Abstract

Abstract Language is an important aspect of communication that is used to interact, speak, and express feelings. Expressive speech acts are typically the facets of speech acts commonly employed in communication. This study examines the significance of expressive illocutionary acts in human communication, focusing specifically on the Night School movie. This study applies a qualitative descriptive approach. In this study, the concept of expressive illocutionary acts proposed by Searle (1979) is used as a theoretical framework that guides the investigations carried out. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the various expressive illocutionary acts performed by the characters in the Night School movie. The findings reveal six types of expressive illocutionary acts: thanking, apologizing, congratulating, wishing, attitude, and greeting. Through the application of pragmatics, the study offers insights into the interpretation and understanding of the communicative events within the film, highlighting the importance of expressive illocutionary acts in conveying emotions and shaping interpersonal dynamics. This research contributes to the broader field of pragmatics and provides a framework for analyzing expressive illocutionary acts in film. Abstract

Politeness has always been one of the primary linguistics issues. The objectives of this research were centered on identifying the varieties of politeness maxims utilized by characters in the 2022 adaptation of the film "Lady Chatterley's Lover." The primary focus of this inquiry was to examine the employed politeness maxims exclusively within the dialogues among the characters. The researcher detailed and assessed both the quantity and prevalence of distinct politeness maxims within the film. For analysis, a qualitative approach was employed, drawing on Leech's (1983) theory that delineates six categories of politeness maxims. The data were gathered through observational means from the British romantic movie titled "Lady Chatterley's Lover" released in 2022. The findings of this investigation exhibit the presence of six distinct classes of applied politeness maxims throughout the movie. The study's outcomes reveal a total of 48 instances categorized as follows: 12 instances of tact maxim, 10 instances of generosity maxim, 8 instances of approbation maxim, 5 instances of modesty maxim, 7 instances of agreement maxim, and 6 instances of sympathy maxim. The highest frequency was observed in the tact maxim category, with 12 instances, signifying its predominant utilization among the characters in the movie.

Abstract

A complaint is an expression of dissatisfaction about an act, omission, decision, or service that expects of the feedback given by the user. This study focuses on an interaction between customer and server: Western Café In Canggu strongly conveys the interaction using speech act categories. The objective of this study is to ascertain the many classifications of speech acts employed within the context of interactions between restaurant customers and servers. The method and technique used to capture data for this study were qualitative analysis and note-taking. Furthermore, the data were analyzed by using theory: Searle’s theory of speech act (1969) and Austin (1962) is used to define and classify the categories of speech act used by the server and customer. The findings show from every interaction that guest and server made and expressing of directive and expressive. Directive point is the most common illocutionary act used in conversation that how make easier the hearer to understand what the speaker mean.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze command in directive illocutionary acts and the types and intentions of the command depending on the context found in the movie entitled Missing (2023). This qualitative quantitative research applies the theory proposed by Searle & Vanderveken (1985) for data analysis. In presenting the data, this study used formal and informal methods. The result shows that the amount of command in directive illocutionary act is 63 utterances with the details: utterance by June 17 (27%), Dad 13 (21%), Mom 12 (19%), Police 7 (11%), Veena 3 (5%), US Embassy 3 (5%), Javi 3 (5%), Kevin 2 (3%), Girl 1 (2%), Gomes 1 (2%), 911 Dispatcher 1 (2%). June as the main character becomes a person with the most frequently utters Command Directive Illocutionary Act in this movie.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis keterlambatan proses pemerolehan bahasa anak dalam tataran fonetiknya dan menganalisis faktor yang menyebabkan anak tersebut mengalami gejala keterlambatan berbahasa. Sumber data penelitian ini adalah tiga orang anak dengan rentang usia 2-3 tahun yang memiliki gejala keterlambatan dalam berbicara. Jenis kelamin dari ketiga sumber data adalah satu orang anak perempuan dan dua orang anak laki-laki. Pengumpulan data menggunakan metode observasi dan teknik catat, rekam dan wawancara. Tahap analisis data di dalam penelitian ini melalui tiga tahap, yakni tahap reduksi, penyajian, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa jumlah kosa kata yang dimiliki oleh ketiga anak tersebut masih terbatas karena hanya menggunakan satu kata dan masih kesulitan untuk menggunakan dua padanan kata atau lebih dalam berkomunikasi. Pada saat bertutur, ketiga responden masih kurang jelas melafalkan beberapa fonem tertentu dan dalam melafalkan satu kata ketiga anak menggunakan proses penghilangan fonem, penggantian fonem dan penambahan fonem. Keterlambatan dalam pemerolehan bahasa ketiga anak tersebut disebabkan oleh faktor eksternal yang berhubungan dengan lingkungan dan teknologi.

