Abstract

Background: Oil palm shell is a waste of oil palm plants that can be used as a source of silica gel because it contains SiO2. This study aims to determine the oil palm shell silica gel can be used as an active ingredient in the manufacture of body scrubs. Method: This study uses active ingredients with various concentrations of 2,5%, 5%, and 10%. The process of making silica gel starts with ashing, washing, making a sodium silicate solution, and adding NaOH. The preparation test includes an organoleptic test, homogeneity test, pH test, dispersibility test, adhesion test, irritation test, dead skin cell removal test, and stability test. Results: From the results of this study, the SiO2 content of palm oil shell silica gel is as much as 43% with XRF testing, and XRD results at an angle of 2ϴ=22,93º. The FTIR results showed the presence of a Si-OH group at a wave number of 3439.08 cm -1, a Si-O-Si group at a wave number of 1020,34 cm -1, and a -OH group at a wave number of 806,25 cm -1. The preparations that have been made meet the physical evaluation of the preparations, namely in the form of semi-solid, white color, and smells of oleum citri. Each homogeneous preparation, pH with a value ranging from 4,7 to 6,5, does not irritate the skin, meets the requirements of the spreadability test and adhesion test, has poor stability because the pH value has increased and decreased, has a good keratin content value, and the stability test of the formula against temperature at pH showed significant results (p>0.05). Conclusion: This research concludes that palm oil shell silica gel can be formulated as an active ingredient in making body scrubs and has the effect of removing dead skin cells on the skin.

Abstract

Kata kunci : Vitamin C, Kulit jeruk manis, Spektrofotometri UV-Visible, Metoda oksidasi, Ekstraksi Abstract The sweet orange peel is often thrown away as waste even though it contains vitamin C which has antioxidant activity. This study aims to determine levels of vitamin C in sweet orange peel extract using UV-Vis spectrophotometry in the oxidation method with bromine, oxidation method with KMnO4 and extraction method with polar solvents and compare the results of the three methods. This research was conducted by extracting sweet orange peel with 70% ethanol by maceration. Vitamin C levels were tested in three ways, namely the oxidation method with bromine and KMnO4 and direct levels of testing with polar solvents. The results showed that vitamin C levels in sweet orange peel extract obtained by the oxidation method with bromine, the oxidation method with KMnO4 and the extraction method with polar solvents were 0.4817 ± 0.0451%, 0.495 ± 0.1371%, 1.1350 ± 0.2301%. Vitamin C levels obtained in the oxidation method with bromine and the oxidation method with KMnO4 are not much different. Vitamin C levels in the extraction method with polar solvents are greater than the other two methods due to the effect of the content of other secondary metabolites in sweet orange peel. Keywords : Vitamin C, Sweet orange peel, UV-Vis spectrophotometry, Oxidation method, Extraction

Abstract

Coal-mining mud is one of the wastes that must be treated before being discharged into the environment. The mud contains a lot of heavy metals which have the potential to pollute the environment and endanger human health. On the other hand, the metal contents in the mud can be used as components to strengthen building materials such as brick. In this study, an investigation was carried out to check whether the risk of heavy metal contamination in the coal-mining mud can be minimized when the brick is produced. In addition, this study also tested whether the bricks produced from the utilization of the mud were strong enough to be used as construction materials. The results obtained indicate that metal contamination can be significantly minimized through the solidification process of brick products and is following the Indonesian national quality standards. This study also shows that even though the bricks meet the strength standard for the certain purpose applied in Indonesia, the utilization of coal-mining mud mixed with cement and sand was not sufficient to produce strong bricks even though the weight obtained was quite light.

Abstract

The background of this study is based on the phenomenon of low performance of honorary employees which is allegedly influenced by lack of compensation and unbalanced workload. This study aims to analyze the effect of compensation and workload on the performance of honorary employees with work motivation as an intervening variable in the Solok City Regional Secretariat. This study uses a quantitative method with a survey approach, where data is collected through the distribution of questionnaires to 103 honorary employees who are the research samples. The data analysis technique used is Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to test the relationship between the research variables. The results of the study indicate that compensation has a positive and significant effect on work motivation and employee performance. In contrast, workload shows a negative influence on work motivation but is not significant on employee performance. Additionally, work motivation is proven to be a significant intervening variable in mediating the effect of compensation on the performance of honorary employees. This study implies that increasing compensation can enhance employee motivation and performance, while excessive workload may decrease work motivation
