Influenced by factors such as tongue position, lip rounding, and phonetic context, vowel variation remains underexplored in the context of second language learning. To analyze The objective of this research was to illustrate that the inclusion of homophone game could improve the pronunciation skills of seventh grade students at SMPN 16 PALU. the researcher employed a quasi-experimental approach, assigning 31 students to the experimental group and 34 students to the control group. The sample was selected by using cluster random sampling technique. Data collection involved pre-test and post-test, an analyzed was conducted using paired sample t-tests with the assistance of SPSS version 27 windows. The findings indicate that employing the homophone game strategy effectively improved the pronunciation ability of the seventh-grade students at SMPN 16 PALU. this was evidenced by the paired sample t-test analysis, revealing a significance level (2-tailed) of 0.001 < 0.05, indicating a significant difference in students’ learning outcomes between the pretest and posttest phases. This discovery suggests that to improve pronunciation instruction, educators should integrate homophone games into their teaching approaches. Keywords: Improve, Pronunciation, Homophone Game

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of the Snowball Throwing technique in improving the speaking skills of junior high school students. Speaking is considered a crucial aspect of English language learning, requiring students to communicate ideas clearly and confidently. Traditional methods often fail to stimulate active participation, prompting the need for more engaging approaches. The Snowball Throwing technique offers an interactive alternative that involves students writing questions on pieces of paper, crumpling them into balls, and throwing them to classmates who answer them verbally. This activity fosters spontaneous speech, peer interaction, and critical thinking. A quasi-experimental design was used with two classes: an experimental group taught using the Snowball Throwing technique and a control group taught using conventional methods. Before the treatment, the average score of the experimental group was 62.4 and the control group was 62.2. After the application of Snowball Throwing Technique, the experimental group’s post-test score increased to 82.6, while the control group only reached 68.5. The Mann-Whitney U test results showed a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), which means there is a significant difference between the two groups. This technique proved to be effective in improving speaking skills, especially in the aspects of fluency, accuracy, and comprehensibility. In addition, this technique also increased students’ confidence and active participation, in line with Vygotsky’s theory that social interaction in cooperative learning accelerates language acquisition.

Abstract

This study examines the teaching strategies employed by English teachers at SMK Negeri 1 Labuan and SMK Negeri 3 Palu to enhance students’ speaking skills, addressing persistent challenges such as anxiety, low confidence, and limited vocabulary. The research aims to identify the strategies used, analyze their classroom implementation, and determine the most dominant approaches. Using a qualitative descriptive design, data were gathered from five English teachers through interviews, classroom observations, questionnaires, and documentation, and analyzed according to Oxford’s taxonomy of language learning strategies: memory, cognitive, compensation, metacognitive, affective, and social. The findings indicate that all six categories were applied to varying extents, with social and cognitive strategies most frequently and consistently used, followed by metacognitive and compensation strategies. Memory and affective strategies were employed less often but still contributed meaningfully to instruction. Teachers adapted these strategies to align with students’ needs, classroom contexts, and communicative objectives. The study concludes that strategy-based instruction, particularly through social interaction and emotional support significantly improves students’ speaking fluency, confidence, and participation. It underscores the importance of combining communicative practice with psychosocial readiness in vocational EFL settings, recommending continuous teacher training, curriculum alignment to foster learner autonomy, and further research incorporating student perspectives and mixed-method approaches.

Abstract

This research aimed to identify and describe the psychological factors affecting the speaking performance of third-semester students of the English Education Study Program at Tadulako University. The study employed a quantitative descriptive design using a survey method with 100 randomly selected respondents. The instruments used were adapted from standardized scales: the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale, the Speaking Self-Efficacy Scale, and the Attitude/Motivation Test Battery. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics through SPSS version 25, focusing on frequencies, percentages, and mean scores. The results revealed that students experienced a high level of anxiety (M = 3.13) and low self-confidence (M = 2.03), both of which served as psychological barriers in speaking English. Conversely, students demonstrated high motivation (M = 3.53) and positive attitudes (M = 3.59) toward English-speaking activities, which acted as psychological strengths enhancing engagement and persistence in learning. Overall, these findings suggest that emotional and motivational factors significantly influence students’ speaking performance. Therefore, it is recommended that lecturers foster a supportive learning environment that reduces anxiety, enhances confidence, and maintains students’ motivation and positive attitudes toward English learning.
