Abstract

Abstract

Background: Indonesia is a country that is highly susceptible to natural disasters, particularly due to the frequent volcanic eruptions occurring on the island of Java. This situation underscores the importance of ensuring that students in disaster-prone regions are well-prepared for such events. Traditional outreach methods have often been deemed insufficient in enhancing students' understanding of disaster preparedness. In response to this challenge, this research introduces an innovative educational tool: modified "Disaster Snakes and Ladders" game. This game aims to improve students' readiness for a specific focus on the potential eruptions of Mount Merapi. The study’s objective is to evaluate the effectiveness of the game in enhancing the understanding of disaster preparedness among students at Kepuharjo State Elementary School. Method: Employing a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test approach, the study selected fifty students through total sampling. Data collection involved administering questionnaires before and after game implementation. Analysis using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test revealed promising results: initial scores averaged 17.08, increasing to 17.92 post-test. Statistical significance was confirmed  p-value of 0.016, indicating a substantial improvement in students' disaster preparedness knowledge. Conclusion: the Disaster Snakes and Ladders game effectively enhances elementary students' awareness and understanding of disaster preparedness, specifically geared towards Mount Merapi-related disasters.

Abstract

Diplomacy in the protection of Indonesian citizens (WNI) requires serious attention related to the large number and complexity of protection that must be provided by the Indonesian government. This condition requires the Indonesian government to provide a number of superstructures as a legal basis for protection, as well as infrastructure as a means of implementing policies effectively. This article wants to evaluate the governance of the protection of Indonesian citizens within the framework of the “Duty of Care” (DoC) paradigm as a cosmopolitan idea in upholding human security outside the jurisdiction of a country. The data sources was taken from official documents from the Directorate of Protection of Indonesian Citizens, Permenlu No. 5 of 2018, the Strategic Plan for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens, as well as news in a number of mass media that informed the dynamics of problems and the protection of Indonesian citizens abroad. This article finds that Indonesia has adopted the structure of the Idea of DoC in the roadmap for the protection of Indonesian citizens, both in the Social Contract of Care, Intermediaries of Care, and the Extension of Care model although it is still artificial and not yet simultaneous. A policy breakthrough from the Indonesian government is needed to build a more substantive and progressive protection policy superstructure in the form of increasing the policy level from the Minister of Foreign Affairs Regulation to the Act and improving the quality and quantity of Indonesian citizen protection infrastructure so that the reach of protection will be wider, responsive and articulate in providing the best protection for Indonesian citizens abroad.

Abstract

Overweight and obesity among Indonesian adolescents have emerged as a pressing public health issue, reflecting global trends. This study examines the relationship between economic status and overweight prevalence among junior and senior high school students in Indonesia, using secondary data from the Global School-based Health Survey (GSHS). This study analyzed data from 9,977 students aged 11–18 years through a cross-sectional design and binary logistic regression, adjusting for dietary habits, physical activity, and sedentary behavior. Overall, 14.7% of students were overweight; the prevalence was notably higher among low-income students (27.4%) compared to high-income groups (14.2%). Students from lower economic backgrounds were 1.374 times more likely to be overweight (95% confidence Interval (CI): 1.011–1.867). Although many reported healthy behaviors, including regular fruit and vegetable consumption and participation in physical education, sedentary lifestyles and limited access to nutritious food remained significant challenges for low-income adolescents. These results highlight the complex interplay between economic status, health behaviors, and environmental factors, highlighting the need for targeted, equity-focused interventions to address disparities and curb obesity in Indonesia’s youth.
