Abstract

Advancements in Internet of Things (IoT) technology have revolutionized agriculture by enabling real-time monitoring and automated environmental control to optimize crop growth. This study focuses on evaluating the impact of IoT implementation on greenhouse environmental stability and the growth of Robusta Coffee Clone BP 308 seedlings, emphasizing plant height and leaf count as key parameters. The IoT system incorporates DHT11/DHT22 sensors for temperature and humidity monitoring, soil pH sensors, and an ESP8266 WiFi module for data transmission to an IoT platform. Additionally, Fuzzy Logic algorithms were employed to analyze the data and regulate environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity automatically. The experimental design compared IoT-based systems with conventional methods in a controlled greenhouse environment. Results demonstrated that the IoT system significantly enhanced environmental stability, maintaining an average temperature of 26.59°C and humidity of 86.46%, compared to conventional systems with greater fluctuations of 28.43°C and 82.69%. This stability positively impacted seedling growth, with IoT-treated plants achieving significantly higher heights and leaf counts at weeks 3, 6, and 9. By week 9, IoT-treated seedlings averaged a height of 24.00 cm with 11.73 leaves, outperforming non-IoT seedlings, which reached only 14.07 cm with 8.27 leaves. These findings highlight IoT's potential to create optimal growth conditions, reduce environmental stress, and enhance photosynthetic efficiency. Furthermore, IoT's precision in managing resources supports sustainable agriculture, making it an essential tool for improving productivity and competitiveness, especially in coffee cultivation, a key commodity in Indonesia.

Abstract

The early growth of Coffea arabica seedlings is highly influenced by the quality of the growing medium and nutrient uptake efficiency during the nursery phase. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of local-material-based growing media formulations and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) inoculation on the vegetative growth of C. arabica Lini S 795 seedlings. The experiment was conducted using a completely randomized design (CRD) with eight treatments involving combinations of soil, rice husk, fermented manure, and Glomus sp. mycorrhiza, each replicated three times. Observed parameters included plant height, leaf number, root length, root dry weight, and shoot dry weight. Results showed that the combination of soil, rice husk, manure, and mycorrhiza significantly enhanced all growth parameters compared to the control. The synergistic interaction between local organic components and biological agents improved the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the growing media, thereby optimizing root and shoot development. These findings suggest that integrating locally available organic materials with mycorrhizal inoculants offers an effective, eco-friendly, and sustainable approach to coffee seedling cultivation, with high potential for broader field-scale application.

Abstract

Indonesia is one of the world’s largest producers of coffee and spices; however, the integration of these resources into innovative MSME products remains limited. Jember Regency, known as a center of robusta coffee and a producer of spices such as ginger, cardamom, and cinnamon, holds great potential that has yet to be fully utilized by micro-enterprises. This program aimed to enhance the competitiveness of coffee-based MSMEs through herbal coffee innovation training. The method used was a participatory-educational approach, consisting of a pretest, theoretical presentations, hands-on roasting and blending practice, organoleptic testing, and final evaluation. Participants were drawn from MSME actors and coffee farmer communities in the Jember area. Results showed a significant cognitive improvement, with average scores increasing from 36 to 80 (a 122% increase). Participants also showed improved hardskills in herbal coffee formulation, label design, and digital marketing. A blend of 10% ginger and 5% cardamom was rated highest in taste tests. This activity demonstrates that local resource-based interventions can effectively improve product competitiveness and MSME self-sufficiency.

Abstract

Coffee is one of Indonesia's prominent tree commodity plants. In both generative and vegetative propagation, one crucial consideration is the choice of growing media rich in macro and micro nutrients. This study aims to investigate the effect of different ratios of palm oil empty fruit bunch (TKKS) and the addition of NPK fertilizer on the growth of robusta coffee seedlings. The research was conducted from January to May 2024 at the Innovation Garden, State Polytechnic of Jember. This study employed a factorial Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 2 factors, each having 3 treatment levels. The first factor was the growing media ratio: T1 = Top Soil : TKKS : Sand (1:1:1), T2 = Top Soil : TKKS : Sand (2:1:1), T3 = Top Soil : TKKS : Sand (1:2:1). The second factor was NPK fertilizer application: N1 (1 gram NPK/polybag), N2 (1.5 grams NPK/polybag), N3 (2 grams NPK/polybag). These combinations resulted in 9 treatment groups, each replicated 3 times, totaling 27 experimental units. Data were analyzed using ANOVA, followed by Tukey’s HSD test at a 5% significance level (p < 0.05), using SPSS version 25. The results showed that the T3 growing media (1:2:1) significantly increased seedling height by 18.7%, stem diameter by 15.2%, leaf number by 17.4%, and root length by 22.5% compared to T1 (p < 0.05). Application of 1.5 g NPK/polybag (N2) increased seedling height by 12.3% (p < 0.05) and root length by 19.8% (p < 0.01) compared to N1. A significant interaction (p < 0.05) was observed between T3 media and 1.5 g NPK/polybag, specifically enhancing root length, indicating a synergistic effect on root development.

Abstract

One of the stages in the wet processing of coffee that can affect its flavor is fermentation. Fermentation is the process of removing the mucilage layer that still adheres to the coffee beans, which results in a distinctive coffee aroma and reduces caffeine content, especially in robusta coffee. After the fermentation process, packaging and storage are carried out. Storage is the stage where raw coffee beans are kept to maintain their quality until the next process. This study aims to determine the effect of fermentation duration on panelists' preference levels and the impact of storage duration on the physical quality characteristics of robusta coffee. This research employs both quantitative and qualitative descriptive methods. The results show that storage duration does not affect the physical quality characteristics of robusta coffee beans. The moisture content parameter after storage was found to be 12.2%, the density parameter averaged 0.691 gr/ml, and the defect value parameter fell into grade 3. The study also shows that different fermentation durations do not significantly affect the panelists' preference levels, with an average score of 3-4,1.
