Abstract

Abstract

Introduction: In the human body, microplastics are considered toxic agents. Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) has very high chemical resistance, making it very difficult to be degraded by microorganisms. LDPE plastic would be degraded to a smaller size and could not be completely degraded by microorganisms. Plastic packaging made from LDPE is the most commonly found plastic waste. Microplastics may cause cell injury, especially cells in the liver, the primary organ for detoxification. Microplastic induces reactive oxygen species, which leads to oxidative stress. Prolonged exposure to microplastics leads cells unable to cope with the toxic effects. Furthermore, this process triggers fatty degeneration and necrosis. This study aims to explain the correlation between microplastic oral intake with fatty degeneration and necrosis of hepatocytes in animal models. Methods: Forty-two Wistar rats were involved and assigned to one control and five experimental groups. The experimental groups were given microplastic exposure starting from 0.0375 mg/day to 0.6 mg daily for 90 days. Results: Fatty degeneration and necrosis were observed using a light microscope with hematoxylin-eosin staining. There was a significant correlation between microplastic oral intake and hepatocyte necrosis (p<0.05). The higher the exposure dose, the more hepatocyte necrosis. In contrast, there was no correlation between microplastic exposure and fatty degeneration. Ingestion of microplastics leads to hepatocyte necrosis. Conclusion: Oral intake of LDPE microplastics with <20 µm in size for 90 days in Wistar rats leads to hepatocellular injury. Based on histopathological images, hepatocyte necrosis was more prominent than hepatocyte fatty degeneration.

Abstract

Introduction: Microplastic bioaccumulation in nephron tissue can cause high levels of nephron mitochondrial reactive oxygen species, endoplasmic related stress proteins and inflammation-related proteins.Material and methods: This study observed damage to the tubular and glomerular structures of experimental animals due to oral intake of microplastics. 46 Wistar rats used were divided into one control(C)  and five experimental groups (Xn). The experimental group was exposed to low-density polyethylene microplastic doses of 0.0375 mg, 0.075 mg, 0.15 mg, 0.3 mg and 0.6 mg daily for 90 days with the probe, respectively. Damage to the tubular and glomerular structures was observed through microscopic examination of the preparations stained with hematoxylin eosin. Results: The results of One-Way ANOVA test showed a significant difference between groups with tubular damage (p <0.05). Meanwhile, the results of Kruskal Wallis test showed a significant difference between groups with glomerular damage (p <0.05).Conclusion: Multiple comparation indicated that exposure to microplastic started at 0.0375 mg daily had led to damage to the tubular and glomerular. Ingestion of microplastic particles causes renal tubular and glomerular damage in Wistar rats.

Abstract

Background: In Indonesia, the first COVID-19 cases were announced on March 2, 2020. The first two cases were found in Jakarta, and the number continues to grow over time. Stunting is a condition in which children experience growth disorders so that the child's height does not match their age. The COVID-19 pandemic increases the risk of acute nutritional problems (undernutrition and malnutrition) in vulnerable groups. Even chronic nutrition problems (Stunting) can increase if the COVID-19 lockdown is set for long. However, data from the SSGI in 2019, 2020, and 2021 show a decline in the prevalence of Stunting from year to year. Purpose: This study was conducted to determine a difference in child Stunting prevalence before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Gending District. Methods: This research is an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional study. The population in this study was a child with an age range of 2-5 years before and during the COVID-19 pandemic at the Gending Public Health Center. Results: From 317 total samples, 50 stunted children were found in the period before the pandemic and 25 stunted children during a pandemic. The prevalence of child Stunting before and during the COVID-19 pandemic decreased by 28% to 16.1%. Based on the Pearson Chi-Square Test analysis test, the prevalence of Stunting was significantly (p= 0.031) different before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusion: There are differences in child Stunting prevalence before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Keywords: Pandemic, COVID-19, Stunting.

Abstract

Background: The widespread use of plastic and poor management of plastic waste is an environmental problem and has an impact on human health. The most commonly found microplastic contaminant is polyethylene polymer. Ingested microplastic particles will undergo an endocytosis mechanism and be absorbed into the bloodstream. This then triggers an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) which induces oxidative stress and results in an inflammatory response. This study tries to analyze the effect of administering microplastics on increasing blood serum C-reactive protein as a biomarker and marker of the inflammatory response due to microplastics. Method: The experimental analytical research used 42 Rattus Norvegicus Wistar Strain animals, which were divided into 5 experimental groups and 1 control group. Quantitative data measurements/collection were carried out at two times (pre-post-test control group design) and analyzed by non-parametric comparison using the Friedman Test to see the increase in C-Reactive Protein (CRP) levels in the blood serum of Rattus norvegicus Wistar Strain before and after being given intake polyethylene microplastics. Result: In all groups X0-X5, The results of the comparative test using the Friedman test showed a significant value of P = 0.000 (P < 0.05), so it can be concluded that there is a difference in pre and post experimental CRP levels. Discussion: The increase in serum CRP levels from the control group to the X5 treatment group may be due to oxidative stress mechanisms, especially in hepatocyte cells, smooth muscle cells, macrophage cells, endothelial cells, lymphocyte cells and adipocyte cells which induce the production of CRP protein, especially native C-reactive protein (nCRP) and monomeric C-reactive protein (mCRP). The difference in serum CRP levels was significant (P = 0.000), where there was an increase in serum CRP levels post treatment (post experimental) from the lowest mean of 0.05 mg/L (pre experimental) to the highest of 0.98 mg/L on average, indicating that administration of microplastic intake at the dose studied had an impact on increasing serum CRP levels in response to an inflammatory reaction. The limitation of this research is that there are no journals that examine microplastics on serum CRP levels, resulting in a lack of research that can be used as a reference or comparative theory. Conclusion: Administration of Microplastic Polyethylene at the dose studied in the treatment group caused a significant increase in Rattus Norvegicus Wistar Strain Serum CRP levels.

Abstract

Microplastics (plastic particles <5 millimeters in diameter) have become a novel food contaminant for humans.Microplastics was estimated that children consume 106-113 microplastics per day and 126-142 particles in adults. The main prevention effort is to identify the presence of plastic particles in food, one of which is sugar. Microplasticsthat are in the digestive tract can enter the bloodstream and distributed to other parts of the body. These particlescannot be destroyed by the body's cellular mechanisms, thus triggering inflammation, genotoxicity, hypersensitivity, oxidative stress, and cell death. The aim of the study was to measure the number of particles, shape and diameter ofplastic particles as contaminants in refined sugar produced in Indonesia. Quantitative descriptive research using 16sugar brands that are produced, known and widely consumed in Indonesia. The research was carried out at theClinical Pathology Laboratory, Widya Mandala Surabaya Catholic University. Quantification of the number, shapeand diameter of plastic particles using a microscope. The examination results showed that all sugar samples containedplastic particles between 5-100 MPs/50 gram of sugar, most of the contaminants were in the form of pellets, and thelargest particle diameter was 367µm.
