Abstract

The Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) program aims to monitor the growth and development of infants and young children through Early Initiation of Breastfeeding (IMD), exclusive breastfeeding, and appropriate complementary feeding (MP-ASI) until the age of two years. This study aims to evaluate the role and support of Posyandu cadres in Harjosari Village, who are often the closest and most accessible support system for mothers. To enhance their effectiveness, these cadres need improved knowledge and skills in growth monitoring, breastfeeding support, complementary feeding practices, and counseling techniques. The method used in this activity emphasized hands-on practice and participatory discussion to facilitate deeper understanding and application. Based on pre-test and post-test assessments, cadre knowledge increased by 12.5%. Statistical analysis using the paired t-test showed a significant improvement in knowledge (p-value = 0.0001), indicating the effectiveness of the intervention. The findings suggest that with proper training and support, Posyandu cadres can play a more active role in educating mothers. One recommendation is for cadres to initiate practical classes and discussions using infant and young child feeding counseling cards to improve maternal understanding and practices. This approach can contribute to ensuring that feeding practices are implemented correctly and appropriately, supporting optimal child growth and development.

Abstract

Introduction: Pregnancy complicated by liver disease is a rare but clinically challenging condition. Portal hypertension is one such liver disease that may occur in pregnant women, primarily caused by cirrhosis. Esophageal varices, a manifestation of portal hypertension, carry significant maternal and fetal mortality risks. Case Description: We present the case of a 22-year-old woman referred from the Internal Medicine-Gastroenterology Department with a diagnosis of grade IV esophageal varices and grade IV gastric fundal varices. At the initial referral to the Obstetrics and Gynecology clinic, her pregnancy was estimated at 5–6 weeks gestation. Despite the high morbidity and rarity of this case, the patient maintained the pregnancy until 34–35 weeks of gestation. She had a two-year history of esophageal varices, with previous hospitalizations for melena and hematemesis. Fetomaternal ultrasound revealed a singleton fetus in cephalic presentation, consistent with 34–35 weeks of gestation, with suspected intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Abdominal ultrasound suggested hepatic cirrhosis, and endoscopic evaluation confirmed grade IV esophageal and gastric fundal varices. Termination of pregnancy was performed via abdominal delivery. Conclusion: Preventing pregnancy complications, accurate diagnosis, and meticulous management that balances maternal and fetal risks are crucial in such cases to improve outcomes.

Abstract

The community service aims to increase the capacity of lecturers in developing video-based learning media. The service method is carried out through training activities. The target of the service is the Nutrition Department Lecturers of the Riau Ministry of Health Polytechnic. As many as 14 Nutrition Lecturers were involved in the training which was held in July 2023. The research instrument used was a closed sheet with four answer choices. Analysis of the training participants' responses to the training activities for making learning videos was carried out using descriptive statistical analysis. This is done by processing the proportion of data from filling in the responses by the training participants. Percentages are obtained based on modified Likert Scale calculations. The results showed that as many as 14 respondents or 100% of the respondents were in the category of strongly agreeing with the statements that led to a positive response from the trainees to the training activities that had been carried out. Follow-up workshops on creating innovative learning videos are urgently needed to acquire new skills for Teachers/Lecturers of the Department of Nutrition at the Riau Ministry of Health Polytechnic.

Abstract

This activity aims to improve the knowledge and role of Posyandu cadres in Harjosari Village, Pekanbaru City, to prevent heart disease. This activity is carried out as Posyandu cadre training on anthropometric measurements, blood cholesterol examinations, and counseling on healthy eating patterns to prevent heart disease. The activity was conducted at the BRIMOB Posyandu, Harjosari Village, attended by 16 Posyandu cadres. The activity began with anthropometric measurements to determine nutritional status, body fat composition, blood cholesterol examinations, and counseling on healthy eating patterns with the Mediterranean Diet. Mapping the results of anthropometric measurements and blood tests, especially cholesterol levels, shows that most Posyandu cadres are at risk of heart disease. After counseling, the cadres significantly increased their knowledge about heart disease and the Mediterranean diet. Community service activities in Harjosari Village have improved the Posyandu cadres' ability to prevent heart disease. This increase shows the effectiveness of training in strengthening the role of Posyandu cadres in educating the community about a healthy lifestyle and preventing heart disease. There has been an increase in cadres' knowledge about heart disease and the Mediterranean diet so that they are better prepared to educate the community about the importance of a healthy diet to prevent heart disease.

Abstract

Children’s consumption of vegetables and fruits remains low and often does not meet nutritional recommendations, potentially leading to long-term health problems, including increased risks of chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Insufficient vegetable intake may also negatively affect eye health and contribute to anemia, resulting in symptoms such as weakness, fatigue, and poor concentration in children. This community service aimed to improve knowledge and awareness regarding fruit and vegetable consumption among early childhood children in Ranah Singkuang Village. The activities were carried out from January to September 2024 at PAUD Ranah Singkuang Village and included educational sessions for children and PAUD teachers focusing on the variety and benefits of fruits and vegetables. The results demonstrated improved knowledge among teachers and young children, as well as positive behavioral changes among parents in providing healthier meals, especially those containing fruits and vegetables. Approximately 95% of students were observed bringing lunches that included fruit and vegetable components following the intervention. Based on these findings, it is recommended that similar educational activities continue to be implemented regularly and that PAUD teachers integrate play-based nutrition learning into daily classroom activities to promote sustainable healthy eating habits among young children.
