Abstract

Dampelas Lake, also known as Talaga Lake, in Central Sulawesi Indonesia, lacks data on fish communities, especially biological aspects, including a wild population of bonylip barb Osteochilus vittatus (Valenciennes, 1842). Locally known as ikan nilem, this freshwater fish commodity is not native to Sulawesi. The purpose of this research was to analyze the length-weight relationship, condition factor and DNA barcode of the bonylip barb population in Dampelas Lake. Bonylip barb specimens (101 males and 78 females) were collected from Lake Dampelas during July 2023 using fish traps. The total length and weight ranges were 57-211 mm and 3-107 g. Length-weight relationships were W = 3×10-5 L2,8219 (males); W = 3×10-6 L3,2574 (females); and W = 1,1×10-5 L3,0176 (both sexes combined), indicating an isometric growth pattern. Condition factor ranged from 0.471-1.652 with similar mean values for males (1.01) and females (1.02). DNA barcodes for Lake Dampelas bonylip barbs nested in one of four O. vittatus clades, indicating a need for reviewing Osteochilus taxonomy. Most adult females had spent gonads, indicating seasonal spawning, with implications for developing an economically viable fishery which could also help control this non-native species in Dampelas Lake. Keywords: Cyprinidae, freshwater fisheries, growth pattern, introduced fish, mitochondrial DNA

Abstract

Indonesia could potentially benefit significantly from economically important lobster species of the Panulirus genus, particularly the painted spiny lobster (P. versicolor) and the white-whiskered coral crayfish (P. femoristriga). Effective conservation decisions relating to these species require detailed knowledge of morphological variation and genetic relationships, especially in Palu Bay, Central Sulawesi, which is broadly considered pivotal for lobster conservation management. In this study, we conducted morphometric and genetic analyses to examine diversity and population structure of P. versicolor and P. femoristriga. From May to November 2021, a total of 72 specimens were collected in Kabonga Village, Donggala Regency, consisting of 53 P. versicolor and 19 P. femoristriga. Using the truss morphometric method, we divided the lobster body into four regions and measured 24 morphometric characters. Despite shared external traits, our truss morphometric analysis indicated that the two species represent distinct populations. Genetic analyses were performed on representative samples (n = 2) using mitochondrial COI sequences, confirming their identity as P. versicolor and P. femoristriga. Although haplotype analysis revealed genetic variability, the analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) showed that the two populations shared genetic traits and had no significant genetic differences. Haplotype networks further indicated interconnections with more than one nucleotide substitution among haplotypes. Our findings demonstrate that although P. versicolor and P. femoristriga coexist in Palu Bay, they are morphologically distinct and require separate management and conservation strategies. These results provide baseline information for developing sustainable lobster fishery management in Central Sulawesi.

Abstract

Community service activities entitled “Education on the Impact of Coastal Environmental Pollution and Empowerment of Coastal Communities in Waste Management through the 3R Approach (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle)” at Hidayatullah Integral Elementary School in Tondo Village, Palu City, aims to create a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable coastal environment with high aesthetic value through the active involvement of the community in 3R-based waste management. This activity is beneficial in various aspects of community life, including environmental, social, economic, and educational aspects. The methods used to carry out this community service activity include education and socialization, training, and workshops. Additionally, this PKM activity series includes coastal clean-up actions as well as monitoring and evaluation aimed at assessing the program's effectiveness by observing changes in the awareness and behavior of the target audience in managing waste. The entire series of activities, including preparation, socialization, and counseling as well as beach clean-up actions, ran smoothly. Elementary school students, as the target audience, showed great enthusiasm for this activity.

Abstract

In Aceh Province, tiger prawns (Penaeus monodon) are one of the main commodities of farmers for cultivation. Feed is one of the factors that can support the development of tiger prawn culture. The quality feed is feed that contains essential nutrients in sufficient quantities, one of which is protein. This study aims to determine the effect of commercial feed with different protein content on the growth and survival of tiger prawn fry. This study used a completely randomized design (CRD) method consisting of 3 treatments and 4 repetitions, namely P1 (using 40% protein feed), P2 (using 35% protein feed), and P3 (using 26% protein feed). The results showed that commercial feed with different protein content had an effect on active weight growth and feed conversion ratio, but had no effect on tiger prawn survival. Furthermore, the best protein content for the growth and survival of tiger prawn was obtained, namely 40%.Keywords: commercial feed; growth; protein; survival rate; tiger prawn.

Abstract

The problem in the management of blue swimming crab (BSC) fisheries is a decrease in stock that overlaps with an increase in fishing activities. This study aimed to analyze the ratio of spawning potential (SPR), reproductive potential, and reproductive productivity of BSCs taken from the Spermonde Islands. Spawning potential was analyzed using SPR, while reproductive potential analysis used the relative proportion of data between female, berried female and the average fecundity of each class size. The results showed that the BSC in Spermonde were growth overfishing and recruitment overfishing. The SPR of the BSC was estimated to be 7%, below the biological reference point. The highest reproductive potential index of berried females occurred in the group with a carapace width of 111-120 mm which contributed 36.84% of the total egg production. The value of reproductive productivity was 1.35 indicating a productive population. Current legislation allows the capture of BSCs with carapace sizes larger than 100 mm. Based on the data of this study, this size limit has the potential to eliminate 65.92% of the total egg production in the Spermonde Islands. To ensure the sustainability of BSCs in the Spermonde Islands, it is necessary to limit size by capturing BSCs >120 mm to protect the berried female and increase total egg production.

Abstract

The grey-eel catfish is a highly valued fish species in some parts of Indonesia. The fish is common in brackish water of estuaries, marine and freshwater habitat. They are not are not usually catched in commercial scale because of the limited population in its habitat. Although the status is not evaluated, the fish is predicted facing extinction in several countries. We conducted a study to examine the biological information and reproductive biology of the fish in Kota Langsa to gather information that can be utilize to evaluate reproductive status of the fish in several habitats. Parameters tested in the study includes sex ratio, length-weight relationships, candition factor, size at first maturity fecundity and reproductive potential of the fish. Research results provide information that the fish follows negative allometric model with constant condition factor throughout the study. The catches were relatively young fish which have not reached maturity stage. Fishes in the class sized at 510-550 mm provide the largest contribution to total eggs production. To ensure sustainability of the fish it is advised that the fish must catched at size larger than 550 mm.
