Abstract

In Indonesian context, as the 2013 Curriculum (K-13) has been introduced to EFL teachers to be implemented at schools, performance-based assessment starts to be applied at schools too, accompanying the curriculum implementation. This educational reform is meant to improve the quality of the teaching of English as a foreign language. However, little is known in the body of knowledge on EFL teachers’ challenges in implementing the authentic performance-based assessment in K-13 context, one of which, it was argued, is a facet that derives from EFL teachers’ conception on matters pertaining to authentic assessment. To address this, a survey was conducted to find out EFL teachers’ conceptions about authentic assessment, the role of feedback, and use of authentic assessment procedures in the context of such K-13 educational reform. A number of EFL teachers at lower and upper secondary levels of education in East Java across seniority were involved in the present survey. The findings of the study reveal among other things interesting phenomena where contradictions of conceptions were observed on authentic assessment. These findings have pedagogical implications that are educationally beneficial for the proper and successful implementation of authentic assessment under the 2013 curriculum – K-13.DOI: 10.26905/enjourme.v7i1.7018

Abstract: This study aims to find out the strategies used by tertiary level students in performing English communication. This research was a descriptive study involving English Education Study Program students. Data analysis included in-depth transcribing on the students’ speaking performance and the result of interview. The findings show that the communication strategies used in the conversation consisted of avoidance, paraphrase, borrowing, appeal for assistance, and mime. The common strategy lied on mime, while avoidance and paraphrase strategies were not frequently applied. The results show communication strategies were effective in helping the first language students in learning English as their foreign language. Communication strategies give solution to cope with difficulties in learning English. Abstract

During the current pandemic, some schools have to implement hybrid learning, where some students come to school, and some have to go online. After the teacher gave the learning materials, some students who took online classes still did not understand it was different from students who took offline classes. The research used the qualitative method. The data was collected from 33 students in the 7b class and ten selected students based on their descriptive English writing text. It is revealed that the students have achieved reasonable control in writing descriptive text. However, in terms of writing, some students make spelling mistakes, and the use of tenses still needs more understanding. The result showed that the difficulties of descriptive writing are spelling, tenses, punctuation, sentence pattern, pronoun, conjunction, and preposition. They must consider schematic structures and use the appropriate language. Thus, their text will be well-organized and understandable.

Because, English is one of the subjects considered difficult by elementary school students, especially in rural areas. This research was conducted at elementary school in Tulungagung, East Java which is a rural area. This study also uses the self-study method, in which data are taken from observations and interviews with English teachers in schools to find out the difficulties or challenges in teaching and learning in rural schools, Therefore, the self-study researcher is not the self who does the research, but rather the self being studied, not that the self is the only focus. This progression in self-study characterizes teaching as well. So after that, the author compiled this conversation program. Abstract

This study aims to determine whether there is a difference between the learning outcomes of English vocabulary improvement in descriptive text learning for students before and after the Gamification method is applied. The subjects of this study were 41 students of MTS Muhammadiyah 1 Taman. Data collection using tests in the form of multiple choice and essay to measure learning outcomes in English vocabulary improvement. The method used is quantitative method, data analysis using paired sample t test. The results show that the mean score of the post-test is higher than the mean score of the pre-test, this means that there is an increase in learning outcomes of English vocabulary after the Gamification method is applied, the results also show that the significance obtained is 0.000, which is smaller than 0.05, thus Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. This means that there is a significant difference between the learning outcomes of English vocabulary in descriptive text learning before and after the implementation of learning strategies using the Gamification method.

Abstract

Students study in a variety of ways or styles. Understanding and learning challenges may be impacted by this learning style. One of the numerous types of research is on learning style. Student’s learning styles and diverse learning methods might help them become better writers in English. This research aims to demonstrate how students' learning styles and the development of their writing skill are related. The participants in this research are VIII-A graders at one of the Muhammadiyah private schools in Sidoarjo. This correlation study used a Likert scale questionnaire as the instrument. The answers to the questionnaire were then connected with the students' writing scores using a quantitative research strategy and the correlation with IBM SPSS 26. The researchers found that the result of testing the hypothesis (rcount) was 0.641 and the score (rtable) was 0.515 indicating that the score of rcount>rtable was 0.641>0.515. This means that Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected which has a positive meaning or there is a significant relationship between students' visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles and students' writing skill. This study implies that each student has certain learning style so that in the classroom instruction the teachers need to be aware their different characteristics to optimize the students’ learning outcomes including in English writing class
