Abstract

Abstract: Vocabulary plays a crucial role in English language acquisition, serving as the foundation for developing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. This study investigates the effectiveness of the semantic mapping technique in improving vocabulary learning and retention among seventh-grade students at SMPN 2 Sakra Timur. This study employs a pre-experimental design, The study involves a single experimental group of 30 students who underwent pre-test, post-test, and delayed post-test assessments. Data were analyzed using Repeated Measures ANCOVA to find out significant differences across testing phases. The results indicate that the semantic mapping technique significantly improved students' vocabulary learning, as evidenced by a substantial increase in post-test scores compared to pre-test scores (p = 0.007, n = 0.235). However, the technique did not significantly improve students' retention, as evidenced by the non-significant interaction between time and pre-test scores (p = 0,137, n = 0.077). These findings suggest that while semantic mapping is effective in facilitating initial vocabulary learning, its impact on long-term retention remains limited.

Abstract

This study explores the development of English learning materials using Quizizz-based interactive design for tenth-grade students of Office Management and Business Services (OMBS) at SMKN 1 Mataram. Vocational high schools aim to equip students with both specialized skills and essential competencies, such as English, which is taught as a foreign language tailored to meet the specific needs of the OMBS curriculum. The integration of technology, particularly through the use of Quizizz, enhances the learning experience by promoting engagement and motivation among students. The study employs the ADDIE model (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate) for material development, ensuring alignment with student needs and curricular goals. Expert validation and student-teacher feedback reveal that the materials are highly effective, with students demonstrating increased motivation and improved learning outcomes. The interactive elements of Quizizz, including polls, open-ended questions, and various quiz formats, foster an engaging and interactive learning environment. The findings suggest that Quizizz-based learning materials can significantly enhance the learning process, making it more enjoyable and effective for vocational high school students. This research serves as a reference for future studies on material development and highlights the potential of Quizizz as a valuable tool for interactive education.

Abstract

Grammar is a common challenge in English writing, particularly among 10th-grade high school students, where conjunction errors in recount texts are prevalent. This study investigates the most frequent types of conjunction errors and the factors causing them. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through writing tests, content analysis, and interviews with students of SMAN 1 Gerung. The study identified 32 errors in students' recount texts: 78% in coordinating conjunctions, 22% in subordinating conjunctions, and no errors in correlative conjunctions. Common errors included unnecessary conjunctions, ambiguity, and inappropriate conjunctions for context, which disrupted sentence coherence. Interviews revealed that conjunction errors stemmed from students' lack of understanding, forgetfulness, and insufficient teaching at school. While some students knew the function of conjunctions, others lacked basic awareness or had not been adequately instructed, particularly within the school curriculum. The findings highlight the importance of targeted teaching strategies, practice, and feedback to improve students' conjunction usage. This study underscores the need for explicit instruction and regular training in conjunctions to enhance recount texts' clarity and organization. Teachers should provide detailed explanations and constructive feedback, while students are encouraged to engage in self-editing and structured exercises. The results offer valuable insights for educators and learners to address conjunction errors and improve writing proficiency in English.

Abstract

The Sasak language spoken by the Sasak ethnic group in Lombok, Indonesia is one of the many Austronesian languages. As a descendant of Proto-Austronesian (PAN), Sasak is assumed to retain traces of its Austronesian heritage. This research explains the phonological characteristics of PAN in Sasak language by using the working principle in historical linguistic studies. Etymon data from Proto-Austronesian were gathered through literature review, while 200 basic vocabulary and 500 culturally vocabulary were collected through interviews. The interviews involved native speakers of four distinct Sasak dialects, with each dialect represented by three carefully selected informants based on predefined linguistic criteria. Employing a comparative method with a top-down approach, the study identified 343 PAN etyma in Sasak, of which 190 (55.39%) were determined to be inherited lexicons. Among these inherited items, 25 retained their original forms, while the remaining underwent phonological innovations. The other 153 etyma (44.61%) showed no evidence of direct inheritance. Retained Austronesian phonemes include *p, *t, *d, *m, *n, *ɲ, *s, *l, and *r —9 out of the 28 PAN phonemes—where most were regularly retained except for *r and *ɲ, which showed irregularities. Innovations were observed in *C, *c, *z, *j, *N, *S, *h, *R, *ay, *aw, and *uy. Additionally, certain phonemes, such as *k, *?, *w, *g, *ŋ, *y, *i, *u, *Ə, and *a, exhibited both retention and innovation. The retention and innovation in Sasak followed four distinct types: (1) regular retention and regular innovation; (2) regular retention and irregular innovation; (3) irregular retention and regular innovation; (4) irregular retention and irregular innovation. The high degree of innovation and non-inherited lexicon indicate that Sasak has been separated from its Austronesian ancestors for a long time. This study plays a crucial role in classifying languages within Indonesia, identifying the center of Sasak ethnic distribution on Lombok Island, and exploring the etymology of the Sasak language.

Abstract

Basic Mandarin Training for Tourism for Lombok Tourism Polytechnic students was held on Tuesday, May 6, 2025. This community service program, organized by University of Mataram's Language Academic Support Unit, aimed to introduce Mandarin to students. Participants were students who would be undertaking internships in the hotel industry in Taiwan. The training consisted of two stages: program socialization and the training sessions themselves. The material provided covered Mandarin phonetic basics, Hanzi character writing, and simulation-based conversation practice. Participants learned through role-playing activities in tourism scenarios, such as hotel room bookings and restaurant services. Despite the program's limited duration, participants showed high enthusiasm and actively participated. They were also introduced to using the Pleco application as a tool to support independent learning. Evaluation results indicated that this program was quite effective in providing a basic understanding of Mandarin for Lombok Tourism Polytechnic students, though independent practice in pronunciation is highly needed. Therefore, after the training, participants were advised to integrate applications and AI to support their self-study efforts. With improved Mandarin skills, students are expected to compete in the global tourism industry and provide higher-quality services to Chinese tourists.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and describe the strategies used by the English teacher in teaching vocabulary to eighth-grade students at SMP Dwijendra Mataram in the 2024/2025 academic year. The school was selected as the research site because the researcher had direct teaching and observational experience during a four-month Kampus Mengajar program at the school. During the program, several challenges were observed in vocabulary learning, including students' low interest in reading, difficulties in memorizing words, and diverse student backgrounds. A qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach was used. Data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with the English teacher. The results showed that the teacher implemented three main strategies: formal practice (structured activities such as repetition and drilling), functional practice (context-based learning related to daily life), and memorization strategies (using visual media such as videos). These strategies were proven to improve students’ vocabulary mastery while also increasing their motivation and engagement in learning English.
