Abstract

Self-actualization is the peak experience in Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory. Maslow's hierarchy of needs consists of physiological needs, the need for a sense of security (safety needs), the need to have affection (social needs), esteem needs, and self-actualization. The purpose of this study is to describe how Maslow's holistic-dynamic theory describes self-actualization and the Sufistic view of the concept of self-actualization. This study employs a qualitative research method in conjunction with a type of literature review. The data collection technique used is documentation. The results of the study show that Sufistic psychology views self-actualization as a peak experience that is not absolute because humans are not just physical, mechanical beings. Ibn 'Arabi views that humans will reach a peak experience when they have abandoned themselves to unite with God (fana'); then humans must experience four levels: Shari'a, Tariqah, essence, and makrifat. In addition, al-Ghazali also emphasized the fulfillment of mashlahah al-'amm as his peak experience.

Abstract

Knowledge of culturally influenced emotionality is an important set of knowledge for culturally responsive counseling practice. Culture influences the perception, control, and expression of emotions not least within counselling where much emphasis is laid on sensitivity to cultural norms and values. The purpose of this research is to describe forms of emotional languages in Madurese culture and discuss the implications for culturally responsive counseling. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach, where data is obtained through literature review, interviews, observation, and documentation. The results of this study show that the Madurese people manifest their feelings to others directly (blak-blakan) and indirectly using symbolic language with the values of dignity (martabat), propriety (tengka), patience (sabbhar), and social solidarity. An understanding of these ways of communicating emotions is critical in counseling for the development of therapeutic relationships that are both effective and culturally sensitive. The study suggests the need for integrating more empathy, contextually and culturally sensitive training approach that takes into consideration local value system as well as the need to tailor interventions to reflect local cultural sensitivities as a way of improving the effectiveness of psychological support.

Abstract

Bullying in educational settings remains a serious issue with negative impacts on students' social and emotional well-being. This community service program aims to strengthen Self-Assertiveness, Empathy, and Emotional Regulation (SEE) behaviors as a preventive strategy to reduce bullying tendencies at Madrasah Aliyah Al-Djufri Blumbungan Pamekasan. The activity uses a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, involving 40 students from grades X–XII and guidance and counselling teachers as collaborative partners. The implementation was conducted in four sessions, including social identification, material delivery, role-playing bullying phenomena, and reflective games to strengthen social-emotional skills. The effectiveness of the program was measured using pretests and posttests with a four-dimensional bullying scale (verbal, physical, social, and cyber). The analysis results showed a significant decrease in all aspects with a p-value < 0.001 and an average decrease of 42.2%. Qualitative findings revealed an increase in empathy, assertive courage, and more adaptive emotional regulation abilities. This program also encourages the formation of SEE Ambassadors as agents of change in creating an empathetic and violence-free school climate. This activity underscores the effectiveness of the SEE-based participatory and reflective approach in bullying prevention while also strengthening humanistic and character-based Islamic educational practices.

Abstract

Counselling ethics has been predominantly shaped by Western philosophical traditions, yet its application in culturally diverse settings requires ethical grounding that resonates with local moral understandings. Rather than assuming limitations in international codes, this study examines how a contextualised ethical perspective may complement existing frameworks by exploring the teachings of Abah Anom, a widely respected Sufi guide whose ethical reflections remain influential within Indonesian Muslim communities. His teachings are analysed not as theological prescriptions but as culturally situated ethical resources that illuminate intention, emotional discipline, relational presence, and moral orientation in counselling practice. The study employs a Gadamerian hermeneutic approach, drawing on textual sources, including Miftahus Shudur, sermon transcripts, and institutional documents, and purposively selected informants comprising senior disciples, a Sufi scholar, and counsellors familiar with his teachings. The analytic process followed an iterative part-whole movement, dialogical interpretation, and socio-religious contextualisation to construct meaning across texts, participant experiences, and contemporary counselling concerns. The analysis identifies four ethical dispositions: sincerity, patience, empathy, and service, as dynamic modes of ethical self-formation rather than fixed moral virtues. These dispositions guide counsellors in aligning intention with client welfare, regulating affective responses, deepening relational understanding, and maintaining an orientation of service towards others. A key interpretative insight that emerged is the view of ethical practice as an ongoing cultivation of inner states, offering an alternative perspective to procedural or rule-based approaches commonly emphasised in professional codes. The study contributes by showing how a local Sufi moral framework can enter into constructive dialogue with global counselling ethics and enrich culturally responsive practice without proposing doctrinal authority or universal applicability. Future research may focus on how these ethical dispositions are enacted in real counselling interactions or undertake comparative hermeneutic studies across other Indonesian spiritual traditions.

