropods (insects). There were five identified families:  Pseudococcidae, Coccidae, Formicidae, Chironomidae, and Muscidae. Pseudococcidae and Coccidae were the insect families that are confirmed as ectoparasites for plants. The solution for prevention or termination of ectoparasite is by replacing the invaded plant away from healthy plants, removing the infected parts of plant, and/or placing refugia plant for habitat of ectoparasite’s natural enemies.

Abstract

Fruit flies remain a persistent threat to horticultural production, especially in tropical regions where seasonal shifts can significantly affect their population dynamics. This study investigated the species composition, diversity, and environmental drivers of fruit fly populations infesting Capsicum annuum and Solanum lycopersicum over a one-year period in Batu City, Indonesia. Using weekly sampling across four seasonal phases—dry-to-rainy transition, rainy season, rainy-to-dry transition, and dry season—fruit fly specimens were collected, reared, and identified. Environmental variables, including temperature, humidity, rainfall, light intensity, and pesticide application frequency, were monitored and analyzed in relation to fruit fly abundance using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and multiple linear regression. A total of four species were recorded: Bactrocera carambolae, Bactrocera dorsalis, Atherigona sp, and Silba sp, with the latter representing a new regional record for East Java. Population peaks occurred during the rainy season and its transitional periods, while significant declines were observed during the dry months. Regression models revealed that temperature and humidity supported population growth, whereas pesticide use had a consistently suppressive effect—particularly for B. dorsalis and Atherigona sp. However, the models explained only 20–50% of the variation, suggesting that additional ecological factors may be at play. These findings deepen our understanding of fruit fly ecology in tropical systems and highlight the importance of integrating climatic and agronomic data in pest management strategies. The discovery of Silba sp. further enriches current biogeographical knowledge and signals the need for adaptive, interdisciplinary approaches to sustainable pest control.

Abstract

Grasshopper is one type of insect known as a plant pest that quite affects agricultural production. Grasshoppers also have benefits as natural predators and maintain ecological balance. One area where no research has been carried out on grasshopper diversity is Dompu Regency, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. This research was conducted at 4 locations in Dompu, including corn, ex-corn, intercropping, and Doroncanga agricultural land, by making four transects at each location. Grasshoppers were collected using the insect net, and hand collecting was carried out at 07.00 and 16.00 WITA. The environmental factors that were calculated were air temperature, light intensity, wind speed, and air humidity, while the biotic factors observed were plant vegetation at each location and predators. Data analysis was performed using the Shannon-Wiener diversity index, evenness index, dominance index, and Margalef index. The results of this study indicate that Dompu Regency has the potential for diversity of grasshoppers with moderate criteria where the diversity of grasshoppers is strongly influenced by plant vegetation and human treatment on agricultural land.

Abstract

Mountainous regions frequently encounter difficulties in optimising communal spaces for tourism and local requirements due to the presence of topographical and cultural complexities. This study focused on Gubugklakah, East Java, a village renowned for its proximity to Mount Bromo, its rich agricultural heritage, and its Tenggerese cultural identity. The objective was to analyse spatial and activity patterns in communal spaces, addressing issues related to overcrowding, underutilisation, and accessibility, to propose strategies for sustainable tourism. A mixed-method approach was employed, combining spatial analysis using GIS tools, participatory observation of local and tourist activities, and structured community surveys. The analysis of spatial data enabled the mapping of the distribution and accessibility of communal spaces, while the qualitative insights derived from field observations illuminated the socio-cultural dynamics. The surveys collected data from residents and tourists regarding their perspectives on space utilisation and satisfaction. The findings indicated that communal spaces situated in proximity to major attractions, such as marketplaces and cultural sites, frequently experienced high levels of congestion, whereas peripheral areas remained underutilised. The activities of tourists were found to be centred around cultural festivals, agritourism, and recreational pursuits, whereas those of the local population were focused on economic and social interactions. The study identified three key challenges: inadequate infrastructure, limited funding, and the need to strike a balance between tourism development and environmental conservation. The study concluded that adaptive spatial planning, incorporating multifunctional designs and enhanced transportation links, can significantly improve the utility of communal spaces. It also recommended policies emphasising community-based management and sustainable practices to align development with cultural preservation and environmental sustainability. These findings provide actionable insights into optimising communal spaces to foster inclusive tourism growth and local economic resilience.

Abstract

This study focuses on the potential of yard plants as refugia plants that play an important role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem in residential areas. Yard plants not only function as aesthetic elements that beautify the environment, but also play an ecological role as providers of microhabitats for various organisms, including natural enemies of plant pests. In the context of applied ecology, the concept of refugia emphasizes the function of certain plants that can provide shelter, food sources, and reproductive areas for predators and parasitoids that play a role in biological control of pests. Therefore, the identification and analysis of the potential of yard plants as refugia are important to support the principle of sustainable environmental management in residential areas. This study aims to analyze the composition and structure of yard plant vegetation, identify the main types of arthropod visitors to dominant plants, and assess the ecological relationship between vegetation and the presence of arthropods. The research methods include vegetation surveys with direct censuses to determine the types and dominance of plants, and observations of arthropods using visual encounter techniques. Data were analyzed descriptively quantitatively to determine the structure of the vegetation community and the intensity of interactions between biotic components. The results showed that the most common types of yard plants were the Lily (Hymenocallis littoralis) and the Balinese Ornamental Pandanus (Dracaena draco), with the highest visitation rate among arthropods in the Formicidae family. These findings demonstrate the ecological potential of yard plants as supporting elements for the conservation of natural enemies of pests. This study emphasizes the importance of optimizing yard vegetation as refugia plants to support biological control systems and increase public awareness of the ecological function of plants in the residential environment.
