Abstract

Research on Linguistic Landscape (LL) has been done quite often in recent years. The studies are still focused on examining signs in one particular area. In this regard, this study aimed to examine the public signs found in the tourism area of Objek Wisata Candidasa (Candidasa Tourism Objects), Bugbug Village, Karangasem. This place was chosen since Objek Wisata Candidasa (OWC) is one of the tourism destinations in Bali most at risk of globalization. The current globalization affects the use of language on public signs around OWC. Furthermore, this study examines the language variation on public signs and the formers' motives in producing such language(s). The data in this research were the photograph of visible public signs in OWC supported by written and spoken information. For this research to be successful, this study applied the LL "one single sign" method of data collection. Based on the results, it was found that English dominates the language used on the public signs in OWC as a monolingual sign, with a rate of 45.05%. Moreover, it was found the varied motives of the formers in using the public signs; namely, (1) economic purpose (attracting consumers' attention), (2) providing information, (3) symbol of identity (of ownership) & language conservation, (4) decorative function (creates a natural/ artistic impression), and (5) shows diversity in OWC. In other words, the impact of globalization has led to the emergence of many public signs written in foreign languages, especially English.

Abstract

Taboo expressions are part of a language that is produced by culture. Every language in an area certainly has taboo expressions, including Denpasar City. Denpasar City is an industrial center that attracts everyone from various regions to settle and survive. With the phenomenon of immigrants with various backgrounds, there is an intensity of multi-language. On the other hand, technological advances slowly change language norms, especially the use of taboo words. This study aims to examine taboo words and analyze the context of an utterance that becomes taboo. This study uses a qualitative approach. Data was obtained through field studies and literature. This study also employs the theory of ethnographic and anthropological linguistics approaches. The results show that taboo expressions in Denpasar are divided into four categories: language level of taboo, naming taboo, context-specific taboo words, and general taboo words. In addition to the context, an utterance that becomes taboo is not only influenced by the word but is the result of a combination of performance and participants in the process of its expression. Thus, an utterance becomes taboo or inseparable from several elements, namely what utterance is used, how the utterance is used, where the utterance is used, who is involved, and what is meant by the said utterance.

Abstract

The role of the host is directly tied to communication. The host needs to be able to get the information they need while still being polite. The purpose of this study is to determine how the tact maxim is applied and formulated as a politeness strategy. Note-taking and non-participant observation techniques were used to gather the data for this study, which can be found on the official Kick Andy YouTube channel and website. This study made application of Leech's (2014) politeness theory, which talks about tact maxims. According to the study's findings, the host of the 2019 Kick Andy talk show applied the tact maxim, one of the neg-politeness maxims, to lessen the amount of pressure placed on the guest. Declarative and interrogative structured utterances, interrogative utterance, subtle imperative, and conditional relationship clause are all used to realize the tact maxim. It can be concluded that the host can obtain sufficient information while remaining polite by implementing the tact maxim, which is a form of politeness. As a result, the interview goes well, and the host's questions don't burden the guest.

Some examples of words were found in "Satua Bali Tales From Bali". The words were classified into words with prefixes, infix, suffixes and confix. In the data found that there were affixes found in the beginning of the word basic (prefix), inserts on the word (infix), suffix on the word base (suffix) or prefix and suffix that appeared together in the word base (confix). In the data also found the word that experienced nasalization process. In the prefix analysis found the fair form, potential and unnatural forms. In the infix analysis only found the fair form. In the suffix analysis found an unusual inverse form in the data. Unusual (strange) inverse forms can cause problems, because in society, those forms are not commonly used. In the confix analysis there was a reasonable invention. There was also a word that experienced a process of nasalization. For example the form of nepukin "see".

Abstract

This study focuses on the language functions used and the frequency of occurrence of language functions in the teaching of tourism police at Bali Police State School. The language used is classified into several functions. According to Leech (1993), language functions are classified into five functions, namely: informative, expressive, directive, aesthetic, and fatigue functions. Meanwhile, according to Blundell (1978) expressions can be 'greetings', 'introductions', 'ask questions', and so on. However, based on the tour police conversation, the theory must be presented based on the procedures applied during the tourism police conversation, so that it can be applied in practice. This study applied lecture, pair work and conversation methods. As a result teaching, ESP to tourism police candidates needs to be given, considering the tourism police candidates will face directly with foreign tourists in the field. The introduction to ESP is still seldom to be given. Thus, it is considered necessary to be given a more frequent introduction by providing initial training to the tourism police candidates. This is expected to help tourism police candidates who initially only get general English lessons can develop with ESP material specifically for tourism police candidates.
