Abstract

This study aims to investigate the thermal properties of grafted products of maleic anhydride onto cyclized natural rubber. The grafting was carried out in the melt phase at an internal mixer of 150 oC and a rotor speed of 80 rpm. A total of 16 phr maleic anhydride was reacted with cyclized natural rubber in the present and absence of divinylbenzene comonomer with various mole ratios: 0.5, 1, and 2. The grafted products were characterized by the thermogravimetric method to investigate their thermal properties. Based on the results of the thermogravimetric analysis, it was shown that the sample increased its thermal stability. The sample decomposes at a higher temperature with the increasing mole ratio of divinylbenzene added. The grafted product with 16 phr maleic anhydride decomposed at 489.41 oC. Then, the graft product samples with the addition of 0.5, 1, and the 2-mole ratio of divinylbenzene comonomers decomposed at: 501.62 oC, 514.39 oC, and 520.82 oC, respectively. Keywords:Cyclized natural rubber, Divinylbenzene, Maleic anhydride, Thermamogravimetric

Abstract

Plastic waste takes up to 450 years to decompose. These problems can be overcome by creating other alternatives, one of which is by using biodegradable plastic. Biodegradable plastics are plastics made from natural polymers that are easily degraded by microorganisms. This study aims to examine the effect of the amount of plasticizer on the length of the degradation process and the effect of using microwaves on the length of time for molding biodegradable plastic. This biodegradable plastic is made by combining durian seed starch, shrimp chitosan and plasticizers in the form of glycerol and polyglycerol with volume variations of 1 mL, 2 mL, 3 mL, 4 mL, and 5 mL. This polymerization was carried out using a microwave with a power of 100 watts for 60 minutes. The resulting biodegradable plastics were characterized using the FTIR test, the Mechanical Properties test, the Absorbency test, and the Biodegradation test to determine the quality of the biodegradable plastic. The results of this study indicate the greatest tensile strength value is 1.9768 MPa, the largest elongation value is 21.2772%, the smallest water absorption is 45.40% for 5 minutes, and the largest degraded mass is 0.908 grams for 7 days. Based on this research, it can be concluded that the use of polyglycerol can accelerate the plastic degradation process. In addition, the use of microwaves can speed up the molding time of biodegradable plastics. Keywords: Biodegradable plastic, Durian seed starch, Shrimp chitosan, Glycerol, Microwaves

Abstract

Abstract

Modification  has been carried out through a cyclization process using an organic solvent of Xylene in the various of concentration of P2O5 as a  Lewis Acid catalyst followed by the grafting process of Maleic Anhydride (MA) monomer using dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as the initiator. The success of the cyclization process of CNR formation can be seen from the FTIR analysis which shows typical peaks at the absorption wave of 741 cm-1 from the CH2 – CH2 cyclical strain vibration and a wavelength of 835 cm-1 from the non-cyclical strain vibration CH2 – CH2 indicating that cyclization has occurred. Furthermore, on the results of grafting, FTIR analysis was carried out to prove that the MA had been grafted on the Cyclic Natural rubber (CNR) so that the formation of CNR-g-MA as shown of the C=O wave number which was on wave number 1710 cm-1 and 1850 cm-1.

Abstract

Research on the use of modified bentonite from Bener Meriah Aceh to study the morphology and thermal properties of polypropylene-montmorillonite nanocomposite (PP-MMT) was carried out. Bentonite was isolated into nano-sized montmorillonite and modified with the addition of PP-g-MA as a compatibilizer and octadecylamine as a modifier of MMT. PP-MMT nanocomposite processing was carried out in an internal mixer at 180 oC with a time of 10 minutes, and a speed of 65 rpm. Based on the results of the TGA-DTA test, the modified bentonite from Bener Meriah Aceh with PP-g-MA and octadecylamine can improve the thermal properties of PP-MMT nanocomposite in a composition comparison of  PP; PP-g-MA; MMT is 85; 10; 5. The SEM test results also showed that exfoliation and intercalation had occurred of MMT at PP-MMT nanocomposite.
