Abstract

This study aims to analyze the translation of the meaning and aesthetics of the subtitles of the drama When We Were Young (人不彪悍枉少年) aired on the YouTube channel WeTV Indonesia, as well as discuss the translation of this drama as a literary work. The main focus of this study is to understand how the translator overcame linguistic and cultural challenges in translating the dialog-drama which is full of Chinese idioms and cultural expressions into Indonesian. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design to analyze the subtitle texts. The data used are purposively selected drama subtitles from several episodes that contain idiomatic and metaphorical elements. Literary translation theories, such as equivalence theory by Nida (1964), domestication vs. foreignization theory by Venuti (1995), and audiovisual translation theory by Gottlieb (1994), are applied in this analysis to explore how translators balance between fidelity to the source text and the limitations of subtitle space. The study found that translators often adopt a domestication approach to ease the understanding of Indonesian audiences, while still trying to maintain the original aesthetics and cultural nuances of the source text. The findings make an important contribution to the study of literary translation, especially in the context of audiovisual translation which requires attention to linguistic and cultural aspects simultaneously.

Abstract

This study investigates the representation of Chinese patriarchal culture through linguistic expressions in Disney’s 2020 live-action film Mulan. Employing a descriptive-qualitative method and grounded in a sociolinguistic framework, particularly the intersection of language and gender, this research analyzes how patriarchal values are encoded in character dialogue. A relational analysis approach, informed by gender and family relation theories, reveals distinct speech patterns between male and female characters. Male characters predominantly use declarative and evaluative speech acts characterized by positive metaphorical expressions, signifying authority and affirmation within the societal hierarchy. Conversely, female characters’ utterances are largely expressive and commissive in nature, often marked by negative metaphors, reflecting marginalization and constrained agency. The findings suggest that patriarchal cultural norms continue to shape social expectations and restrict women’s participation in the public sphere. Within the narrative, gender roles are assigned based on biological sex rather than individual competence or evolving social identities, underscoring the persistence of gender-based power asymmetries in Chinese patriarchal discourse.

Abstract

Mandarin Chinese directional complements present a significant and well-documented challenge for Indonesian learners. This study delves into the intricacies of this grammatical aspect, aiming to identify the specific difficulties encountered by Indonesian students and to propose effective pedagogical strategies. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, beginning with a comparative linguistic analysis of complement expression in both Mandarin Chinese and Indonesian to pinpoint potential areas of linguistic interference. Subsequently, a questionnaire is administered to Indonesian students learning Mandarin to gather empirical data on their comprehension and application of directional complements. Furthermore, a detailed error analysis is conducted on student-produced language samples, focusing specifically on the use of “来/去” (lái/qù) and other directional complement structures. The findings of this study illuminate the multifaceted reasons behind the observed errors, encompassing negative transfer from the learners' first language, individual learner variables such as learning styles and aptitude, environmental factors influencing language acquisition, and the potential inadequacies of current teaching materials and methodologies. Ultimately, this research culminates in the formulation of targeted teaching suggestions and practical methods designed to mitigate these challenges and enhance the learning experience for Indonesian students striving to master Chinese directional complements.

Abstract

This study aims to explore and measure the effectiveness of instructional materials based on job interview simulations in improving students’ Mandarin speaking skills, particularly as a systematic and contextual preparation for the selection process of the Certified Internship and Independent Study Program (MSIB) under the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) scheme. A mixed-method approach was employed, combining qualitative and quantitative techniques. Qualitative data were collected through classroom observation and students’ verbal responses during simulations, while quantitative data were obtained from pretests and posttests. Initial findings showed that students struggled to comprehend interview questions and provide coherent, appropriate answers. After the simulation sessions, significant improvements were observed in fluency, word choice, intonation, and contextual understanding and response. These results emphasize the urgency of integrating simulation-based learning into Mandarin speaking instruction to prepare students for professional communication in the workplace. This article recommends applying a similar model in other foreign language programs and suggests the development of interactive and adaptive digital instructional resources.

Abstract

Mandarin Chinese is one of the languages that uses a tonal system, errors in tone pronunciation can lead to differences in meaning. Pronunciation differences can be directly perceived by experts, but with the advancement of technology today, detailed differences can be observed through sound processing programs or applications. This study uses PRAAT as an auxiliary sound processing tool, which can display pitch curves of voices and show the frequencies used to analyze tone pronunciation. The subjects of this study are undergraduate students from the class of 2024 of the Mandarin Language Education program at UNNES, at the beginner level. The study uses a descriptive quantitative approach, with the tone pronunciation analysis results of native speakers used as a comparison to the students' tone pronunciations. Data collection techniques in this research include observation, recording field notes, and documentation. The results of this study show that 19.19% of students pronounced tone 1 with a rising frequency, 22.7% of students pronounced tone 2 with a low frequency difference, making it sound similar to tone 1, and more than 93% of students pronounced tone 4 with a high frequency spike. This research is expected to provide a reference for developers of technology-based language learning applications to improve pronunciation analysis features. In addition, it is hoped that this research can contribute to the field of phonetics and serve as a reference for similar studies.

The significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.008 indicates that the correlation results are statistically significant. In hypothesis testing, since the sig value (0.008) is smaller than 0.05, there is a significant relationship between learning motivation and learning outcomes. This, the data shows that there is a  relationship between learning motivation and learning outcomes in Chinese Language Education students class of 2022 at Semarang State University in the Chuji Hanyu Xiezuo Xia course. Abstract

This study aims to analyze the need for Mandarin language skills to support work communication in the tire manufacturing industry, with a case study at PT Sailun Manufacturing Indonesia. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, with data collection techniques including observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of this study show that communication between local employees and Chinese supervisors is mostly conducted directly with the help of translators, as well as using alternatives such as Google Translate and hand gestures. However, these methods are not yet fully effective due to limited internet signal in the machine area and the suboptimal use of hand gestures in conveying detailed messages. The main challenge faced is the limited Mandarin proficiency of local employees, especially in speaking, listening, and reading skills. An effective strategy to overcome these challenges is Mandarin language training accompanied by individual learning motivation. These findings emphasize that mastering Mandarin is an essential need in a multinational work environment to improve communication effectiveness and work productivity.
