Abstract

This research evaluates the irregularities in slum spatial planning, both housing and the lack of initial foundation facilities and infrastructure in Tanjung Tiram Village, Batu Bara Regency. One of the reasons is the high and uneven population density, especially in terms of land availability. The impact of this condition is poor environmental sanitation, which has the potential to affect environmental sustainability. Low public knowledge and understanding of sanitation can be seen in environmentally unfriendly behavior. One basic example is a lack of awareness of preserving rivers, which can be useful for daily life as a source of clean water due to the high rate of waste disposal into rivers, which can increase the risk of disease spread. The Batu Bara Regency Government is trying to improve the situation with the concept of slum spatial planning through community empowerment programs. The programmed is not running optimally due to a lack of community sympathy for the environment. Therefore, this research aims to examine the extent of community sympathy for the concept of spatial planning with the environmental sanitation improvement programmed in Tanjung Tiram Village, as well as the components that influence this sympathy. The research method used is qualitative with a rationalistic approach. The research began with a literature analysis to understand the research variables. Then, research was carried out in the field to describe the specifications of community sympathy in sanitation management, identify patterns of change in community behavior, and analyze the components that influence community sympathy. The findings show that community sympathy is reflected in responsibility and attention to the interests of others. The community is involved in the entire sanitation improvement process, from initiation to monitoring the use of bathing, washing, and toilets (MCK++). Community motivation comes from cadre intervention, which provides understanding, increases sympathy and responsibility, and strengthens community foundations in sanitation management. In this research, it is hoped that there will be increased cooperation and outreach to the community regarding the importance of slum spatial planning through community empowerment programmed by managing healthy environmental sanitation, developing integrated planning, and social supervision in implementing sustainable activity programmed.

Abstract

Industrial estates in the northern region of Medan City are currently developing close to community settlements, which have the potential to have a negative impact on the environment and public health. These impacts include air and noise pollution, water and soil pollution, declining property values, increased crime problems, and environmental damage. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a study on the suitability of industrial estates to the carrying capacity of the environment. This study aims to assess the suitability of industrial estates with the Carrying Capacity and Carrying Capacity of Ecosystem Services-Based Environment. The method used in this study is quantitative descriptive, which describes environmental characteristics and the phenomenon of industrial estate development. The results of the study show variations in land suitability in the northern region of Medan City. In Medan Belawan District, most of the land (1,566.22 hectares) is not suitable for industrial estates, while in Medan Deli, most of the land (1,358.26 hectares) is very suitable. Medan Labuhan District is dominated by suitable land (2,157.42 hectares), while Medan Marelan has an even distribution between very suitable and suitable land. In coastal reclamation areas, most of the land (262.46 hectares) is not suitable.

Abstract

The "Compact City" planning concept aims to manage urban growth in a structured and efficient manner, as well as prevent urban sprawl or irregular urban development. The city of Medan, as a big city, has not fully implemented this concept, although the rapid development of the city has caused problems such as limited land, high urbanization, declining environmental quality, and transportation challenges. This study aims to measure the potential of regional compactness in Medan based on three main factors of urban compactness: density, mixed land, and intensification. The research approach uses a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, where quantitative analysis is used to measure the cohesiveness factor of the city with Sturgess cluster analysis tools and spatial mapping using ArcGIS 10.5, while qualitative analysis provides a more in-depth explanation of quantitative data. The results show that out of 23 villages in northern Medan, only 4 villages have the highest potential for the implementation of the compact city concept, namely Besar Village, Tangkahan, Tanah Enam Ratus, and Rengas Pulau. This is influenced by the more formed cohesive structure, especially in the function of the mixture.

Abstract

The flash flood in Belawan sub-district was caused by the entry of water from the Belawan and Deli rivers into the area when the sea water was at high tide. The inundation caused by the elevation of the land is below the level of the tide and river water enters through the drainage channel. Rob research in Belawan uses descriptive and qualitative methods. The distribution of inundation was analyzed using tidal analysis using the admiralty method which was the input to calculate the distribution of inundation using GIS. The flood risk index is calculated using the threat index and vulnerability index parameters. The results of this research show that the disaster risk index in Belawan sub-district is already at high risk with a risk index of 0.78.

Abstract

Increased population growth causes land needs to increase and forces underprivileged people to live in inappropriate areas such as river banks. The purpose of this research is to identify the types of spatial utilization and the dynamics of spatial utilization of non-conformity to spatial planning regulations in the Deli River border corridor in Medan City. This research uses a descriptive-qualitative approach with Geographic Information System (GIS)-based spatial analysis method, particularly overlay technique, to compare the regulation of Medan City Regional Regulation on Regional Spatial Plan Year 2022-2042. The analysis in 2024 showed significant discrepancies between the existing space utilization and the planned spatial pattern of the RTRW, indicating deviations between planning and actual conditions that may affect ecological and economic functions and hinder sustainable development. The identification of mismatches in various areas shows that incompatible land uses can disrupt the balance of the ecosystem and require more effective spatial adjustments.

Abstract

Mangrove land transformation refers to the change in mangrove land use from its original condition to a different form, which often involves the conversion of mangrove land into other land uses that are more used by humans. Some of the consequences of mangrove transformation are the loss of habitats that are important for various types of organisms, including fish, birds, and crustaceans. This can result in a decrease in biodiversity and even the extinction of certain species, mangrove areas are more susceptible to abrasion, deterioration of water quality, reduced green open space for water catchment areas, drought, lack of oxygen levels and impact on people's livelihoods Many people living around mangrove forests depend on these ecosystems for their livelihoods, such as fishermen and collectors of non-timber forest products. The conversion of mangrove land can threaten the sustainability of their livelihoods. The use of mangrove land in Medan Belawan, Medan Labuhan and Medan Marelan Districts continues to change to other land uses, this study aims to examine the dynamics of mangrove land transformation based on policies from time to time, examine the change of mangrove land use in Medan Belawan, Medan Labuhan and Medan Marelan Districts and examine the suitability of the implementation of the RTRW spatial polar plan to the use of existing mangrove land. The method used in this study is qualitative descriptive, the research is carried out through a survey of changes in mangrove land use and identified through data processing with the Geographic Information System.
