Abstract

Inadequate breast milk production for newborns might result in impaired growth and development. Enhancing breast milk production can be achieved by lactation massage, a therapeutic technique including massage movements on the breast area that stimulates lymphatic and blood circulation, increases milk production, and alleviates issues related to blocked milk ducts. The applicability of this scientific findings to health services is limited; therefore, midwifery support is essential in enhancing breast milk production with lactation massage. Midwives can utilize their expertise to perform lactation massage, thereby enhancing breast milk supply and promoting the effectiveness of exclusive breastfeeding. This study aimed to ascertain the correlation between midwives' knowledge and attitudes on the enhancement of breast milk production by lactation massage. The method used was cross-sectional, and the target population consists of midwives attending Harapan Bersama Polytechnic. Utilizing a total sampling technique involving 11 individuals. Data were acquired by surveys and subsequently analyzed using the chi-square method. The study's results yielded a P value of 0.04 (α0.05), indicating a correlation between midwives' knowledge and attitudes on the enhancement of breast milk supply via lactation massage, with an odds ratio of 0.33. Midwives' knowledge and abilities must be improved in order to use lactation massage to boost the supply of breast milk.

Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem that will directly affect the quality of human resources in the future. One of the contributing factors to stunting is anemia during pregnancy, which often originates from adolescence. Early detection of anemia in women of reproductive age is a crucial preventive measure to reduce the risk of stunting. This study aims to develop an anemia classification model based on conjunctival images using a combination of MobileNetV2 architecture and Support Vector Machine (SVM), and to implement the model into a mobile application named CeSLA (Cegah Stunting Lewat Anemia). The model was built using a dataset of female conjunctival images annotated based on haemoglobin levels and visual characteristics of the conjunctiva. Evaluation results explain that the model achieved precision, recall, and f1-score values ranging from 0.91 to 0.92 for each class, with a macro average of 0.92, indicating accurate and balanced classification performance. The trained and evaluated model was then integrated into the CeSLA mobile application. This application allows users, particularly adolescent girls, to detect potential anemia non-invasively by scanning the lower eyelid using a smartphone camera. CeSLA is also equipped with educational features such as health articles and a detection history log. With this approach, CeSLA is expected to serve as an innovative solution that supports early, self-administered anemia detection and contributes to the national effort to prevent stunting.

Abstract

Background: Correctional institutions had made efforts to provide supplemental nutrition for pregnant inmates. This study examined how incarcerated pregnant women understand and respond to the nutritional conditions they face, with particular attention to their perceptions, attitudes, and sense of agency in meeting their dietary needs during imprisonment. Methods: A qualitative phenomenological approach was used. Between January and March 2024, data were collected through in-depth interviews and participant observation with six pregnant inmates in a women’s correctional facility in Indonesia. Thematic analysis was then conducted to identify key patterns and meanings in their experiences. Results: The analysis identified two main themes: Perceptions and Experiences About Nutrition and Strategies to Meet Nutritional Needs. Participants viewed prison food as inadequate and often inappropriate for pregnancy, with some expressing feelings of being uncared for. Food was also linked to moral and emotional meanings, including shame and judgment. To cope, women adopted informal strategies such as food sharing, small jobs, or saving money. However, limited nutritional knowledge influenced their choices, leading to misconceptions about what foods were healthy or suitable during pregnancy. Conclusion: These findings suggest that supporting pregnant inmates’ nutritional needs requires more than simply providing food. Emotional, cultural, and social factors should be considered in designing interventions. Collaborative programs, such as group prenatal classes or discussion forums, supported by culturally sensitive educational materials, and policies that support collaboration between prisons, healthcare providers, and community organizations, can help promote healthier behaviors and better support the well-being of pregnant women in custody.

Abstract

During the Covid-19 pandemic, maternal and neonatal death still becomes a challenging issue in Indonesia, especially since there was a social restriction on maternal and newborn health services. Pregnant women are advised to perform a pregnancy check-up during the pandemic, but most are reluctant due to afraid of being infected with the virus. The health belief model is used to analyze the assessment of individual health actions. The study aimed to determine the relation of the health belief model in antenatal examinations during the covid-19 pandemic. This research was a quantitative study with a cross-sectional approach. The population was whole pregnant women in the Dukuhwaru Health Center as many as 208 people. About 53 people sample recruited using accidental sampling techniques. Independent variables include perceptions of vulnerability, perceptions of seriousness, perception of threats, perception of benefits, perception of obstacles, and cues to action, while the dependent variables are the regularity of pregnant women in conducting antenatal care examinations. Data was collected through questionnaires and analyzed using Fisher's Exact test. The results showed that there was a relationship between the perception of seriousness (p=0.03), perception of threat (p=0.000), and perception of obstacles (p=0.04) with the regularity of antenatal checks. However, there was no significant correlation between perception of susceptibility (p=0.46), perception of benefit (p=0.07), and cues for action (p=1) to the regularity of antenatal checks. 3 out of 6 of the health belief model factors were related to the regularity of antenatal checks. The regularity of antenatal visits on the incidence of Covid-19 needs to be explored in subsequent studies.

Abstract

The problem of concurrent stunting and overweight (COS) in children has a low prevalence and is often overlooked. Children with COS are at increased risk for stunted growth and development and non-communicable diseases. Therefore, a preliminary review was conducted to identify the causes of COS in children under five years of age. A narrative review of the literature was conducted by searching the Scopus database using the keywords "concurrent stunting and overweight", "stunting and obesity", and "double burden of malnutrition", and 6 relevant articles were identified. Several important themes emerged from the literature review, namely maternal conditions during pregnancy and lactation, child feeding practices, completeness of immunization status, and household conditions and socio-demographics