Abstract

Recent research in Islamic counselling and psychology has explored spiritual strategies for family conflicts, but the experiential meaning of Sufi-based practices within counselling remains underexplored. Most existing studies describe Sufi ideas theoretically but rarely examine how counsellors and families experience these principles in tension, reconciliation, and relational adjustments. This study fills that gap by examining how specific Sufi values are embodied, interpreted, and applied in Islamic family counselling sessions. Using a hermeneutic-phenomenological approach inspired by van Manen, the research involved five Muslim counsellors and eight families, selected through purposive sampling from a community counselling network. Data collection included detailed interviews and ethically approved observations of counselling sessions during non-private moments. Analyses combined meaning-unit condensation with reflexive thematic analysis. Three experiential themes emerged: (1) inner readiness as an ethical foundation, where both counsellors and parents describe quieting the heart as essential for dialogue; (2) embodied spiritual regulation, with practices like dhikr helping to recalibrate emotional intensity and foster empathetic listening; and (3) relational deliberation, where Qur’an-guided reflection promotes more collaborative and less adversarial decision-making. These results offer a contextual understanding of how Sufi-inspired spirituality influences conflict resolution in Indonesian Muslim families. Further studies should explore these patterns in various settings and larger samples.

Abstract

This research aims to explore spiritual experiences as an addiction recovery mechanism in individuals undergoing pesantren-based rehabilitation. This study uses a qualitative approach with an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) design to understand the life experiences of participants in interpreting the recovery process. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews, observations, and field records of individuals who are undergoing or have completed pesantren-based rehabilitation programs. The results show that spiritual experiences play an important role as an important mechanism in addiction recovery through four main dimensions, namely: spiritual awareness as a turning point for change, spiritual practice as a means of self-regulation against craving and prevention of relapse, religious community as a source of recovery support, and identity reconstruction as part of recovery transformation. These findings suggest that addiction recovery in the context of pesantren-based rehabilitation is not only related to the cessation of substance use, but is a psychospiritual process that involves a change in the meaning of life, self-control, communal support, and the formation of a new identity. This study proposes the concept of spiritual recovery mechanism as a theoretical contribution to expand the perspective of recovery capital in the study of addiction recovery.

Abstract

Bullying is a form of aggressive behavior, typically carried out intentionally and repeatedly by children or other individuals, with the aim of hurting others in order to gain personal satisfaction or happiness. This highlights the critical role of parents in helping children prevent such behavior. This community service project aims to enhance parents' knowledge and skills in preventing bullying, in order to foster a child-friendly and child-appropriate village environment. The methods employed include classical guidance sessions and communication skills training, using a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach. The program emphasizes community support and involvement throughout all activities. The outcomes of this program show an increase in parents' understanding and abilities, as evidenced by their enthusiasm during discussions, Q&A sessions, and practical role-plays demonstrating healthy communication between parents and children. These improvements contribute to the prevention of bullying behavior among children and support the realization of a child-friendly village.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the description of career orientation among teenagers in Madura based on their identity. This research uses a qualitative design with a phenomenological approach. The primary data researchers use is obtained through in-depth interviews and observations in the form of the words and actions of people who are observed or interviewed based on research topics obtained from research subjects. Supporting data for this research was obtained from a literature study. The research subjects were seven people with the criteria: (1) millennial teenagers aged 16 to 21 years, both men and women; (2) subjects residing in Madura; (3) subjects having emotional closeness to the researcher; and (4) subjects being willing to participate in research. Data analysis in this research uses phenomenological analysis techniques according to the research type used: phenomenal reduction, editorial reduction, and transcendental reduction. The research results include: first, the criteria and type of career they dream of, prioritizing thinking abilities (not physical), being relaxed, and having special skill qualifications. Second, the underlying motives for millennial teenagers in Madura in determining their dream career are based, among other things, on a sense of comfort, money, or salary, not feeling pressured, and having the value of service. Third, the driving figures in career choice are family and friends. Fourth, career achievement standards can be measured by the ability to develop an independent, private business that is developed from their dream profession, and the target retirement age for Madurese millennial teenagers is around 40–50 years old.

Abstract

Technological advances in digital learning have led to the transformation of education through flexible microlearning, but its effectiveness is greatly influenced by the self-regulated learning (SRL) capacity of students in managing their learning processes. This study aims to examine participants' experiences of utilising digital microlearning through the Ruang Karya platform, as well as the role of SRL in promoting continuous learning. The study used a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method to understand the meaning of the learning experience directly experienced by the participants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews until saturation was reached. The results of the study show that digital microlearning provides easy access, time flexibility, and concise, focused material presentation, thus increasing learning efficiency. However, the effectiveness of this is greatly influenced by SRL skills such as time management, goal setting, learning strategies, and self-monitoring and evaluation. Participants with good SRL skills tend to have a more optimal and meaningful learning experience. Integrating microlearning digital and SRL also promotes independent learning, increases intrinsic motivation, and strengthens preparedness to face academic and future challenges. Therefore, strengthening SRL is crucial in optimising microlearning digital as a sustainable learning strategy in the digital era.
