Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study was conducted to analyze about the use of linguistic features inadvertisement. The data sources of this study were used advertisements of submission for newstudent in several universities in Bali especially for the academic year 2018/2019. Then,observations with note taking technique were applied in collecting the data. The data wereanalyzed qualitatively using the theory of semiotic by Barthes (1998) and theory from Leech(1966) about English Advertising. The data presented in the form of formal and non-formal.The results of the analysis found that these kinds of advertisements used linguistic features aswell to give information about the campus itself and also to attract the attention from the targetmarket so they will have a good opinion about the campus and finally choose one of thecampuses to continue their study. The linguistic features in this type of advertisements can beanalyzed in several terms, those are: 1) lexical choice, the advertiser mostly used verb andadjective. 2) There were four types of sentence structure found namely declarative,interrogative, imperative and exclamative sentence. Declarative sentence is more dominantthan other. 3) It also used abbreviation and acronym which has a correlation with the context.Key words: advertising, linguistic fitur, verbal signABSTRAKPenelitian ini dilakukan dengan tujuan menganalisis tentang fitur-fitur linguistik dalamiklan. Sumber data yang digunakan adalah iklan penerimaan mahasiswa baru di Bali untuktahun akademik 2018/2019. Metode observasi dan teknik mencatat digunakan dalampengumpulan data. Data yang sudah terkumpul dianalisis secara kualitatif menggunakan teoritentang Semiotic dari Barthes (1998) dan teori tentang English Advertising dari Leech (1966).Data disajikan dalam bentuk formal dan non- formal. Hasil analisis memeperlihatkan bahwa,jenis iklan ini menggunakan fitur-fitur linguistik dengan baik untuk memberikan informasitentang keberadaan masing-masing kampus, dan juga menarik perhatian pembaca sehinggamemiliki opini yang baik tentang kampus yang diiklankan dan memilih kampus tersebut untukmelanjutkan studi. Adapun jenis-jenis fitur linguistik yang ditemukan adalah: 1) dalampemilihan kata, pembuat iklan lebih banyak menggunakan kata kerja dan kata sifatdibandingkan dengan jenis kata lainnya. 2) Iklan penerimaan mahasiswa baru menggunakanempat jenis kalimat secara berkesinambungan dalam iklan yaitu kalimat berita, kalimat tanya,kalimat perintah, dan kalimat seru dan penggunaan jenis kalimat berita mendominasi diantarajenis kalimat lainnya. 3) dalam iklan juga ditemukan penggunaan akronim dan singkatan yangterkadang menimbulkan kebingungan bagi pembaca karena membutuhkan pemikiran yanglebih lanjut dan memperhatikan korelasi dengan kontekksnya untuk memahami makna darimasing-masing singkatan dan akronim.Kata Kunci : iklan, fitur linguistic, tanda verbal

Abstract

This study discussed the directive illocutionary act in Venom: Let There Be Carnage. It evaluates how all characters in the movie convey directive illocutionary acts. This study aims to find out the types of directive illocutionary acts. The data were collected using the observation method. The data is collected by watching the movie repeatedly while checking the conversation in the transcript and determining the utterance that contained a directive illocutionary act. Then, classify the utterance of the directive illocutionary act into three: command, request, and suggestions based on the theory by Kreidler (1998). In analyzing the data, the writer used the qualitative method. As a result, the writer found all types of directive illocutionary acts according to the theory from Kreidler (1998). There were 82 data found, and the most type of directive illocutionary act occurred was command with 51 data, request 23 data and suggestion 8 data.

Abstract

This research is entitled Connotative meaning of verbal and visual sign in “What Can’t Milk Do?” Advertisement. This study is conducted with the aims to analysed the connotative meaning of verbal and visual signs contain in “What Can’t Milk Do?” advertisement. Verbal and visual communication tools that are used by human to interact, whether through messages, sounds, pictures, and gestures. The data were taken from the YouTube platform. The data were collected by observation method. The analysis was done by the descriptive qualitative method. The study started by analysing verbal and visual signs which is based on the theory of semiotic by Saussure (1893). Then, the analysis of the connotative meaning of the verbal and visual signs was done by using the theory of meaning proposed by Barthes (1977). In addition, the study of colors was done using the approach of color term submitted by Wierzbicka (1996). The connotative meaning from this advertisement want to remind the viewers that milk is not only just an ordinary beverage but it can turn you into a morning person and get you through tough tasks, while also forming the basis for everything from health-conscious food or to decadent desserts and from the advertisement we can found verbal and non-verbal sign and the meaning of an advertisement.

Abstract

This study focused in analyzing the illocutionary act found in Justice Movie. The aims of this study are to identify types of illocutionary acts that found in Justice Movie and to analyzed contexts of situation that found in Justice Movie point to the meaning of illocutionary acts. This study employed descriptive and qualitative method. The data of this study were obtained by watching and Note-taking the utterances which contained in illocutionary acts in Justice Movie. The researcher used two theories to analyze the data in this research, the first theory is from Yule (1996) to find out the types of expressive illocutionary acts in the Justice Movie, the second is the theory that proposed by Halliday and Hassan (1989) about the context of situation. There are 13 data of expressive illocutionary act found in Justice Movie such as, complimenting (3), praising (1), sorrow (2), welcome (1), blaming (1), apologizing (2), pleasure (1), dislike (1) and thanking (2).

