Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the extent to which the ELSA (English Language Speech Assistant) application is effective in improving students' English speaking skills, particularly in the aspects of pronunciation, intonation, and fluency. This study is conducted at SMK Swasta AKP Galang using a quantitative experimental method. Two classes of XI grade students are selected, namely XI RPL 1 (40 students) as the experimental group and XI RPL 2 (40 students) as the control group. Students' speaking ability is assessed through oral-based pre-tests and post-tests. The results of the statistical analysis show that the calculated t value (t₀) of 6.25 is higher than the t-table value of 1.699 at the 5% significance level with a degree of freedom (df) of 78. This finding indicates a statistically significant difference between the two groups. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of the ELSA Speak application is effective in improving students' speaking skills. This study also underscores the important role of mobile-based language learning technology (MALL) in supporting communicative teaching approaches as well as encouraging students' learning independence in the vocational education environment

Abstract

Setiap orang memiliki mesin cerdas yang berbeda dan gaya belajar yang berbeda pula. Seringkali siswa juga mengalami kesulitan belajar termasuk kesulitan dalam belajar bahasa Inggris, khususnya dalam keterampilan membaca. Mereka masih membutuhkan tes yang bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi kemampuan membaca mereka. Dalam hal ini, peneliti menggunakan mesin stylus untuk mengeksplorasi kemampuan membaca siswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi kesulitan siswa dalam memahami teks serta kemampuan membaca siswa yang menggunakan mesin cerdas. Metode penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif. Subjek penelitian ini adalah 37 mahasiswa program studi Bahasa Inggris Universitas Muslim Bersatu angkatan Al Washliyah 2023/2024. Pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini menggunakan teknik observasi dan wawancara. Data diperoleh melalui soal pilihan ganda dan esai. Hasil penelitian menemukan lima tipe keterampilan membaca siswa, yaitu berpikir (10 siswa), intuisi (4 siswa), perasaan (8 siswa), dan insting (6 siswa). Tipe membaca yang paling banyak ditemukan adalah intuitif, karena memiliki skor lebih tinggi pada tes membaca. Tipe intuitif mencapai hasil membaca terbaik, menunjukkan bahwa siswa tipe ini lebih mampu memahami dan menganalisis teks secara mendalam.

Abstract

Since the launch of the “Bilingual Policy for all schools supported by Yayasan Pendidikan Katolik (YPK) Don Bosco KAM in 2030,” schools have debated its impact. Teachers of non-English subjects worry about adapting, while parents fear their children may struggle with bilingual instruction. This quantitative study examines perceptions of students, teachers, parents, and staff at Santo Yoseph Catholic Private High School. The research explores key concerns: the necessity of the policy, its effect on local languages, feasibility by 2030, budget sufficiency, availability of qualified teachers, and whether non-English subject teachers can teach bilingually. A questionnaire with seven questions was distributed to 40 participants in Indonesian and later translated into English. Results show 60% believe bilingual education is essential, 10% disagree, 25% are uncertain, and 5% have no opinion. While over half support the policy, challenges remain, including limited funding, a shortage of trained bilingual teachers, and the need for more English classes and learning materials. Successful implementation requires the Don Bosco Catholic Education Foundation to increase funding and address these challenges to ensure smooth integration of bilingual education by 2030.
