Abstract

Anemia remains a chronic nutritional problem in Indonesia, with a relatively high prevalence. According to the 2013 Riskesdas survey, the prevalence of anemia among adolescents aged 15-24 years in Indonesia was 18.4%, which increased to 32% in subsequent years. This means that 3-4 out of 10 adolescents suffer from anemia. Research on the benefits of iron supplementation to reduce the incidence of anemia by increasing hemoglobin levels in adolescent girls has been conducted in several regions in Indonesia. However, similar studies are still rare in NTB, particularly in Mataram City. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of iron supplementation in increasing the hemoglobin levels of adolescent girls in Mataram City. This study is a quasi-experimental research with a one-group pretest and posttest design. The results showed that at the pretest, 58 samples (96.67%) had normal hemoglobin levels, while 2 people (3.33%) had mild anemia. At the posttest, 57 people (95%) had normal hemoglobin levels, 2 people (3.33%) had mild anemia, and 1 person (1.67%) had moderate anemia. The average hemoglobin level at the pretest was 14.47 mg/dl and increased to 14.75 mg/dl six weeks later (posttest). There was no significant difference in hemoglobin levels between the pretest and posttest, with a p-value of 0.210 (p > 0.05).

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is silent killer disease which if it is not treated further, diabetes can cause complications such as diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy is the first cause of blindness in productive age. BMI is known to be a risk factor for diabetic retinopathy. Aim of this study was to determine the relationship between BMI and the degree of diabetic retinopathy in type 2 DM patients in the Prolanis Community. The research design uses an observational study with a cross-sectional approach. The sample was type 2 DM patients in Mataram Prolanis Community. Sampling technique used consecutive sampling with minimum sample 29 people. The research results will be analyzed using the Spearman test. Based on the research results, it was found that 46 people had type 2 DM. From 46 people, 7 of them suffered from DR, 5 people had mild NPDR and 2 people had moderate NPDR. From the statistical test results, it was found that there was no relationship between BMI and the degree of diabetic retinopathy with a p value of 0.996 (p > 0.05) and a correlation coefficient of 0.001, which means that the strength of the relationship is very weak between these two variables. The conclusion of the study is that there is no relationship between BMI and the degree of diabetic retinopathy in type 2 DM patients because diabetic retinopathy is a multifactorial disease.

Abstract

Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem whose incidence is quite high in Indonesia. Efforts to prevent and reduce stunting rates must involve all parties comprehensively. The process of stunting starts from pre-conception when a teenager becomes a mother who is malnourished and anemic. In Indonesia, 37.1% of women of childbearing age suffer from anemia. Several studies report that there is a relationship between anemia in pregnancy and the incidence of stunting in toddlers, however similar research is still rarely carried out in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). This study aims to determine the relationship between a history of anemia in pregnant women and the incidence of stunting in toddlers at the Nipah Community Health Center, Malaka, North Lombok Regency (KLU). This research is an observational analytical survey research with a case control design. There were 69 samples in the case group (stunted toddlers) and 69 samples in the control group (normal toddlers). The results showed that there were 101 mothers (73.2%) with normal Hb levels, 24 mothers (17.4%) with mild anemia and 13 mothers (9.4%) with moderate anemia. Overall, 37 mothers (26.8%) suffered from anemia. The conclusion of this study is that there is no significant relationship between a history of anemia in pregnancy and the incidence of stunting in toddlers with a p value of 0.842. Obtaining an odds ratio value of 1 means that mothers who experience anemia during pregnancy have no risk of having stunted children. Anemia during pregnancy, parental income, education level and mother's employment simultaneously influence the stunting variable by 14.9%.

Abstract

Iron deficiency anemia remains a significant global health issue, particularly among young adults. Medical students are theoretically expected to possess superior nutritional literacy compared to the general population due to their academic exposure to metabolism and digestive systems. However, a gap often exists between theoretical knowledge and daily dietary practices. This article reviews the literature regarding the relationship between nutritional knowledge levels and iron intake adequacy. The review highlights that nutritional knowledge involves cognitive levels ranging from recalling information to evaluation. Iron metabolism is complex, involving heme and non-heme iron absorption, which is significantly influenced by enhancers and inhibitors. Despite having high nutritional knowledge, medical students' eating behaviors are increasingly determined by modern lifestyle factors, including social media trends and fast-food consumption, which may compromise iron intake. Conclusively, bridging the gap between knowledge and practice requires not just memorization but the application of balanced nutrition principles (Tumpeng Gizi Seimbang) to ensure optimal iron bioavailability.
