Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to examine the challenges faced by teachers in implementing the Montessori method to develop children's character in multicultural and inclusive classrooms. A qualitative approach with a case study design was conducted at Singaraja Montessori School in the Octopus class. Among the participants in this study were two teachers who teach in the Octopus class. Research data were collected through three methods: classroom observation, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. Then, they were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman analysis model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The research findings indicate three challenges. First, teachers face challenges in understanding the characteristics and needs of new students. Second, there are challenges in managing diverse classes. Third, teachers have limited experience in inclusive education. This study confirms that developing children's character in diverse classes requires continuous observation, flexible classroom management, and teacher readiness to respond to the diverse needs of students.

Abstract

This study investigates the violation of Grice’s conversational maxims in the movie “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe”. Grounded in Grice’s Cooperative Principle, this research focuses on identifying the types of maxim violations and explaining the communicative purposes behind their use in movie dialogues. A descriptive qualitative research design was employed, with data collected from selected utterances spoken by the main characters in the movie. The data were analyzed by classifying the violations into four types of maxims: quality, quantity, relation, and manner. These violations are used by the characters to convey implicit meanings, express emotions, and develop the storyline. The results of the study indicate that three types of maxim violations were identified: violations of the maxim of quality, the maxim of quantity, and the maxim of manner. Violations of the maxim of manner were the most prevalent. These violations serve to depict emotional conflict, conceal information, manipulate other characters, and advance the plot. These findings suggest that maxim violations in film dialogue are not merely a form of communication failure, but rather a communicative strategy that serves a specific pragmatic function.

Abstract

This study investigated the integration of multicultural values in inclusive education settings to promote peaceful values and attitudes within the educational environment. The research was conducted at Sekolah Bali Hati, an international bilingual school implementing inclusive and multicultural educational practices. The study employed a mixed-methods approach combining qualitative case study and quantitative survey designs. Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, field notes, and document analysis involving school principals, teachers, and students. Meanwhile, quantitative data were obtained through questionnaires distributed to teachers regarding their perspectives and experiences in integrating multiculturalism into inclusive classrooms. The qualitative data were analyzed using Spradley’s Taxonomy Analysis, while the quantitative data were analyzed descriptively using mean scores and thematic coding. The findings revealed that multicultural values were integrated into teaching and learning processes through culturally responsive teaching, cooperative learning, differentiated instruction, intercultural communication, and inclusive classroom interactions. The school policies, curriculum, and co-curricular activities also supported the implementation of multiculturalism by promoting equality, empathy, respect, collaboration, and social responsibility. Furthermore, the integration of multicultural values effectively fostered peaceful values and attitudes, including tolerance, mutual respect, empathy, social cohesion, non-discrimination, and conflict resolution among students. The study also proposed an inclusive multicultural and world peace education framework designed to strengthen peaceful educational environments, enhance social cohesion, and minimize discrimination in inclusive school settings. In conclusion, the integration of multicultural values within inclusive education plays a significant role in developing peaceful attitudes and creating harmonious educational environments. This study contributes to the development of multicultural and peace education practices, particularly in inclusive primary school contexts.

Besides, to support the teaching and learning process, the school has a special program namely, orientation and induction programs, and reflection and follow-up program. In addition, the problems of teachers are mainly about the adaptation, emotional bonding, limited time allotment, students’ mood and focus, students’ social skill and characters, teachers’ preparation, parents’ involvement, lack of facilities and technical skill and cost. The results of this study have important implications for classroom practice as it can be used as a resource and as the foundation for more detailed information strategy of the teaching and learning process during the pandemic.

Abstract

Parental involvement in inclusive school is crucial for the development of children with special needs. Thus, the present study observed an inclusive primary school in Denpasar to identify the types of parental involvement in the school, the school's programs to involve parents, and the challenges faced by the teachers in involving parents in their children's education. Following Miles' and Huberman's (1994) model of Interactive Qualitative Data Analysis combined with Epstein's et al. (2002) types of parental involvement at school, the present study revealed that 1) all the six types of parental involvement’s in Epstein’s model were identified with an average of moderate frequency; 2) Seven programs were designed to involve the parents, namely, parenting seminar, class conference, WhatsApp Group discussion, Guest teacher, interactive project, field trip, and collaboration with English-speaking community; 3) there were moderate challenges in involving parents in communicating with the schools, in decision making, and in enrolling the parents in the school activities. This implies that there should be more deliberate effort from the parents in inclusive schools to be more involved in their children’s education, while schools should relentlessly initiate and inspire more intensive parental involvements in the schools’ program.
