Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study investigates the effect of coconut fiber length on the mechanical performance of polyester-based composite materials intended as an alternative body material for small boats, addressing the growing demand for sustainable and locally sourced marine materials. Methodology: An experimental research design was employed using coconut fiber reinforcements with lengths of 10 mm, 30 mm, and 50 mm at a fixed fiber–resin ratio of 5%:95%. Composite specimens were fabricated using the hand lay-up method, reflecting practical production conditions commonly used in small-boat construction. Mechanical characterization was conducted using flexural strength testing in accordance with ASTM D790-02 and impact strength testing in accordance with ASTM E-23, using a Zwick Roell Z020 universal testing machine. Main Findings: The results demonstrate a clear positive correlation between fiber length and mechanical strength, with longer fibers providing more effective stress transfer and energy absorption within the composite matrix. The composite reinforced with 50 mm of coconut fiber exhibited the highest performance, achieving a flexural strength of 63.4 MPa and an impact strength of 45.42 kJ/m², both of which meet the mechanical requirements for small-boat materials set by the Indonesian Classification Bureau. Novelty/Originality of this study: Optimization of coconut fiber length for marine-grade polyester composites, offering empirical evidence that locally available natural fibers can meet regulatory standards for small vessel applications. This research advances eco-friendly composite technology and presents coconut fiber–reinforced polyester as a viable, sustainable alternative to conventional wood-based boat materials.

Abstract

Abstract

The application of information and communication technology in managing digital-based services has become a primary need. One of the rapidly growing sectors of technology use is mobile app-based food ordering services. ShopeeFood, one of the popular food ordering platforms in Indonesia, makes it easy for users to choose and order food from various restaurants on their smartphones. The problems currently faced are less intuitive interfaces, a less-than-optimal user experience, and unclear information, which have the potential to affect user satisfaction. This study aims to establish a relationship between the Usability (Learnability, Efficiency, Memorability, Errors, Satisfaction) construct X1 and the Design Thinking Method (Emphatize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test) construct X2 as independent variables and UI/UX (Strategy, Scope, Structure, Framework, Surface) construct Y as dependent variables. Using a quantitative approach, online questionnaires with 15 statements were distributed; 100 responses were obtained and analyzed using SmartPLS, including the Patch Coefficient Test, Validity Test, Reliability Test, and Inner Model. The results indicate that the independent variables, Usability (X1) and Design Thinking (X2), simultaneously have a strong influence on the dependent variable, the UI/UX construct (Y). The Usability and Design Thinking variables are highly recommended for creating UI/UX designs for the Shopeefood application.

Abstract

Wind energy is one of the most promising renewable energy sources to support the transition toward sustainable energy systems, making the selection of strong and environmentally friendly wind turbine blade materials essential. This study aims to assess the potential of natural fibers as composite reinforcement, with a particular focus on flexural performance. Three types of natural fibers were compared: ijuk fiber (Arenga pinnata), pineapple leaf fiber, and corn husk fiber. Composite specimens were produced using polyester resin as the matrix with a 5% fiber volume fraction (95:5 ratio), and all fibers were pretreated through two hours of alkaline immersion. Test samples were fabricated following ASTM D790 standards with dimensions of 150 × 12.5 × 3 mm and evaluated using a Zwick Roell Z020 universal testing machine at the Materials Laboratory of Politeknik Manufaktur Negeri Bangka Belitung. The results revealed that ijuk fiber–reinforced composites achieved the highest average flexural strength of 57.3 MPa, followed by PALF at 47.5 MPa, while corn husk fiber produced the lowest value at 29.33 MPa. One-way ANOVA confirmed significant differences among the three fiber groups (p < 0.05). Overall, ijuk fiber demonstrated the greatest potential as a sustainable and high-performing reinforcement material for composite applications.
