Abstract

Avocado (Persea americana) is a popular tropical fruit due to its health benefits and its diverse applications in culinary and cosmetic industries. The avocado fruit is not only consumed for its flesh, but its utilization has now expanded with the production of avocado oil. As interest in avocado oil increases, different extraction methods have been developed to obtain oil of the highest quality. This study aimed to analyze the chemical profile of avocado oil from two varieties, as well as evaluate its health potential. The research method used is descriptive, focusing on the composition of fatty acids analyzed using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The results of the study showed that the butter variety avocado oil contains fatty acids such as tetracosanoic acid, octadecenoic acid, undecylenic acid, palmitic acid, nonanoic acid, and heptacosanoic acid. Meanwhile, the alligator variety avocado oil contains fatty acids such as oleic acid and linoleic acid. The study concluded that variations in avocado fruit influence the fatty acid composition of avocado oil extracted by the autoclave method, where alligator variety avocado oil provides health benefits as a source of vegetable oil rich in oleic and linoleic acids, while the butter variety avocado oil offers benefits for nerve health. Recommendations for further research include clinical studies evaluating the health benefits of avocado oil, with a focus on the effects of fatty acids such as tetracosanoic acid, oleic acid, and linoleic acid, to provide stronger scientific evidence regarding their effects on nerve, heart, and skin health.

Abstract

Background: Tooth extraction is the process of removing teeth from the alveolus. It will leave a mark on the socket and surrounding soft tissue. One of the cells that plays an important role in the wound healing process after tooth extraction is fibroblasts. When an injury occurs, some blood vessels are damaged; therefore, new blood vessels need to form. Purple leaves extract could be an alternative treatment for wound healing after tooth extraction as it contains flavonoids, saponins, alkaloids, steroids, and tannins. Purpose: The study aimed to analyze the role of purple leaves extract on the increase in fibroblasts and blood vessels in the socket after tooth extraction in Wistar rats. Methods: The method used was a laboratory experiment with a post-test-only control group design. The samples used were 24 rats divided into two groups: the control group, which was given aquadest, and the treatment group, which was given 1.5 mL of purple leaves extract with 10% concentration by sondage. Tissue preparations were used to count fibroblasts, and blood vessels were counted and observed on the 3rd, 5th, and 7th days. Results: Statistical tests showed a significant difference in the number of fibroblasts and blood vessels between the control and treatment groups on days 3, 5, and 7. Conclusion: Purple leaves extract could increase the number of fibroblasts and blood vessels in the tooth socket after tooth extraction of Wistar rats.

Abstract

The advancement of digital technology has significantly influenced innovation in health vocational education. One such innovation is the use of virtual laboratories as simulation-based practicum media. This study aims to analyze students’ understanding levels regarding the use of virtual labs in Blood Group Serology Practicum at the Diploma III Blood Bank Technology Study Program, Poltekkes Kemenkes Malang. This research employed a quantitative descriptive method using a survey approach. The respondents were 68 students who had participated in the virtual lab practicum. Data were collected using a 5-point Likert-scale questionnaire covering conceptual understanding, user perception, and technical constraints. The findings revealed that students’ understanding levels of virtual lab usage were in the good to very good category, with an overall mean score of 4.61 ± 0.71. The conceptual understanding aspect achieved the highest mean score (4.69), indicating students’ strong comprehension of antigen–antibody reactions and agglutination interpretation. Meanwhile, the technical constraint aspect showed the lowest mean score (2.63), suggesting minimal technical issues. These results indicate that virtual laboratories are effective in enhancing conceptual understanding and serve as an efficient, safe, and competence-based alternative learning media in health vocational education.

Abstract

Introduction: Based on epidemiological data, the periodontitis prevalence in Indonesia reached 96.58%. Periodontitis is a periodontal disease caused by specific microorganisms causing attachment loss, alveolar bone resorption, and periodontal pocket. The pocket which is more than 6 mm couldn’t be carried out using standard care. Therefore bone grafting is needed to fix the bone defect. Cowhide Gelatin nanoparticle (GNPs) combined with Titanium-Prepared Platelet-Rich Fibrin (T-PRF) is an innovative healing of periodontitis. Objective: To review the potential of cowhide gelatin nanoparticles combined with titanium-prepared platelet-rich fibrin (T-PRF) as an innovation in the healing of periodontitis defects. Literature review: Cowhide GNPs are the main ingredients for the bone replacement, which are nano-sized, biocompatible, bioactive, osteoconductive, non-toxic, and have a porous structure that supports the drug-delivery process. T-PRF contains platelets, fibrin, growth factors that can stimulate bone regeneration. Discussion: GNPs support the attachment and proliferation of osteoblast cells and the formation of mineralized bone matrix. The contents of T-PRF, which are fibrin, platelets, and growth factors, one of TGF-β1 will produce bone formation and periodontal healing in the large number. Moreover, T-PRF has leukocyte-fibrin, which may give an antibacterial effect. Thus, GNPs combined with T-PRF have more potent properties that support each other in carrying out their functions to stimulate the healing process. Conclusion: The combination of cowhide gelatin nanoparticles (GNPs) and titanium-prepared platelet-rich fibrin (T-PRF) has the potential to be effective in bone regeneration in periodontitis defects.
