Abstract

Background: Adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) continues to pose a significant challenge for people living with HIV (PLWH). Non-adherence to ART can have far-reaching implications for patient well-being, particularly in increasing the risk of opportunistic infections when medication is not taken as prescribed. Objective: This study aimed to develop a theoretical model that explains how PLWH in Indonesia adhere to their ART regimen and the strategies they follow to maintain adherence. Methods: The study used a grounded theory approach. Data were collected through face-to-face in-depth interviews with 21 PLWH who had been taking ART for six months or more at a non-governmental organization (NGO) in Jakarta, Indonesia, between July 2019 and November 2019. Theoretical sampling was used, and the data analysis method of Corbin and Strauss was utilized, including open coding, axis coding, and selective coding. Results: Three stages were identified as a process of adherence to the ART regimen: 1) initiating ART, 2) missing the connection, and 3) taking control. Self-awareness was identified as the central core theme describing the ART adherence process. Conclusion: Having adequate self-awareness to take ART regularly is crucial to improving adherence to ART. Moreover, social support from one’s spouse and family members can help patients maintain adherence. Therefore, self-awareness and support systems should be included as components in nursing interventions when starting ART therapy. In addition, nurses can help identify potential support persons and provide information related to ART therapy.

Abstract

Preparedness for menarche can be achieved by providing information and attention to young women when facing menarche so that they will be calmer and ready to welcome the arrival of menarche. The initial survey, conducted by the researchers using an interview method involving four elementary school students who had experienced menarche, revealed that they experienced panic and embarrassment when facing menarche. They did not obtain information on menarche from their parents (mothers). Several findings have shown that their readiness to face menarche is still low. Mothers' awkwardness in providing information directly to young women can be overcome by using media in the form of e-mobiles or the internet. A pre-experiment using a single-group pretest-posttest methodology without a control group is the type of study design that will be used. The study variable was teenage girls' knowledge of reproductive health in preparation for menarche. A t-test was used for data analysis. The study was conducted between March and December 2023. SD Negeri 07 Pagi in the Ciracas District of East Jakarta served as the research site. The study population consisted of female pupils in classes 3, 4, 5, and 6 who had not yet reached menarche. Adolescent reproductive health, young women's preparation for menarche, and views on the usage of menarche information were the topics covered in the questionnaire. The initial readiness variable (pre-test) of young women and the results of the readiness (post-test) of young women after obtaining reproductive health information using the women's menarche information application obtained a Sig. (2-tailed) of 0.000 < α (0.05), as did the Paired T-test of the initial understanding variable (pre-test) of teenage girls with the variable of understanding results (post-test) of teenage girls. Young women's pre- and post-test understandings and readiness differed significantly from one another. They also differed significantly from one another in terms of their initial readiness and subsequent readiness following the use of the menarche information application to obtain reproductive health information.

Abstract

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is a common condition among menstruating women, often influenced by factors such as sleep quality and stress levels. Final-year female students are particularly vulnerable to sleep disturbances and academic stress. This study analyzes the relationship between sleep quality and academic stress with PMS among final-year nursing students at UPN “Veteran” Jakarta. A Cross-Sectional design was used, and data was collected in November 2024. The study involved 188 final-year students: Bachelor of Nursing (79 respondents), Diploma in Nursing (45 respondents), and Professional Nurse Education Program (64 respondents), selected through Stratified Convenience Sampling. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Student-Life Stress Inventory (SLSI), and Shortened Premenstrual Assessment Form (SPAF) were used to measure sleep quality, academic stress, and PMS. Data were collected via online questionnaires and analyzed using the chi-square test. Results revealed a significant relationship between sleep quality (p = 0.000; OR = 5,989) and academic stress (p = 0.000; OR = 28,761) with PMS. Students with poor sleep quality had a 6-fold higher risk of severe PMS, while those with high academic stress had a 29-fold higher risk. This study emphasizes the importance of maintaining healthy lifestyles, such as improving time management to enhance sleep quality and adopting coping strategies to reduce academic stress, thereby minimizing PMS complaints

