Abstract

The interplay between culture and language is a central theme in anthropological linguistics. Culture encompasses values, beliefs, norms, and traditions passed down through generations, and language plays a fundamental role in expressing and preserving these cultural elements. This paper explores the reciprocal relationship between language and culture, illustrating how language not only reflects but also shapes the social and cultural realities of a community. By examining various examples, such as the use of honorifics in Japanese culture and the transmission of oral traditions in indigenous communities, the study highlights the role of language as a medium for cultural continuity. Additionally, it delves into how cultural changes, such as technological advancements, lead to the evolution of language, especially in the development of new vocabulary. Through this analysis, the paper aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how language and culture mutually influence each other, facilitating the ongoing process of cultural preservation and transformation.

This study explores strategies, challenges, and factors influencing language and cultural preservation among migrant communities in Denpasar using a qualitative case study approach. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and archival documentation, and analyzed through reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that preservation efforts include the use of regional languages within families, community-based cultural activities, and digital platforms such as social media. Key challenges involve globalization, pressure from Balinese cultural assimilation, and social stigma discouraging younger generations from practicing regional languages. Nevertheless, community initiatives, technological engagement, and supportive local government policies promoting cultural diversity serve as significant enablers. Overall, sustaining regional languages and cultures in Denpasar’s multicultural setting is crucial for safeguarding the identity and cultural heritage of migrant communities. egional languages. However, community support, technological engagement, and local government policies promoting cultural diversity have been key enablers of successful preservation efforts. Thus, sustaining regional languages and cultures in Denpasar’s multicultural context is essential to safeguarding the identity and cultural heritage of migrant communities.

Abstract

This study examines the linguistic landscape in the Sanur tourist area, Bali, as a representation of social, cultural, and ideological dynamics in the context of tourism globalization. Sanur as a multilingual public space displays the diversity of language use on signs, banners, billboards, and shop facades that reflect the interaction between local and global languages. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, an analysis was conducted on visual documentation and the social context of text use in public spaces, and linked to regional language preservation policies, especially Bali Provincial Regulation Number 1 of 2018. The results of the study show the dominance of English as a symbol of global economic power and the main communication tool in the tourism sector, while Balinese is used more symbolically as a local cultural identity. Ideologically, the Sanur linguistic landscape shows the negotiation between cultural preservation and the commodification of local identity amidst global market pressures. This study emphasizes that public space is not just an arena for communication, but also a field of representation of power, resistance, and cultural capital.

Abstract

The declining number of arrival of foreign tourists to the island of Bali has led to some intense competition in obtaining customers in restaurants, located in the area of Ubud Gianyar. To anticipate such things, foreign language skill, especially English is very important, especially for waiters in restaurants, who are required to be able to explain the food/menu in English, so the customers will feel satisfied because they understand the food ordered. This study aims to describe the equivalence of Indonesian phrases in English about food on the food lists in several restaurants in Ubud. The data were analyzed using qualitative linguistic theory, which relies on a phenomenological philosophical approach. The results showed that all restaurants used Modificative Noun phrases, and 80% of them also used Appositive noun phrases.  While Coordinative Noun phrases are only used by 10% of restaurants. Furthermore, it is suggested to the restaurant managers to use simpler noun phrases, so that it becomes easier for guests to understand the meaning of Indonesian phrases that are stated in English noun phrases. In addition, it will also make it easier for waiters to explain the food menu available at the restaurant.   Keywords: noun phrase, renu, Restaurant

Abstract

How to communicate properly and correctly is needed by the people of Bali, especially those who live in tourism areas. The increasing arrivals of foreign tourists to the Island of the Gods has made English an important means of communication, which is therefore, badly needed by people in tourist areas, such as the Kintamani. Those who are directly involved in tourism industry activities are expected to provide good service to meet customer satisfaction. This qualitative research, which is based on a phenomenological philosophy approach, aims to determine the understanding of employees and homestay owners in Kintamani on the use of formal English greetings and terms to address customers in their daily tasks. 30 respondents were selected as samples by accidental sampling technique. Meanwhile, data were collected from respondents through interviews and observations, with recording techniques when respondents served guests in eight representative homestays. Furthermore, the data were descriptively analyzed, referring to the basic English grammatical theory. The results of the study show that in general, employees or homestay owners in Kintamani have already understood the formal use of greetings and terms to address the guests in English well. But in daily conversation, they do not use greetings and terms to address guests in formal English which is theoretically appropriate, and prioritize the communicative aspect instead.
