Abstract

This qualitative research aims to explore perspectives from Indonesian EFL pre-service teachers about their self-efficacy through micro-teaching video assignment. The data were collected from observation, questionnaire, and  written reflection taken from 19 participants of first, second, and third year university students in an English language education study program at one of the private universities in North Maluku. The collected data then went through thematic analysis. The results show that the students’ approaches to the instruction of creating micro-teaching are varied, while the students’ performance is influenced by limited vocabulary, grammar issues and subject matter comprehension, and finally students’ reflections include challenges and languages used in micro-teaching videos as well as their self-efficacy consisting their learnings, realizations, and beliefs. In other words, findings from current study contribute to further discussion related to teacher training courses and possible practical approaches.

Abstract

This community service aims to educate the students at MTs Negeri 1 Morotai about English paragraph writing in four English class meetings conducted twice a week. 14 eighth grader junior high school students participated throughout the whole program. The activity applied lecture and game as the teaching method with one pre-test and one post-test. The topics during four meetings included vocabulary building, sentence writing, and paragraph writing. The game integrated cards with English words with five categories such as subject, predicate, object, complement, and connectors. The result shows (1) Overall, the students experienced increased scores from the Pre-Test to Post-Test (2) More specifically, half of the participants successfully answered half of the questions right during the Post-Test (3) Furthermore, the participants of the community service shows comprehension on vocabulary building, sentence writing, and paragraph writing. However, creating new sentences and a new paragraph are still considered challenging. For the word level questions, students showed maximum pre-test scores 10/10 and 5/10 increased into post-test scores 10/10 and 9/10. While for the sentence level questions revealed maximum pre-test scores 3/5 into 5/5. In contrast, paragraph level questions are mostly left unaswered for both pre-test and post-test. In other words, the English paragraph writing community service meets the expectation and is successful to some extent.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh rendahnya kemampuan mahasiswa calon guru SD dalam merancang pembelajaran IPA yang kontekstual dan berbasis lingkungan. Padahal, pendekatan pembelajaran berbasis lingkungan penting untuk meningkatkan relevansi materi IPA dengan kehidupan siswa serta mendukung implementasi Kurikulum Merdeka. Kegiatan bertujuan meningkatkan kompetensi mahasiswa melalui pelatihan eksplorasi selama tiga hari, yang mencakup ceramah interaktif, diskusi, observasi lapangan, penyusunan perangkat ajar, dan microteaching. Pelatihan ini diikuti oleh 40 mahasiswa PGSD semester IV dan VI di Universitas Pasifik Morotai. Evaluasi dilakukan melalui pre-test dan post-test, observasi keterampilan pedagogis, serta penilaian produk RPP dan media. Hasil analisis statistik menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan pemahaman konseptual mahasiswa (rata-rata peningkatan 23,5%, p < 0,001). Mahasiswa juga menghasilkan RPP tematik dan media berbasis potensi lokal seperti daun mangrove dan batuan pantai. Kegiatan ini tidak hanya meningkatkan keterampilan teknis mahasiswa, tetapi juga membentuk sikap peduli lingkungan dan kesadaran akan pentingnya konteks lokal dalam pembelajaran IPA. Model pelatihan ini berpotensi direplikasi di wilayah lain yang memiliki karakteristik geografis serupa.

Abstract

One language that is a communication tool in various parts of the world is English; English has become a language that must be mastered by the community, especially students. However, not everyone can easily speak English. The purpose of this research is to know the level of anxiety when they speak in English at Universitas Ahmad Dahlan students. This research uses a qualitative method. One hundred and twenty seven students were selected as the participants of the questionnaire; the tool used for this study was adapted from Horwitz, Horwitz & Cope (1986) Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS). The result of this study was showed that the majority of the students (n=103) were found students had a moderate level of anxiety, one student had a very high level of anxiety and thirteen students were found to had a high level of anxiety. The level of anxiety by dimensions, such as the Fear of Negative Evaluation (FNE) ranks third. Meanwhile, Communication Apprehension (CA) and Test Anxiety (TA) are significantly dominant performance anxieties.

Abstract

English class consists of four main skills including listening, reading, speaking and writing. However, most of the time, writing has almost always received the least attention. This activity aims to introduce the English sentence writing highlighting subject-predicate-object-complement to 25 of fifth grader elementary school students throughout once a week meeting for one month in November at SDN Unggulan 1 Pulau Morotai. The methodology for this activity includes a lecture, a game using four different colors of cards with words in English and Indonesia, a game with one color of cards with words in English and Indonesia, and then a written exam quiz. The result shows that (1) Students are excited and motivated learning English writing through games (2) Students are not only excel in four different colors cards game but also in one color cards game (3) The result from quiz at the last meeting shows more than half of the students (14 out of 25 students) can answers half of the questions right, while approximately one-third of the students (8 out of 25 students) earn excellent scores. In other words, the program that had been done is impactful for students that can be seen by their understanding of English sentence writing using subject-predicate-object-complement and ability to form a correct sentence.