Abstract

Addressing the prevalence of anemia in female adolescents requires the active engagement of multiple sectors. The COVID-19 pandemic has hampered the school-based weekly iron folate supplementation (WIFAS) program which may lead to an increased anemia prevalence in female adolescents. The role of community-based organizations in assisting preexisting programs is supposed to alleviate the prevalence effectively. This study aimed to analyze the role of a community-based organization (CBO) consisting of youth organizations and integrated services post cadres in a program to improve hemoglobin level in Sirnagalih Village, Bogor, West Java, Indonesia. This pre-experimental study involved 89 female adolescents. After the intervention conducted by the CBO, significant differences were identified in the level of knowledge, attitudes, and hemoglobin (Hb) levels of female adolescents (p<0.05). The linear regression test obtained a statistical model equation related to female adolescents' Hb levels after being assisted by the CBO (R = 0.821, p = 0.000). The variable role of CBO, understanding media information, initial Hb level, adherence to consuming WIFAS, and habits to consume iron enhancer food of female adolescents can explain the Hb levels as much as 82%.

Abstract

Adolescents are a group at risk of HIV exposure. At this age, adolescents have a high curiosity, so if it is not followed by an attitude that cares about HIV prevention efforts, then the attitude will lead adolescents to behave at risk of HIV, such as premarital sex and injecting drug use. One preventive method that can be taken is to provide education through audio-visual media. This media can help improve learning outcomes and motivation. This study aims to analyze the impact of health education about HIV through audio-visual media on HIV prevention behavior among adolescents in a high school in Tangerang Regency. The study method was quantitative with a quasi-experimental design using one group pre-post design. Instrument of the study was Sexual Behavioral Abstinence and Avoidance of High-Risk Situation Questionnaire (SBAHAQ). Respondents were selected using purposive sampling. The respondents watched audio-visual media (6:50 minutes) about HIV prevention. The pre-test was conducted before the intervention and the post-test was conducted 21 days after the intervention. The total number of respondents was 59 and age ranged between 15 and 18 years. The average score of HIV prevention behavior increased from 11.03 to 13.27 after the intervention with p value 0,001. Health education delivered through audio-visual media about HIV prevention can improve prevention behavior among adolescents in a high school in Tangerang Regency. Audio-visual media can be used in school learning, to make it easier for adolescents to understand HIV prevention behavior and an audio-visual media can be used to increase adolescent behavior in prevention HIV.

Abstract

A common complaint often experienced by adolescent girls during menstruation is menstrual pain or dysmenorrhea. Menstrual pain is caused by an imbalance of hormones such as prostaglandins and progesterone due to uterine contractions that affect each individual. Many activities of adolescent girls are disrupted by this menstrual pain, including female students at the Pesantren Yatim Cahaya Mandiri, South Tangerang, Banten. The objective of this community service is to address menstrual pain in adolescents through several methods including: 1) providing education on nonpharmacological therapy to reduce menstrual pain, addressing the lack of information, knowledge, and understanding related to menstruation; 2) training in life skills to adapt to menstrual disturbances, aimed at overcoming the low level of life skills in dealing with menstrual issues; 3) implementing 16-hour Intermittent Fasting (16:8) and doing murojaah (to maintain the memorization of the Quran good, fluent, and correct) using the "Guide Me" app for menstrual pain in adolescent girls; 4) supervising and reevaluating programs to address menstrual disturbances using the "Guide Me" app; 5) adopting positive lifestyle changes to reduce menstrual disturbances (efforts to reduce menstrual pain). Adolescents are able to remain productive during menstruation, implement Intermittent Fasting (16:8), and stay healthier and more productive even while menstruating. The results of this intervention have proven effective in reducing menstrual pain through non-pharmacological therapy, leading to healthier and more sustainable productivity for adolescent girls. Those who initially experienced severe pain (scale 6), causing distress and lower abdominal cramps during menstruation that often reduced their quality of life—along with discomfort affecting their physical and mental well-being, often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, breast pain, rectal swelling, and diarrhea—reported a reduction in menstrual pain to a scale of 3 after this intervention.
