Abstract

Abstract. Foreign language learning in vocational tourism institutions, such as the Bali Tourism Polytechnic, still faces challenges in developing students’ communicative competence that is both contextual and functional. This study aims to describe the fundamental principles of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and to design an SFL-based German language learning model tailored to the professional communication needs of the tourism sector. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the research was conducted through three main stages: a literature review, content analysis of authentic German tourism texts (e.g., hotel reservation dialogues, brochures, service emails, and spoken interactions), and the design of a learning model. The research instrument consisted of an SFL-based analytical grid covering ideational, interpersonal, and textual metafunctions to identify how language is used in professional tourism contexts. The findings demonstrate that integrating SFL into learning enables students to produce oral and written texts that are more contextual, communicative, and professionally appropriate, such as handling hotel reservations, providing travel information, and responding to customer complaints. The novelty of this study lies in applying SFL to German language learning within vocational tourism education, a field that has received little attention compared to English. Its broader implication is that an SFL-based learning model can serve as a framework for developing foreign language curricula in vocational education that are more practical, adaptive, and aligned with the demands of the global tourism industry. Keywords: German, Systemic-Functional Linguistics, vocational learning, tourism, text genres

Abstract

Canggu is one of the areas that has experienced rapid development in the tourism sector. Canggu Village has become a leading tourist destination in Badung Regency, alongside Kuta and Nusa Dua. The development of tourism in Canggu Village has shown significant changes that affect socio-cultural conditions as well as the environment. This study aims to identify the positive and negative impacts of tourism development on the socio-cultural conditions of the local community and on environmental conditions in Canggu Village. This research employs a quantitative approach with descriptive analysis. The sampling technique used was proportional sampling and purposive sampling, involving 100 respondents. Data were collected through a survey using questionnaires, supported by interviews to strengthen the data, as well as documentation. The results indicate that the most significant positive socio-cultural impact perceived by the community is the emergence of a sense of pride in local products and cultural arts that are appreciated by tourists. Meanwhile, the most significant positive environmental impact is the implementation of waste management activities resulting from tourism development in Canggu Village. On the other hand, the community also perceives negative impacts, including the modification of local arts to attract increasing tourist visits, as well as environmental impacts, particularly traffic congestion.

Abstract

The natural potential, strategic location and easy accessibility have made Sanur one of the most visited marine tourism areas. However, the development of marine tourism, in spite of having a positive impact, it also has negative ones, as it apparently harms the environment. This study aims to identify the extent to which ecotourism principles are applied in marine tourism product development efforts and programs in Sanur. This research is a descriptive qualitative research with the determination of informants through purposive sampling and snowball sampling techniques. Triangulation was also carried out as a test of data validity in this study. The results showed that overall the business and product development program of marine tourism in Sanur have implemented 5 principles of ecotourism according to Dowling. 3 principles that have been implemented well are Utilizing natural resources, Providing benefits to the community and Visitor satisfaction. However, the other 2 principles of ecotourism, namely nature-based and environmental education, still need to be improved in their application, in order to preserve nature which will ultimately establish sustainable tourism.
