Abstract

Dental caries remains one of the most prevalent oral health problems among preschool children, and inadequate parental knowledge is often identified as a major contributing factor. Despite existing preventive programs, many parents still lack sufficient understanding of proper oral hygiene practices, which may exacerbate caries risk during early childhood. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between parental knowledge of oral health and the incidence of dental caries among preschool children enrolled at PAUD and Kindergarten under the Ar-Rahman Foundation in Jombang. A quantitative, cross-sectional design was employed involving 39 parents selected through total sampling. Parental knowledge was assessed using a structured questionnaire, while children’s dental caries status was measured using the deft index following WHO guidelines. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test with a significance level of α = 0.05. The results showed that more than half of the parents (51.3%) possessed low knowledge regarding oral health, while the prevalence of dental caries among preschool children remained high. Although descriptive patterns suggested that children of parents with lower knowledge tended to exhibit higher deft scores, statistical results (p = 0.286) indicated no significant association between parental knowledge and dental caries incidence. These findings highlight that knowledge alone may not sufficiently influence caries outcomes without being accompanied by consistent practice, behavioral reinforcement, and adequate access to oral health services. In conclusion, the high prevalence of dental caries observed in this study underscores the need for improved parental education and comprehensive health promotion strategies. Strengthening school-based oral health programs and enhancing parental involvement in preventive practices are essential to reducing the burden of caries among preschool-aged children.

Abstract

Oral and dental hygiene remains a significant public health concern among adolescents, largely due to inadequate knowledge and limited exposure to effective health education. Preliminary findings at SMAN 1 Porong indicated that 50% of students exhibited poor plaque indices, reflecting insufficient awareness of proper oral hygiene practices. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of TikTok-based educational media in improving students’ knowledge of oral and dental hygiene. A quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach was employed. A total of 52 tenth-grade students were selected using simple random sampling. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire distributed via Google Forms before and after the intervention. The educational intervention consisted of delivering oral health content through TikTok media. Data analysis was conducted using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test to assess differences in knowledge scores before and after the intervention. The results demonstrated a substantial improvement in students’ knowledge following the intervention. Prior to education, 96% of respondents were categorized as having low knowledge, whereas after the intervention, 88% achieved a good knowledge level. Statistical analysis revealed a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores (p = 0.000; p < 0.05), indicating the effectiveness of TikTok as an educational medium. In conclusion, TikTok-based health education significantly enhances adolescents’ knowledge of oral and dental hygiene. The findings suggest that integrating social media platforms into health promotion strategies can serve as an innovative and engaging approach to improve health literacy among students. Future research is recommended to explore the long-term impact of such interventions and to compare the effectiveness of different digital media platforms.

Abstract

Pregnancy is still lacking in oral and dental health, one of which is the problem of gingivitis. In Indonesia, 74% of pregnant women experience gingivitis, according to Riskesdas 2018. At the Bulak Banteng Health Center, Surabaya, the purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between gingivitis and pregnant women's awareness of the condition. Research methods: This study is analytical and cross-sectional. The target of the study was pregnant women. A total of thirty pregnant women. Information questionnaires and gingival index were distributed as part of the data collection process. Spearman's rho is a data analysis method used. As per the findings, pregnant women's gingival index fell under the moderate range, and their knowledge on gingivitis fell into the poor group. There was no correlation between pregnant women's knowledge of gingivitis and their gingivitis, according to the study's findings. Conclusion: According to the analysis's findings, there was no correlation between pregnant women's knowledge of gingivitis and the condition during 2025 at the Bulak Banteng Health Center Dental Clinic in Surabaya.
