Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the development process in transmigration areas, utilizing the social capital concept in the study of three transmigration villages: Mekar Jaya, Wapae, and Suka Damai. We interviewed stakeholders, made observations, and analysed documents to collect data. Our findings highlight the important role of social capital and institutional change in supporting village development. Three critical factors emerged: First, village development involves the transfer of skills from the area of origin to the area of migration endowed with strong work ethics (etos kerja), particularly in agricultural and business sectors. Second, strong networks formed through ethnic and religious ties facilitate information sharing and cooperation, aligning the interests of the community and the village govenrment. Third, institutional changes in village autonomy and regional expansion significantly influence the village development process, strengthening communities’ social capital while reshaping the state-society relationship to become more democratic. Despite some progress, the village transformation, however, has yet to have a significant impact on improving the community’s prosperity.

Abstract

This research examines Pasuruan City as a cultural heritage landscape shaped by colonial, Islamic, and multi-ethnic layers that continue to color the dynamics of its urban space. The research aims to identify how this heritage is interpreted and integrated into tourism development while uncovering the obstacles that arise in the preservation process and community participation. A qualitative method with an ethnographic approach was employed, utilizing participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and analysis of archives and policy documents. Research subjects included local residents, cultural actors, and local government representatives directly involved in heritage management. The data were analyzed using thematic interpretation to understand the interconnections between historical narratives, urban spatial patterns, and tourism practices. The findings indicate that Pasuruan displays a cultural palimpsest, where colonial buildings, religious sites, and multicultural areas intertwine to form a distinctive urban identity. However, the fragmentation of heritage asset ownership, weak management, and the absence of a connecting narrative between clusters remain major obstacles. In conclusion, a multi-stakeholder strategy is necessary, involving the government, communities, and cultural asset owners, to enable heritage to serve a dual function: as a pillar of collective memory and as a driver for sustainable tourism and the city's creative economy.

Abstract

Karanganyar Village, Poncokusumo District, Malang Regency, is an agricultural area with great potential in horticulture and plantations. However, the main challenge faced by this village is the lack of integration in the management of household waste and the agricultural sector. The lack of public awareness regarding waste separation and utilization further worsens the environmental situation. In addition, the economic potential of local UMKM has not been fully utilized due to a lack of innovation, marketing, and training. This study aims to implement a Global Citizenship Education (GCED) approach in village education to increase environmental awareness and entrepreneurial skills among the community. The methods applied are participatory through counseling, waste management training, and awareness campaigns based on global education. The findings show that the GCED method can increase community knowledge about waste management and encourage the formation of environment-based business groups. These activities also encourage participatory enthusiasm in maintaining cleanliness and supporting the circular economy in villages. In conclusion, the implementation of GCED in village education can be an effective method for sustainable waste management and strengthening the local economy.

Abstract

?Agricultural land degradation and land conversion increasingly threaten regional food security in Malang Regency, East Java. This study examined how biophysical vulnerability—particularly soil organic carbon decline in Inceptisol-dominated systems—interacted with land governance and agricultural productivity. This study adopted a qualitative case study approach, supported by secondary data on land use, soil characteristics, harvested area, and rice production, and complemented by document analysis of regional land protection regulations. Productivity was recalculated using official harvested area and production statistics, and long-term projections to 2035 were constructed under annual land conversion scenarios of 1% and 2%. The results suggest that merely designating land is not enough to ensure sustainable food production over the long term. To maintain the resilience of regional food systems, governance must effectively incorporate measurable efforts to restore soil quality and control land conversion.

Abstract

Abstract. Kedungrejo as a village located on the border of a city village, certainly has consequences for changes in the structure and local institutions of farmers. As a consequence, changes in land spatial planning and livelihoods will dominate, many industrializations, developer housing development, and land use change. The impact that occurs is the crisis of farmer youth, often crop failures due to the market, so that farmers will adapt according to the existing dynamics. This is what is of interest to researchers to analyze the value of the valuation of rural land spatial planning and farmers' survival strategies due to urban attractiveness. With ethno-ecological methods, this research will focus on land value, land benefits, and farmers' survival strategies. Based on the results of the study, it shows that the valuation value of agricultural commodities depends on the type of crops they grow. Namely spinach, kale, kenikir and basil. Each commodity has a different valuation value because it is in accordance with market opportunities, operational costs, and the area of farmers' land. Therefore, the form of active strategies for farmers is in the form of reducing seed operational costs and switching chemical fertilizers to natural fertilizers. Then consider the planting and harvesting time, as well as read market opportunities. The passive strategy of farmers tends to borrow money from middlemen and financial institutions, and reduces the role of workers in the planting phase. Meanwhile, another strategy is to take advantage of social ties between farmers, in the form of mutual cooperation, joint gathering, and maintaining farmer group activities in terms of assistance information, sharing, and water irrigation management.  Keywords: Valuation of Vegetable Farmers, Peripheral Areas, Active Strategies, Passive Strategies and Network Strategies.
