Abstract

Malnutrition in infancy is irreversible on growth and development, so toddlers need adequate and quality food intake. The factors that indirectly cause malnutrition in toddlers are parenting patterns. Mothers’ parenting patterns that are not good in feeding toddlers can be caused by low mothers’ comprehension and behavior in choosing food. This study aims to know comprehension level and parenting culture with the feeding behavior of toddlers in Tulungagung Regency. This study used an analytical observational research design with a cross-sectional study approach. The respondents amounted to 72 mothers of toddlers. The research instrument used a questionnaire and then analyzed using a chi-square test. The majority of mothers with toddlers had good comprehension about nutrition and food intake for toddlers, ideal parenting culture, and adequate feeding behavior. Based on the analysis using chi-square, the comprehension level had a relationship with feeding behavior in toddlers (p-value of 0.013), while parenting culture had no relationship with feeding behavior in toddlers (p-value of 0.270). The conclusion is there is a relationship between the comprehension level and the feeding behavior of toddlers and there is no relationship between parenting culture and the feeding behavior of toddlers.

Abstract

Background: Type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) can have a notable impact on the psychological and physical well-being of individuals, which in turn affects the management of the condition. Men and women experiencing stress and adopting distinct coping strategies. However, research focusing specifically on T2DM in men is still limited.Purpose: The present study intends to investigate the distress and coping strategies adopted by male T2DM outpatients in Malang, East Java, Indonesia. Methods: This study employed a qualitative research design and conducted in-depth interviews to 24 male T2DM outpatients. The interview guidelines were formulated using the Indonesian version of the Diabetes Distress Scale (DDS17) questionnaire, which comprised four domains: physician distress, emotional burden, regimen distress, and interpersonal distress. A thematic analysis was performed to analyze the results gathered during the research and compile them into a final report. Results: The study revealed that individuals diagnosed with T2DM experienced a range of emotional and practical difficulties, including feelings of fear, anxiety, and a lack of understanding. Disease burden, a lack of understanding of both diabetes and healthcare services, difficulties managing their diet, routine medication, financial concerns, and fatigue also contributed to the distress. To cope with distress, the informants identified eight distinct coping strategies. Of these, the most effective strategy was receiving support from family members, followed by acceptance, self management, positive attitude, understanding of their illness, joining the diabetes community, spirituality, and getting more information about T2DM.Conclusion: The findings of this study indicated that men experience eight distinct types of stress and utilise comparable coping strategies associated with T2DM. Emotional distress represents the predominant pressure, while family support constitutes the primary coping strategy. These results are important for nurses and other healthcare professionals in supporting patients.

Abstract

Background: Adolescents constitute a significant portion of the global population and fall within the age range of 10–19 years. During adolescence, individuals undergo various physical, social, emotional, and hormonal changes. A lack of knowledge regarding reproductive health among adolescents is partly attributed to limited access to accurate and comprehensive information. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the GenRe KIT Snakes and Ladders as an interactive educational tool to improve adolescents' knowledge about reproductive health. Methods: The research design used was a quasi-experimental design, with two groups, pre-test and posttest. The population consisted of adolescents, with a sample of 72 participants selected through simple random sampling. The inclusion criteria were adolescents 14-19 years old. A pretest was conducted before the intervention, followed by a posttest after the intervention. The instrument used was a modified Tentang Kita module by BKKBN, consisting of 21 knowledge and 13 attitude items related to reproductive health. Validity was confirmed with Pearson correlation values (r = 0.364–0.807), and reliability was high, with Cronbach’s alpha of 0.889 for knowledge and 0.745 for attitude. Results: The pre-test score in the intervention group was 13.11 (SD = 1.75) and improved significantly to 19.86 (SD = 1.33) after the intervention (p< 0.001). Post-intervention, the intervention group’s knowledge score remained substantially higher than the control group’s (p < 0.001). The between-group effect size (Cohen’s d = 3.48) indicated a very large effect, confirming the GenRe KIT Snakes and Ladders game's superior effectiveness in enhancing adolescents’ reproductive health knowledge compared to traditional lecture-based methods. Conclusion: GenRe KIT Snakes and Ladders game is effective in increasing adolescents' reproductive health knowledge and shows potential as an engaging educational tool in schools and community-based programs. Despite limitations related to study design, sample scope, and short intervention duration, the findings support further research using larger, more diverse populations and randomized designs to assess long-term impacts and behavioral outcomes.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Adolescents often acquire health knowledge through traditional education but frequently face challenges in sustaining healthy behaviors due to a range of social, environmental, psychological, and developmental factors. Contribution: We developed "EduHealth Time," an Android application co-designed with educators and health personnel to deliver on-demand health education videos and integrated screening modules (anthropometry, anaemia risk, illness monitoring), with built-in functionality for exporting data to support School Health Unit documentation. Method: A one-group pretest-posttest design was implemented during a community-service pilot at SMPIT As-Salam Malang (October–November 2024), involving 65 junior high school students. The app development followed the Plan–Act–Observe–Reflect cycle. Usability and feasibility were evaluated through a seven-item structured survey. Results: EduHealth Time was made publicly available on Google Play. Usability outcomes were highly positive: 92% of participants reported ease of data entry, 100% experienced no system errors, and 100% completed screening tasks without difficulty. The educational and screening functions were rated feasible by 92% of users. Significant improvements were observed in knowledge scores: +5.2 points for balanced diet, +21.4 points for physical activity, and +7.4 points for reproductive health. Conclusion: The EduHealth Time application is a scalable and contextually relevant mHealth platform that enhances adolescent health knowledge and supports self-monitoring. Its integration of multimedia learning and screening features provides a model for continuous school-based health education.

Abstract

Suboptimal infant and young child feeding practices remain a major contributor to child malnutrition, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Maternal nutritional literacy plays a key role in shaping appropriate feeding behaviors. Digital platforms, such as WhatsApp and mobile health (mHealth) applications, have emerged as potential tools for delivering nutrition education. This systematic review followed the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar were searched for studies published between 2020 and 2025. Eligible studies included digital nutrition education interventions targeting mothers of infants and young children and reported outcomes related to maternal nutrition literacy and/or child feeding practices. Due to the heterogeneity of the study designs and outcome measures, the findings were synthesized narratively. Fourteen studies were included in the review. Most were conducted in LMIC settings and involved WhatsApp-based or mobile health interventions. Digital education is generally associated with improved maternal nutrition literacy, dietary diversity, timely initiation of complementary feeding, and feeding frequency. Theory-based and interactive interventions have demonstrated stronger engagement than passive approaches. Digital nutrition education via WhatsApp and mHealth shows promising evidence for supporting maternal nutrition literacy and child feeding practices, although methodological variability warrants cautious interpretation.