Abstract

The article embarks on an in-depth exploration of the diverse directive illocutionary acts depicted in the 2021 film "The Guilty." Its primary aim lies in meticulously analyzing and categorizing the instances of directive illocutionary acts portrayed by the characters throughout the movie, drawing data from their dialogues and interactions. Guided by the theoretical framework of Searle and Vanderveken, the research employs a qualitative descriptive methodology to dissect the nuances of each directive illocutionary act, revealing four distinct types prevalent in the film: commands, requests, advice, and asks. With a total of 44 instances identified, including 25 commands, 12 requests, 4 instances of advice, and 3 asks, this thorough examination not only sheds light on the prevalence of directive illocutionary acts within "The Guilty" but also underscores their significance in shaping interpersonal dynamics and propelling the narrative forward.

Abstract

This study analyzes the figurative language used in the song lyrics of Adele’s album “30”. The song writer plays words and language to create attraction and distinctiveness towards the lyric of the song. Figurative language has the ability to be more impactful for the readers. This study is aimed to answer two problems of the study, they are: (1) To identify the types of figurative language used in the song lyrics of Adele's album "30". (2) To analyze the meaning of figurative language found in the song lyrics of Adele's album “30”. The data was analyzed based on the theory of figurative language proposed by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1974) and theory of Meaning proposed by Geoffrey Leech (1974).The result of this study showed there are 7 types of figurative language found in Adele’s album “30”. They are simile, personification, metaphor, synecdoche, hyperbole, irony and paradox. This study found 3 simile, 2 personification, 4 metaphor, 2 synecdoche, 13 hyperbole, 1 irony and 3 paradox. And otherwise in analyzing the contextual meaning this study found some types of meaning used in lyrics of song, those are connotative meaning, thematic meaning, affective meaning, reflected meaning, and stylistic meaning. The data were presented descriptively and formally by using some tables.

Abstract

The objective of this study focus on types of comparative figurative language in the poem Maya Angeluo and their meaning. In resolving the problem of the study. The study for analyzed used the theory from Kennedy (1983), with the book entitled Literature: An introduction to Fiction : Poetry and Drama, and the theory of meaning ussed from Leech (1981), with the book entitled semantics : The study of Meaning. this study was used to describe the meaning of the types figurative language found in Maya Angeluo poems. This study used the data source from Maya Angeluo poems. Documentation method was used to collect data. This study used qualitative descriptive method has beed used to describe the data to analyzed the data, whereeas formal and informal method has been used to present the finding. There was found 21 data of types figurative language from 12 in poem Maya Angleuo. The meaning of those 21 comparative figurative language was describe useing the theory of Leech (1981). Abstract

Illocutionary act refers to an act of doing something. This study was focused on the types of illocutionary act that found in the movie entitled Spider-Man: No Way Home. This study applied descriptive qualitative method in conducting the research. The library research was also used to collect the research data. In analyzing the data, the theory that proposed by Searle (1976) was applied in identifying the types of illocutionary act in the movie. Based on the results of this study, there were 100 data of illocutionary act that can be divided into 34 (34%) data of assertive act, 18 (18%) data of directive act, 24 (24%) data of commissive act, 22 (22%) data of expressive act, and 2 (2%) data of declarative act. The most dominant illocutionary act that occurred in this movie was assertive act.

Abstract

The chosen movie series Peacemaker are the subject of the investigation, this study entitled “Speech Act Analysis of Greeting Form found in Peacemaker Movie Series” the study focused on greeting utterance produced by each characters in the Peacemaker movie series and concerns with the illocutionary acts that occur in the character’s utterance. It is aimed (1) to find out the types of illocutionary acts in the Peacemaker movie series, and (2) to analyze the function and meaning of the illocutionary act produced by the characters in the movie series. This study used descriptive qualitative method inanalyze the types and the function and meaning of illocutionary acts proposed by theory from Searle’s (1979). The result of this study showed that most of the data are expressive illocutionary act, second is followed with directive illocutionary act and the last is declarative illocutionary act that found in the Peacemaker movie series, in greeting utterance is hard to found greeting utterance that consist with assertive illocutionary act and commissive illocutionary act. The study conclude that the speaker has reason when they need someone to do the action through their greeting utterance. People are not only producing the greeting utterance to communicate but from the greeting utterance also has purpose they want to deliver to the hearer in purpose to understand the meaning of the greetings itself in directform or indirect form. Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the types figurative language found in English Slogan beverage advertisements, especially about the types and meanings of figurative language that contained in English Slogan. The problem discussed in this study are (1) what types of figurative language found in English Slogan of beverage advertisements, and (2) how the meaning of the figurative language that contained in English sloganof beverage advertisements. Thus, in analyzes the data the researcher used the descriptive qualitative method by using theory proposed by Kennedy (1983) and Leech (1981). As the result of this analysis the researcher found that are 4 types of figurative language in English slogan of beverage advertisements. They are: comparative 14 data or 48,28%, contradictive 9 data or 31,03%, and correlative 6 data or 20,69%. Comparative figurative language consists of Personification, Metaphor and Simile. Contradictive figurative language consists of Hyperbole, Litotes, Paradox and Irony. Correlative language consists of Metonymy, Synechdoche, Symbol, Allusion and Elipsis. For the meaning of the figurative language contained in English slogan of beverage advertisements the researcher found 2 types of meaning, such as; conceptual meaning 1 data or 20% and the connotative meaning 4 data or 80%.
