Abstract

This study aimed to examine the changes in the chemical properties of dryland Entisols upon the application of liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) from tofu waste and biochar, especially the content of C-organic, total N, total P, and P2O5 (available P), and the yield of pak choi. This study used a completely randomized factorial design. The first factor was the dose of tofu waste LOF (100, 200, and 300 ml/L water) and the second factor was the type of biochar (soil+rice husk biochar, soil+sawdust biochar, soil+rice husk biochar+ sawdust biochar). The combination of tofu waste LOF (100 ml/L) and the mixture of rice husk biochar and sawdust biochar (1:1:1) resulted in the most significant increase in C-organic (7.37%), total N (0.61%), total P (178.01 mg/100 g), and P2O5 (157.23 ppm) compared to other treatments. However, at a high dose of tofu waste LOF (300 ml/L of water), the contents of C-organic, total N, total P, and P2O5 tended to decrease, presumably due to the low pH of the tofu waste LOF. In terms of plant parameters, rice husk biochar treatment was the best for increasing the fresh weight of the shoots. This indicates that the optimal combination of LOF and biochar improved the chemical properties of Entisol analyzed after harvesting but did not increase the yield of pak choi at the beginning of application. However, rice husk biochar alone provided the best results for pak choi as an indicator plant. Keywords: C-organic, nitrogen, phosphorus, soil fertility, Timor

Abstract

This study aims to test the size of biochar particles in capillary irrigation media and the height of planting holes in a vertical culture system on the growth and yield of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) in dry land using the Split Plot Design (RPT) factorial method with 3 replications. The first factor is the size of biochar particles consisting of three levels, namely: unsieved biochar, finely sieved biochar <0.5 mm, and the remainder of the sieve> 0.5 mm. The second factor is the height of the vertical culture consisting of three levels, namely: 25 cm, 75 cm, 125 cm from the ground surface. The results showed that the treatment of biochar particle size in capillary irrigation media that was able to increase lettuce growth and production was finely sieved biochar <0.5 mm, namely in the observation of plant height at the age of 14 MST, 21 MST, 28 MST and the root crown ratio. The treatment of planting hole height in the vertical culture system that is able to increase lettuce growth and production is the treatment of planting hole height of 25 cm which gives the best results for plant height at the age of 21 MST, 28 MST and root crown ratio.

Abstract

Planting corn is a local wisdom that is still practiced to maintain food availability in East Nusa Tenggara. In corn cultivation, the biggest challenge faced by farmers is the emergence of weeds around corn plants, which hinder their growth. Profiling the metabolites of weeds is an important initial step in studying the influence of allelochemical compounds that inhibit plant growth. This allows for appropriate weed control strategies. Chloris barbata is identified as a dominant weed in corn fields in East Nusa Tenggara. This study aims to profile the dominant weeds in corn fields in East Nusa Tenggara, specifically in Tua’tuka, Kupang Regency. The untargeted metabolit analysis of the three weed species revealed that Neophytadiene, accounting for 34.93% of Chloris barbata, is a compound strongly suspected to inhibit corn plant growth among the 36 compounds identified in the allelochemical study. The impact of allelochemicals from the other two weed species on corn growth needs further investigation due to limited information. Further studies are necessary to understand the effects of these allelochemicals on corn plant growth.

Abstract

Fulfillment of food can be done through the implementation of Sustainable Food Yards. KWT Sejati has difficulty providing food throughout the year. The yard owned is not productive because it has dry land biophysics with a dry climate. This condition is also a factor that influences people's food status (food insecurity). Management of dry land as agricultural land requires the adoption of technology. Verticulture technology can be used as an alternative to meet food needs in Karing. This activity aims to apply P2L to KWT Sejati through verticulture as a technology for cultivating vegetables on dry land. The method for implementing this activity is counseling and demonstration using a learning by doing system. The results of this activity provide many benefits to KWT Sejati, including: ease in managing dry land as agricultural land, being able to engineer planting media to improve soil quality, and producing higher production and income compared to using a raised bed system, and has the potential to overcome food insecurity conditions

Abstract

Many microbial populations are found in the rhizosphere, including in the soil layer that follows the plant root system. Rhizosphere soils contain more bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes than non-rhizosphere soils. One of the antibiotic producing bacteria has been isolated from the rhizosphere. The purpose of this study was to isolate and characterize the biochemistry of antibiotic producing bacteria and to evaluate their superiority in inhibiting other types of bacteria. Three microbial isolates were isolated from the rhizosphere of winged bean (K) and banana (P1 and P2) plants. All isolated isolates were tested for antagonism with E. coli, Bacillus, and Pseudomonas bacteria on Nutrient Agar (NA) media to determine antibiotic-producing bacteria. Furthermore, identification and characterization of colony morphology and a series of antagonism and pathogenicity tests were carried out. The three isolates had irregular colony forms (isolates K and P1) as well as oval shapes (isolate P2), flat surface, glossy texture, milky white or cream color, and irregular edges. The antagonism test showed that isolates P1, P2, and K could inhibit the growth of bacterial colonies E. coli, Bacillus, and Pseudomonas, respectively. In the pathogenicity test, the three microbial isolates did not show symptoms of necrosis in tobacco leaves after 2 days of observation.