Abstract

This study aims to delineate the categories of assertive illocutionary acts that are present in the state speech of President Joe Biden. Searle's (1979) classification of illocutionary acts was implemented by the researcher in this study. The data analyzed in this research is qualitative descriptive, as the results may be presented in the form of sentences or words. President Joe Biden's 2024 State of the Union Address and assertive illocutionary acts serve as the focus of this study. From the data sources of this research, the researcher was able to identify five distinct classifications of assertive illocutionary acts. This research found 51 data of assertive illocutionary acts in President Joe Biden’s state speech. In addition, the most dominant classification of assertives that was found in the data source is informing with 20 (39,21%) occurrences followed by stating with 14 (27,45%) occurrences, asserting with 11 (21,56%), boasting with 4 (7,84%). The least dominant types of assertive illocutionary act that was found namely; complaining with 2 (3,92%) occurrences. The Informing type is said to be the most dominant because speakers provide information to their listeners more often than conveying ordinary things. Additionally, the speaker's meaning has been interpreted in accordance with the circumstances in which the utterance was delivered. Additional advantages of this research include the enhancement of listeners' confidence and enthusiasm for the speaker.

Abstract

This research aimed about the types of illocutionary acts found in After movie. The researcher used the theory from Searle (1976) in order to find out the types of illocutionary acts. Meanwhile, to analyze the meaning based on the context of situation, the researcher used the theory from Halliday and Hassan (1985). The main data source of this study is After movie. Observation method and note taking technique are used in this study to collect the data. This study used descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the types of illocutionary acts and the meaning based on the context of situation. In this research there are 27 data were found in After movie. All the types of illocutionary acts were found in this research which are Assertive, Directive, Commissive, Expressive and Declarative. Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the types of illocutionary acts and the context of situations in each utterance within the Maleficent movie. The study is grounded in Searle's (1979) theory on illocutionary act types and Halliday and Hasan's (1989) theory on situational context. The analysis was carried out using a descriptive qualitative approach. To gather the data, the researcher employed an observation method, which involved watching the Maleficent movie multiple times and taking notes on the main characters' utterances. After gathering the data, the researcher analyzed it in a series of procedures, including categorizing the illocutionary acts by kind and determining the context of each situation. The results of this investigation revealed 39 utterances that suggest illocutionary acts. The following is the result of this study: directives have the highest frequency of occurrence (30.8 %) with 12 utterances. It is followed by commissive (11 utterances, 28.2%), assertive (10 utterances, 25.6%), expressives (4 utterances, 10.3%), and declaratives (2 utterances, 5.1%).

Abstract

This study aims to identify the different types of directive speech acts in The Expendables 2movie, focusing on the main character, Barney Ross. The data were analyzed used theory from Searle and Vandervaken (1985). This study used qualitatively to gather and interpret data from the movie's conversations. The study uses an observation method to collect data. This involves watching the movie and examining the script to identify various types of directive speech acts. The process involves reading and note-taking to analyze these acts, uncovering four types of directive speech acts: commands, requests, advice, and questions. Out of 37 instances identified, there were 32 (86.49%) commands, 2 (5.41%) requests, 2 (5.41%) pieces of advice, and 1 (2.70%) question. The findings show that commands are the most prevalent type of directive speech act in the movie.

Abstract

The study aims to identify the many types of figurative language found in Madison Beer's album Life Support. Knickerbocker and Reninger's (1974) theory was employed to determine the figurative language found in Madison Beer's album Life Support. The information was gathered through downloading and listening to each song on the Life Support album, as well as reading up and taking notes on the lyrics. The data were analyzed using a qualitative method. Madison Beer's Life Support album contains eight out of ten types of figurative language, according to the study's findings. There are 12 data in simile, four data in personification, metaphor, irony, and metonymy, three data in synecdoche, and two data in each type of metaphor and paradox. A simile with 12 facts is the most prevalent figurative language used in Madison Beer's Life Support Album.
